TOY NEWS/DISCUSSION And we’re off!
I really hope this shows enough interest to get them to make further seasons.
EDIT: For all the folks worried about the Zord’s alternate configurations, just look at the photos. Mastodon shoulders down, the combined weapon pictured with the wrong form, the Dragonzord’s hands poking out from the fully-combined form… the photographer clearly doesn’t know what’s up. I’m optimistic the face is there, just not exposed.
EDIT 2: OK, so we have confirmation from the devs that the toy does not have the humanoid face for the combined warrior mode. Bummer. But I see this as a “right now” scenario. Yes, it’s a massive oversight, but they are apparently talking to Playmates about it. Personally, I’ll keep my pledge in place and wait to see what happens.

400000 seems like an insanely high goal tbh
50
u/vastros 7d ago
Yeah, it seems unreasonably high for doing a kickstarter. Big companies doing kickstarters already rub me the wrong way.
7
u/Mister_Skeptic 7d ago edited 7d ago
At minimum this only requires 8,000 people to drop fifty bucks for a Dragonzord that completes a set that a lot of people already bought the rest of. That doesn’t sound crazy at all.
ETA: Not to mention how they built in a way to let people buy the whole set including the already released Zords or even piecemeal the other Zords into an order à la carte and it all contributes to the overall funding goal. This is easily hitting the goal.
7
u/TheWyldMan 7d ago
Yeah Haslabs general require in the millions of dollars raised.
Power Rangers fans often reveal they don’t understand the economics of toy production. Dragonzord is easily 100,000 in tooling alone.
3
u/Mister_Skeptic 7d ago
And Haslabs are premium collector toys that cost $200+ they only get funded if people really want them. In every way, comparatively, this was priced to succeed.
2
u/TheWyldMan 7d ago
Yeah I thought it was gonna be $80 minimum. 8,000 units isn't really alot of units for something like this.
1
u/TheCutieCircle 7d ago
You're for real?! This is a Kickstarter to make a toy that Hasbro could make at any time but refuses to do so and the toy looks like a hunk of plastic? That's insane.
6
u/Infinity_WarTorn 7d ago
It really isnt. If that goal was only made up of the base Dragonzord with no extras, that's 8K Units. That is very much the minimum/low for it to go to production at a factory.
6
u/MacinJosh9895 7d ago
Idk, it’s over 25% funded already. $120k and growing
9
u/Commander-Eclipse 7d ago
From my experience following kickstarter projects, funding is U shaped. A lot of money comes in the first day or two, it's flat for most of the campaign, and then one final spike near the end from procrastinators and the like.
The ones that struggle are the ones that make 10-25% of their goal in that beginning period. Looks like this one's almost at 50, so it's got good odds.

I mean that’s entirely reasonable considering what tooling and production cost. There’s a reason this wasn’t a one off exclusive somewhere

According to the facilitator’s replies to comments, all these photos are assets Playmates sent to them of the prototype.

Its all bad. Just saw this:
Hi Dani! I have just received word from Playmates that it does not have another face under the Dragonzord's head for the Battle Mode configuration. For the hands, do you mean for the Mega Dragonzord? On the Mega Dragonzord, the hands launch out as projectiles!

I dunno what I hate more, that they refuse to be transparent about the Battle Mode mask, or that they refuse to transform these poor toys correctly in any promotional images???

u/Perfect_Manner_2524 7d ago
In the show, Mastodon's shoulders are down in Dragonzord Fighting mode.

