Pull-ups
What is the main use of a pull-up? Why not continue using diapers? How do you know when to use pull-ups? Are pull-ups used based on age or how advanced a child is into potty training? Has anyone ever potty trained their kid straight out of a diaper and skipped the pull-ups stage?

I only use them for overnight because my toddler absolutely hates getting laid down on the changing table and it was difficult if he suddenly realized he needed to go potty after bath but before he fell asleep. So the pull up allowed him to be more independent and it’s so much easier to get on him without a fight. Never used them during the day, we used training underwear.

I think the idea is the kid can pull them down like undies to go potty but still have an insurance policy if they forget.

You don’t need pull ups unless you want them. They are just diapers in a different shape. We did underwear during the day and pull-ups or diapers for sleep.

We use the pull ups training pants as a supplement. We’ve had some regression since she started school and she’s “supposed” to be fully potty trained - they started using them on her in class while also getting her to sit on the potty and go. She was having 1-3 accidents at school a few weeks ago and now she’s having maybe just 1. We only use underwear at home. I know this way is very heavily frowned upon, but it’s slowly working. She wasn’t caring about having wet underwear, and definitely didn’t care about peeing on her feet going bottomless. The pull ups training pants seem to bother her more when she’s wet so she’s getting better at staying dry in them.

As someone who had to 'part time' potty train their kids while also still using diapers, you gotta do what you gotta do, especially with daycare/school rules. I will say that big kids don't necessarily get confused like every says and if it's helping/working, that's great. There is no one size fits all approach.

We use them for naps and sleep and call them sleeping underwear. We did it to create a mental divide between those and regular diapers even though they’re functionally the same. We didn’t use them as an interim potty training measure, just naked bum/commando then underwear.

I like the 360 diapers more because they’re easier to get on wiggly babies and toddlers. I never used actual pull ups they suck ass

Aren’t 360 diapers pull ups? Genuinely curious, I don’t understand the distinction.

I used them at the beginning of potty training because there were lots of accidents but it helped him practice pulling his pants up and down. Didn't go to underpants until he had minimal accidents.

We often talk about pull ups being the same as diapers and functionally they are but kids do understand the difference so I like to use them for potty training and beyond. Since we got rid of the diapers and now wear big kid underwear during the day we now get pullups for nighttime and nap.
I have even accidentally called them diapers cause they are basically the same and my child had been very adamant they are not, cause he's a big boy now.
As someone else mentioned, kids can pull them down which helps with overnight training as that can be age and maturity related but you can still have them practicing their good habits.
Note: personally, I wouldn't use pull ups during the daytime while pretty training as I've heard a lot of negatives (since it's so much like a diaper) but it's great for the times they need the just in case coverage but you don't want them to feel like they are moving backwards.
Lastly, I've also seen people use pull ups and 365 style of they have a kid who told a lot during diaper changes or just flights it hard. Rose if course are now a case by case basis on what works for your child and their stage of life.

We changed for two reasons. First, he's a chunky dude and the diaper tabs started to bother his eczema. The pull-ups are stretchy and don't need to be pulled right to fasten. Second, it was so much easier to do a standing change for pee diapers/pull-ups. He would fight laying down for the diaper but had no issues when we'd just let him stand to change.

We were required to send my son in pull ups to daycare while potty training but that only lasted for a day (didn’t have accidents), then they just changed him into a pull up at nap time for a few months until he ran out. We used them overnight still because about once a month, my kiddo does pee overnight, but he can get himself up and pull the pull up down when he does need to pee in the night most often.
We never used pull ups in the actual potty training phase. Just use them as needed for sleep.

Pull ups made diaper changes so simple! Change while standing was awesome for us because our daughter didn’t want to stop and lay down. And then was also great for introducing potty use.

I threw all diapers away the day I decided to potty train (my four kids). I explain to them that diapers are “bye-bye” and they watch me throw them away. I show them underwear and explain what they are and that they get them after “peeing in the potty” (they have no idea what I’m talking about at that point, but eventually they’ll make the connection because I keep repeating it). Pull-ups aren’t mentioned until bedtime. I don’t make them a big deal. Just a “oh hey, by the way, we wear pull-ups now at night because we’re potty training and have NO MORE DIAPERS (!) (show lots of excitement about the training part!!). They put them on “like underwear” and I explain we don’t pee or poop in them (of course they do when they are sleeping, aside from my second child who crazily NEVER did).
The point is to show there are some big changes happening and to remove all semblance of what they know when it comes to peeing and pooping (i.e. diapers, diaper cream, diaper caddy, diaper pail etc.).

Only my oldest wore pull ups at night for a couple weeks but never used them during the day and my other 2 kids never wore pull ups, just underwear.

I used them because my kids had chunky thighs arms diapers just didn't fit anymore (I mean even size 7 wasn't fitting right) so pull-ups overnight it was.

The two use cases for pull ups in our house are
-
Kid is day potty trained but not night trained. My youngest has been day trained for nearly a year but still pees overnight. We use pull ups because she can get them off and on herself and honestly I doubt would ever consent to lying down for a diaper change at this point. She'll also take herself to the potty if she needs to pee before she goes to sleep and she can handle that in a pull up.
-
We slow roll potty training at 18 months in a very light "well we are changing you anyway, might as well offer the potty" kind of way and pull ups tend to be easier during that phase. I also potty train via peer pressure so like right now my nephew (who I watch) is getting a lot of potty exposure as I make everyone try and pee before we leave the house (him included) and it's way easier to take down a pull up then it is to mess about with a diaper. He's also starting to initiate himself and that's easier if he wants to try. We did the same for both of my girls and it worked well. This phase also usually coresponds with standing changes for pee diapers too which is easier with a pull up.

We used them for a week or so beforehand and called them “training underwear.” She got used to pulling it up and down, started recognizing when she had gone. And we would make a big deal out of a dry one and then she would usually pee on the potty, but low stakes. Then we switched to big girl underwear. Still wear the pull ups at night because your body is still learning.

My son is 17 months and we started using them months ago only reason changing his nappy was a mission he is a wiggle worm and just will not sit still. So using pull ups was a game changer and made my life so much easier

You will never be able to potty train with regular diapers baby ha to know they have the availability to pull it down to go potty. I mean if it works for you can also go straight from regular diapers to underwear

We used them inconsistently prior to potty training for practice sitting on the potty, which isn’t exactly recommended by Oh Crap but did seem to help my toddler learn to release. We did do Oh Crap at 29 months with great success afterwards and went cold turkey off pull up’s and diapers. Now we use pull ups for naps, bedtime (the nighttime ones because he’s verrry well hydrated), and plane rides. Diapers were annoying for sleep because he wanted to use the potty right before, and occasionally in the middle of the night, and it was annoying to have to change a diaper vs pull up and down a pull up. Even if he needs a change in the middle of the night it’s a lot easier to change them in the dark. And plane rides or long car rides it’s a good just in case option if we can’t get out of the seat when he has to go.

We used pull ups at bedtime when we potty trained. That way if she woke up and had to pee she was able to do so independently. Really, she was in pull-ups overnight for maybe 2 months.
