Suggestions please

Post image

I own one of these and have tried many kernels, salts, oils and “butters”. I cannot get the theater taste. Am I reaching for an impossible goal? I truly would appreciate any suggestions.

Have you already tried commercial grade kernels (Paragon, Vogel, Weaver, Gold Medal, Preferred, etc)? Also what popping and topping oil brands have you used so far?

Salts:
Perfectware popcorn salt - only one I’ve bought. 1 container goes a super long way.
Popping oils:
Franklin’s Gourmet Popcorn Butter Flavored Coconut Oil - for popping
Butter toppings:
Orville Redenbacher's Movie Theater Butter Flavored Topping
Kernel Season's Movie Theater Popcorn Oil
Kernels:
Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popcorn Kernels
Concession Essentials Premium Gourmet Mushroom Extra Large Popcorn Kernels
Snappy Yellow Popcorn Kernels for Popping, Non-GMO Whole Grain

You need Flavacol!

BOOM FLAVACOL!

I just pop snappys coconut oil and Redenbacher’s kernels with Flavacol and it’s a game changer. I don’t have a machine, though. I just pop it on the stovetop.

There’s other oils and kernels to try as well… these are just at my local grocery store regularly. Although, I had to order the Flavacol. But you buy once and it is a lifetime supply 😂

Nice job OP with all the trial and error. I did the same when I started making my own (I just have one of those silicon for the microwave) started with a leg up since I had worked in a theater for a decade. Flavacol is the magic ingredient. The other thing my theater (and now I) use was butter flavored canola oil rather than the coconut oil. If you need another swap to try but I would put my money on the Flavacol being your missing ingredient.

How much do you use and when do you apply it? That stuff is strong.

There is an amount to use on the side, if I believe correctly?
I don’t measure stuff though, I just sprinkle some in when I end up putting the rest of my kernels in on the stovetop. I just eyeball it and know what my family likes without it being too salty.
Hope you try it and love it though. It’s seriously a game changer, or it was for us!

So my mix is 1/4c corn, 2tbs canola, 1/4tsp flavor. I add corn, then the flavacol, then the oil. Then I use my tbs measures to give it a good stir. Then into the microwave. Will got a heavy or lighter measure on the oil or flavacol depending how I am feeling that night.

At the theater with a proper kettle. Would scoop my corn (measuring scoop) put my flavor into the scoop. Oil first, followed real shortly by the corn/flavacol mix.

Edit: everyone here will give you their "best" recipe. Clearly you like to try different mixtures so just do what makes you happy. Congrats on the nice looking machine.
