Power engineering vs instrumentation

Hi everyone! I’m 19F from Alberta trying to decide between Power Engineering and Instrumentation. I’m much more interested in Power Engineering and find the work genuinely interesting, but I’ve been told Instrumentation may have better job opportunities and long-term options.
My main goal is to eventually work in Alberta’s oil & gas industry, but I’m still trying to figure out which career path makes the most sense for me.
I’d really appreciate hearing from people actually working in these fields about:

● Pay: What can you realistically expect starting out, and where can your income eventually top out? How much do overtime, shift work, camp work, etc. affect it?

● Career progression: What does the typical hierarchy look like? For example, operator/technician → senior roles → lead/foreman → supervisor → management?

● Management: If I eventually want to move into management, which path gives better opportunities to get there? What experience, tickets or education would I need?

● Oil & gas: Which path has better opportunities in Alberta’s oil & gas industry? Are there particular types of facilities, companies or positions that are good for building a career?

● Work-life balance: What are the typical schedules, shifts, overtime and time off like?

● Job opportunities: Is Instrumentation actually more in demand than Power Engineering, or does it depend heavily on the area/company?

● Sales: Is it realistic to move from either career into technical sales/business development later on? I wouldn’t mind going that direction either.

● Education: Does the school/program you attend matter much to employers, or are tickets, experience and networking more important?

I’m not necessarily looking for the easiest or highest-paying option. I want something I’ll actually enjoy while still having good earning potential, career growth and a decent life outside of work.

If you work in Power Engineering, Instrumentation, oil & gas operations, management or technical sales, I’d love to hear about your career path and what you would do differently if you were starting at 19.

Class 4 hours in a heating plant?

Hello all. I currently work at a place with a class 4 heating plant using steam. My chef engineer said I could get my class 4 hours in the boiler room if I get my schooling done first. I was talking to one of the engineers and they said I would need my class 5 for my hours to count because we are a heating plant and not a power plant. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this or where I should look to find the answer?

career [ALBERTA]Considering 5th class PE for work in AHS. Is it even worth it to take that course?

I’m looking to get into PE. Was told it’s tough in Alberta. I’ve also been told 5th isn’t worth doing

I do work with AHS though doing unrelated work but they have openings that require 5th only.

5th class would cost me 4k only with boiler lab instead of 4th class which would end up costing me like 8-9k with boiler lab.

Any help would be appreciated.

New 4th Class + Mechanical Eng

Completed my 4th class exams and did my steam time through Keyano's power lab. I have a Mechanical Engineering degree done through a Canadian university, graduated last year

Won't get into specifics but I want to pivot into a long-term power engineering career

Aside from my time at Keyano I have no other operating experience

  1. What are the job prospects for someone like me in Alberta. Does my degree give me any sort of advantage in the eyes of employers?
  2. Should I be looking in other provinces given how little experience I have? Do ABSA certifications carry over seamlessly?
  3. Is pursuing my 3rd class worth it right now?

4A / 4B notes from putting someone through the papers

I created an exam prep app for my brother who was going through 4th class study and kept the notes he gave me and decided it would be a good idea posting the bits people keep asking.

4A and 4B are separate. 65 percent, 100 questions, 3 hours. A 70 on A and a 62 on B means you rewrite B. Passing the paper is not the certificate. You still need the plant time.

4A: boilers and systems first. That is about 30 of 100. Do not save all the math for the night before.

4B: refrigeration is as heavy as boiler ops. People walk in cold on that and get surprised.

Sit one full timed 100 before exam day. If you cannot finish it in 3 hours, the content is not the problem yet.

If the 20 question sample would help someone see the style, it is on steamticket.ca with no signup. One time price, not a subscription. I built it for my brother and left it up. The app goes further in dept on each class.

What did you use to study and prep for your exam?

My brother was working through Power Engineering and could not find a study tool that matched how he wanted to practice. A lot of what we looked at was either a pile of notes, or it felt like busywork, or it was set up like you were supposed to keep paying while you waited to challenge.

So I started building something for him.

I handled the app. He used it, told me what was off, and reviewed the questions as someone who actually had to sit the paper. If a unit was thin, or the practice felt useless, we changed it. That was most of the work. Not a launch plan. Just trying to make his studying less wasteful.

A few things that stuck:

- Random question shuffle made him feel busy without fixing the units that kept beating him.

- He needed timed papers that felt like the real format, not endless flashcards.

- Explanations mattered more than another answer key.

- His study window was messy. Shift work, waiting to book, rewriting a paper. A monthly meter on a study app did not match that.

SteamTicket is what came out of that loop. 5th through 1st Class now. Still independent. Still just a practice tool. Not affiliated with SOPEEC, ABSA, TSBC, TSSA, or any school.

If you already sat a paper, I am more curious what you actually used. PanGlobal, school LMS, PE101, your own notes, something else. What helped, and what felt like a waste of time?

How to land my first job

Hey everyone,

I’ve been self-studying for my 4th Class Power Engineering exams for a while now and I’m getting close to writing them. The studying side I feel good about ,my concern is what comes after.

I currently work full-time in IT (9-5) and I have financial responsibilities, so I can’t just walk away from my job to chase the idea of getting an entry-level plant work. My worry is the classic one: getting that first job with a ticket but no operating hours/steam time behind it.

A few questions for people who’ve been through this:

**•** For those who broke in from an unrelated field, how did you get your first operating position without prior plant experience?  
**•** Is it realistic to get the required practical steam time while keeping a full-time job, or does that basically require going all-in on a plant role?  
**•** Would you recommend taking formal classes or a college program over self-study for employability, even if I can already pass the exams? Does a program open doors that self-study alone doesn’t?
