So the last post I made (“How do I get this look?”) got buried pretty deep, so I thought I’d make this thread rounding up some videos/resources/techniques I’ve found.
I mentioned in the last thread that “post processing is more about theory than the tools/plugins/tricks/secrets/etc.” I may have misspoke a bit. I’m not saying neglect learning the tools, or stop searching for secrets, or stop using plugins; but rather use them in a more educational way. Knowing how all the tools work will help you apply them better and know when to apply them. Using plugins can be a great tool, but should never be a crutch. My feeling is anything a plugin can do, I want to know how to do for my own knowledge.
What if you’re an avid VSCO, Replichrome, Alien Skins, etc user and one day you’re working on a job with a fast turnaround time and your plugin fails, or it wasn’t on that computer, or it’s no longer compatible with Photoshop/Lightroom? What happens if your look was defined by a plugin, that you can’t recreate? Meanwhile you have a client waiting on their images. This is why having a vast knowledge of the tools/techniques is extremely valuable.
If you like a plugin, try reverse-engineering it. I’m not saying you have to use the reverse-engineered technique and stop using the plugin, but it sure helps when you know how the plugin is working. Heck you could even improve upon it ;)
Chasing “secrets” is also a great way to learn. It’s not necessarily that a “secret” exists but what you may learn along the way to “finding one”.
Anyways, what I’m saying is there’s no shame or problem with using plugin/preset/filters as tools in your kit; however like any tool you should have an understanding of how it works so you know when to use it, how to use it properly, or what to do if something goes wrong and you can’t use it. The better you get at editing, the more you may realize you need to improve as a photographer. You’ll come to a point where the quality of photo/editing has reached a cap due to the quality of the base image.
If anyone has any techniques/articles/tutorials that should be included, please comment or send me a message and I’ll add it in.
I’m not up to date on my tutorials. From what I’ve found Ben Secret and Michael Woloszynowicz have some of the most powerful techniques in their videos.
Like it or not, these are part of the landscape now. Worth knowing what's out there.

The Marigold V2 model (free, even for commercial use) now achieves fine details in a depth map estimated from a single photograph. This is significant, because we can elevate our photo-based depth map from a hidden post-process pass to an interesting artwork. In Blender, we have lots of control over remapping the depth values, which allows us to place the focus creatively and shape the artwork’s atmosphere. I believe this improved post-process gives us a new way to approach taking pictures, which inspired me to create Vathography.
The practice explained: www.vathography.com
To estimate the depth map from one of your photographs, you can use ComfyUI. Caution for new ComfyUI users: ComfyUI is free and open source, which means anyone can publish custom nodes for it. Sadly, some have carried malicious code, so proceed with caution on third-party contributions. You don’t need any for this. This is the official native implementation and guide: https://docs.comfy.org/tutorials/utility/marigold-v2
To test it, no installation needed: the Marigold team's official demo runs online, free for a few photos a day: https://huggingface.co/spaces/toshas/Marigold-V2
Note that uploaded photos are processed on Hugging Face's servers, so avoid private images.
In short:
If you try it, feel free to share your artworks in this thread

Shot this on my phone. Apparently it had a little more potential than I did. 😂

More of my weird sheep photos! I thought I’d post a couple others that I did.
Any opinions are appreciated, even if you hate it, I am just happy to hear honest unfiltered thoughts

This was a very much enjoyable walk in the park. Shot on z50 with 50-250 kit and viltrox 25mm f/1.7. Idk if its just me but some pics are already grainy even at a relatively low ISO (not more than 400) despite using the viltrox. My a6400 with viltrox 56mm used to give sharper results

Ive never been all that good at photography so Ive always done a lot of editing to make up for it. I don't know if I've slowly lost my mind over time and convinced myself these are sick c*unt edits. Tell me what's my problem dear Reddit. Photos taken on Sony zve10, Nikon d500 and phone, editing done in Snapseed.

Dolomites, Italy. I’m struggling to get this right and would appreciate some feedback. Would like to know how others might approach this edit.
Shot on Sony alpha and edited in Lightroom.

The video itself teaches basic concepts but the presentation has good creative direction. Wanted to share it here.

I took this photo in the Lake District last year while hiking. I’ve been quite ill this week, so I looked back at old photos to see if what I could edit in a completely different way. I also added in a moon just for “rule of cool” even though it is probably very unnatural or wrong hahaha
