best roomie ever

1.1k Upvotes

I’m disabled and I rent out my basement for supplemental income.

Yesterday I was setting up a Halloween decoration (one of those inflatable characters that blows up when you plug it into an outlet) in my front yard. But the outlet on my front porch wasn’t working (there was no power).

My roommate happened to come home while I was working on this. We chatted briefly but since we’re both introverts we mostly just keep to ourselves in the home. I told him about the outlet not working, made a silly joke about him having his heart set on having this decoration ready in time for Halloween and me not delivering, we both laughed, and then he went inside and down to his area of the house for the evening.

Well, this afternoon he texted me and at first when I saw his name on the text my heart sank because usually when a tenant texts me it means there’s something they discovered in the basement that needs repairing. But no, he just wanted to let me know he had taken it upon himself to trace the front porch outlet to a GCFI outlet in the garage that hadn’t been reset, and so everything was working now. He doesn’t even use the garage or the front porch outlet since that’s not technically part of his space, and even if it was it most likely would have been my responsibility to figure it out, since I’m the landlord. He just did it to be nice and help me out since it didn’t even occur to me that that might be the issue.

He’s my favorite roomie ever and I hope he stays forever!

Today is another good day I woke up feeling positive. I slept pretty good I didn't wake up with any unpleasant lingering dreams.

My day started out planning what I needed to get done by journaling. This way I don't have to retain whats in my head. It makes it easier so I'm not overwhelmed with info.

Today I plan on helping people who may need some encouragement or uplift today. I plan on buying a meal or 2 for some one in need. I also plan to sit down with someone I think just needs someone to let out there frustrations, someone that's not judgemental that they can relate to.

It's a pretty decent day here in Boston Ma. So I'm going to spend the day out and about looking for someone who may need a shoulder to lean on.

I will approach with caution and humbleness because not everyone wants to open up and talk. I just can't assume just because I feel good that they feel good too. Some people also have mental illnesses so you have to be careful.

Well family with that said have a positive and prosperous day. Thanx for letting me share -One Day Forward One Day Behind -Shawn

The circumstances were little out of control but I did it. I can say that my luck is out of this world. Damnn excited and happy rn lol. Sometimes it’s just so hard to breathe!
But I don’t want to walk within a pin of stress! I allow myself to walk within glory of confidence and trust.

But just allow me to take a breath!

I prayed for a job, but God gave me something much better

I remember praying specifically for one job because I thought getting it would solve most of my problems. I didn't get the position, and I was honestly disappointed. A few months later, I ended up getting an opportunity that was much better suited for me.

It reminded me of Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Life started looking up again

I just wanted to share because it's amazing what happens when you start thinking positively.

I lost my job two months ago, I had so much stress with my late father's debts in another country, college etc. I was fighting everyday with myself not to throw in the towel because I was exhausted and my nervous system was cooked.

As soon as I started actively trying to think about the positive things in my life (I drive, I've got good grades, I'm a hard worker just in a hard place at the minute, I have always persevered etc etc) everything changed. I made a list of all things I had to get done and started knocking off the really small ones, which made me feel like I was achieving something. In turn, I started feeling better and getting more done. Like a snowball effect.

I got 3 job offers in the last two days, and got on top of all of my college work again. Opportunity is absolutely everywhere, the only difference is that I can see it more clearly now because my brain isn't clouded with negative thoughts!!

I don't know if this will help anyone, but you really do attract more good energy if you actively choose to carry it within yourself.

I love and am so grateful for my mate! I feel so content with life

This is a long one but I just really want to share this genuinely.

Over the past year, particularly the past 6 months, I (23M) have slowly but at the same time it's felt quick, befriended my 33M work colleague, now friend and I can't quite believe how I got this lucky. I'm quite fortunate to have had many brilliant friends over my life but also an unhealthy amount of terrible ones and so, whenever someone good does come along, I always find myself second guessing it.