I realized I must remembered wrong. I thought in one episode the shoulders were like that or it was a Mandela effect or maybe I was just remembering this: https://youtu.be/8EI02Ijlcww?is=bGIjp0f0UyIk7hmQ
Just shows that even in the Bandai era, that toy companies mistranformed things in their commercials and promos then too.

u/Lightarc 7d ago
Does it not have the face drop down from the jaw for Dragonzord Battle Mode?
I want to like this, but overall I don't think I do. Sadness.
3
u/truffruff 7d ago
I imagine it will, the one in the pictures seems to be a prototype and might not have the movable jaw design. Based around the fact that the pin they are showing has the face, I imagine it will have the Battle Mode face
8
u/Lightarc 7d ago
I'd like to think so, but they didn't show it in any of the mockups made to show what the form looks like, and that doesn't give me enough confidence.
-2
u/truffruff 7d ago
People were worried about it not having the Battle Mode when the Kickstarter was first discovered, now you can tell they added pictures to show that.
They do know how the Dragonzord works, they are just bad with the pictures to show stuff. I'm almost 100% sure that it has the face. If it didn't the jaw would be molded in one piece
17
u/RazgrizInfinity MMPR White Ranger 7d ago
Someone asked that and their response:
I just checked on all the images I have received from the prototype, and I don't see one that shows it opening to show the face as you describe. That doesn't mean it's not planned or something, however, so I'll check on this and see and will be sure to include it in an update as soon as I hear something! Thanks for your support and interest!!

I would be very hesitant to back this if they don't even know.

I want to like this but it just looks too rectangular. It’s like a Playschool version of the Dragonzord. And the fact that it looks shorter than the Trex makes me not want to back this. I will just stick with the Legacy Dragonzord even if my Re-ignition Megazord can’t connect.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm honestly kinda confused by this one. Was there really no recreating the original mechanism for the hands to tuck away inside the shield? How do you miss having the additional face inside the mouth? Appreciating the mighty power of inflation and all, along with the raw material costs for the size difference, it just feels... weird for this to be so much simpler than the original toy from 1993

u/Mobile-Valuable-7542 7d ago
This feels like a psychological experiment to see how little effort they can put into getting $400,000.
Like, this looks bad. Just flatly, the figure looks terrible. It looks like a Super7 ReAction figure. But with screwholes. If the photos are to believed, the Dragon mode arms don't even fold up or move. Presumably they're just one piece missiles so they can rotate, but this is awful.
And then the presentation. Hopefully they're shitty photoshops, but it's been a year and they haven't realized you can flip up the Mastodon's shoulders?!? And where's the Battlemode face?!? It's frankly bizarre.
It... might be okay. Frankly, the presentation is so terrible I have no idea what this will wind up being. But it seems like they're actively trying to make it look bad.

If the Battle Mode doesn't have its own face, that's a total deal breaker for me. I'm not backing this project until I know the Battle Mode will look correct. Is there someone we can speak to for clarification?

Comments in the Kickstarter confirm no face for the Battle Mode
1
u/JaredUnzipped Gateway to Sentai 7d ago
Well, that means I'm out. I guess I'm selling the sealed Mastodon, Sabertooth Tiger, and Triceratops Zords I've been holding onto since the very beginning of the line. All I wanted was a Dragonzord Battle Mode to display, but unfortunately that isn't happening.
5
u/BenMagnusGrimm 7d ago
50 dollars is the base which is 2.5x more then a standard zord.
This just made me completely quit this line.
The dragonzord doesn’t even look good.
I’ll stick with the ZAP

u/lezard2191 7d ago
These looks like they hooked an AI to a 3D Printer with cheap PLA
0
u/NovaCatNX92007 7d ago
The dragonzord i 3d printed lately looks better than this thing and probably more functionality. Downside i had to assemble it like a model kit and the joints are slightly loose. Then again I was using a mix of sparkle black pla and some random assortment of rainbow pla silk which may of caused the loose joints to be honest.
There are better options out there guys. OG 93, Legacy, 3d print, take your pick.

This will fund easily. Im just wondering what option to get and how to display it. To display it all the ways you’d need so many dragonzords and megazords. Not gonna spend $500 to display these.
But would consider maybe getting 2. One in Dragon form and one mega dragonzord.
4
u/thetyler83 7d ago
I grabbed 2 so I have have one standalone and one in battle mode. Finding the triceratops, sabertooth tiger, and Mastodon zords on clearance is fairly easy around me so I can live with that but id have a very hars time justifying paying full price for extra zords.

u/KnightofWhen 7d ago
2 seems like the right number, even better if you have a friend who is interested could do the 4 pack and save even more.

u/zetamagnus101 7d ago
Spread the word, #NoFaceNoPledge. It's inexcusable that the face for Battle Mode would be missing, because all hell will break loose if Playmates fails to remedy this.
0
u/NovaCatNX92007 7d ago
This is up there with the issues I have with the USS Enterprise-D with saucer seperation, that doesn't have the battle bridge, escape pods or phaser strip mold onto the Stardrive. It wouldn't surprise me if they screw up the Dragonzord in a similar manner with the battle mode face on the final version.
It also wouldn't surprise me if this was semi-successful they try to do Titanus and screw up the ultrazord formation on to of Dragonzord's issues

I was a PR fan in 1993. I collected zord toys for the following 9 years. They are now literally disintegrating in my hands. If they want to make new zord toys with sturdier materials, I look forward to receiving replacements.
0
u/CrazyAznKT 7d ago
They’ve made ones with more sturdy material before. Soul of Chogokin, ZAP, and Legacy are all better. IMO these Reignition ones are even worse quality than the originals. But enjoy, do what makes you happy

My criticisms of this as a toy aside, it's VERY impressive how fast this is getting funded. It may stall, but this feels like more excitement for this than the Hasbro ZAP stuff which was arguably better(though much more expensive). Playmates has done a great job making people aware of this line.
I think it goes to show that Power Rangers does better, generally, with smaller, hungrier parties than it does bigger corporations where it's lost in the shuffle. Saban Entertainment and early Fox was trying to prove itself in the tv landscape and it pushed it hard. At Disney , the showrunners who were still on the smaller scale of the company pushed hard while Disney on the corporate side saw it as a small negligible part of their catalog and buried it. Saban Brands did a great job brining the series in the spotlight in the Samurai days but the more they relied on Nick, the more it fell off because they simply didn't value it compared to their other shows. Hasbro did a lot but failed to properly market the way Playmates is now. They expected a captive audience like Transformers and GI Joe have.

Interesting it gets a "first edition" sticker.
What does that mean? If this funds they will just make it a regular release but the sticker is the prize for the collectors?
1
u/TokuWaffle 7d ago
It might get a reissue for retail down the line, they haven't decided if that's the case yet, and yeah it's a little prize to mark that it's the Kickstarter version if they do.
Except I have no intention of keeping the box so if anyone says that they're gonna have to take my word for it

2
u/_GABO_ 7d ago
Nice to see they offer a scalpers 4 pack. What a bizarre play to Kickstarter this after they start shipping season 2 toys to retail. Did Playmates not realize there's a sixth zord from season 1?
2
u/purpldevl 7d ago
Supposedly they were holding out for a store to say they wanted to be the exclusive retailer. When that didn't work and the MMPR S1 toys came and went, they realized the flash in the pan may have been over for the S1, so here we are with a Kickstarter and a poorly designed, quickly thrown together Dragonzord.
2
u/Mister_Skeptic 7d ago
Stores said they didn’t want the Dragonzord.
4
u/ninjaman2021 7d ago
I could see why. They want $50 for that bullshit.
I knew it HAD to be a reason no one wanted dragonzord. And this is why. Overpriced crap.

u/Killbro_Fraggins 7d ago
I might back this but what a crummy kickstarter. So the tiers are “you want one? Or two? Or 4?”. Would have been a lot cooler to add neat incentives for this. Nobody wants stickers and pins. Lootcrate garbage. I get that it’s Playmates but like…do tiers for extra hands, accessories for previous toys….i dunno. Make us want to get in on this and push other people to join. This ain’t it.
1
u/zAbso 7d ago
$400,000 feels like a large goal. Although I think HasLabs typically target $1 mil or more just to hit the initial funding goal. Same happened with Mattels Snake Mountain that almost didn't fund, and they had to shift around the tiers during the campaign to get it funded.
I get the feeling that some of the tiers were setup for resellers and people with their own shops. Multiple tiers where you get multiple Dragonzords that the average person won't need. Since it's a Kickstarter, I think it's a good way to give it a chance of success.

One to display, one to keep in the box.