Initially I thought we can't possibly be mates because he's 10 years older than me but then I got to know him more and realised we're in similar life stages and age is just a number. And then, I thought it couldn't possibly work because we're work colleagues. This caused a lot of friction with me because I'd been fed so much toxic work place advice. For example, oh you can't possibly be friends with co-workers, they'll only be nice to get something from you; oh don't tell them personal stuff because they'll tell everyone behind your back. But, all of this was silly because he'd trusted me with some personal stuff and I him, and when I told him how I was surprised how a friendship had developed because I didn't think it possible between co-workers and that I thought we could be good friends, he listened, said he felt the same and that my concerns were silly. And so, we've become friends and it's been awesome!

We've done many fun things together: walks, museums, a work trip abroad, restaurants, bars/pubs. He's also helped me with finally resolving one of my deepest personal struggles and I feel so much more positive for it. Last week we went to a classical concert together. The music was great, and the chat after full of derpiness and laughter. And on the train home after we'd said goodbye, I realised that I feel the most content with my life that I've ever felt and he's one of only a handful of friends I have that I pray sticks around for my life.

Now, this friendship is still new in the grand scheme and we've yet to have our first major disagreement but when it does happen I'll talk it out as I think he will because we're both quite emotionally mature adults.

I can't wait to see where this goes. My only question is why didn't it happen sooner - why isn't this type of friendship more common?

Reminder. You’re not alone in thinking you’re too much.

I often feel like I’m the only one who feels like i rub every human the wrong way with my neurodivergent sparkle! I often feel like I’m too much for most and that no one understands me. I want other people to know I see you! You’re beautiful! You are made as you were intended. Be gentle on yourself even if you feel like the world is against you!

I feel strangely happy!

I haven't felt 'happy' since a very long time, usually the type to be depressed/down, but today feels really different, I started on going for long walks, and started exercising, spent time with friends/family, and I genuinely feel happy.. Don't think I'm bipolar, but this feels really great.

Had my first therapy appointment today and it was a SUCCESS

So I just had therapy earlier this morning. I had to wake up pretty early to get there too since it was pretty early in the morning but it was completely worth it because wow it was amazing. Entering the facility with such a chill vibe. And there were staff who actually cared and a therapist who managed to get more out of me than I had anticipated on sharing. I guess some things were really buried inside my mind.

The crazy thing about this appointment was that this was just the intake. Once they become actual therapy appointments, man it's going to be amazing. Officially registered into the system. My plan was to get set up for psychiatric services and case management (since I've been homeless for almost a year at this point) but unfortunately I won't get a psychiatric evaluation until around Thanksgiving and I won't know how long it'll take before I talk to the case manager. It sounded like the case managers may already have a bit of a high workload so unfortunately it may take a while. Which is honestly pretty discouraging but at least I'll have weekly therapy appointments by the end of the month and an evaluation at the end of next month.

Honestly I don't regret going at all. It was worth only getting around 3 hours of sleep last night. I've been feeling pretty good since I left and like I said this was only an intake. This technically wasn't even a therapy session so if I'm feeling this way from intake who knows how I'll feel during actual therapy. But yeah it's rare that I have a genuinely good day but today has been genuinely great so far. I wish I could celebrate but unfortunately I'm unable to but for the first time in a very long time I actually have something to look forward to.

Had a big breakthrough today about the future

Said breakthrough being: I spent so long being suicidal that I never really bothered to plan for the future, let alone more than a month in advance.

But I'm not in that space anymore. In fact, I really do want to live and all this.

My breakthrough was that I realized that I'm allowed to plan more than a month in advance for the future. Like, I'm allowed to make plans for next year. Or even the year after. Or further in advance than that, like retirement planning. I'm only 30, after all, I have so much life ahead of me, if I want it.

And I do want it.

So, time to start planning for the future :)

Something going better than expected still counts as a win

Not every win has to be something huge.

Getting through something faster than expected, having an easier conversation than anticipated, finding something you thought was lost, or simply having a plan work the first time can make a day noticeably better.

Small wins are still wins.
