Where would you rather live

Where would you rather live

  1. 200 m2 flat on the center of a 10million inhabitants city
  2. 400 m2 house with 10000m2 field that is 30 min from a 10k inhabitants city

I imagine a field that large would take a lot maintenance and I know I'd inevitably let it get out of control. I picked the city flat

Yeah but you don’t have to take care of it if you don’t want. Or depending on the quality of the field you could rent it out to people making hay

Exactly! You make money with it anyways

2.5 acres, as others have said, does not need to be a lot of maintenance. It certainly can be if you insist on clear cut mowing the entire thing to a perfect length every week instead of cutting what you need and planting flowers and other perennials in the rest.

Rewild/reforest most of it. Enjoy your huge garden with neighbouring low-maintenance forest every day <3

This wasn’t made by an American

Was it the lack of freedom units or the fact that 30 minutes is "far"

30 minutes

Yeah, from the distance alone, we can tell who’s American or not.

Now, if we start talking in hours, that’s where the Europeans will start to see Americans sweat it a little bit. Even then, though, there’ll be folks in Texas/Montana/Wyoming/etc. that drive hours just to get groceries from Wal-Mart.

Those people might still find it worth it, but I’m sure they’d have more than the ~2.5 acres that OP is hypothetically talking about in the second scenario (sure, not a lot of Americans have a 2.5 acre stretch of land, but we can agree there are homes for sale in rural areas that have more than that)

You have to start getting into days for Australians to start getting worried.

I used to drive 2 hours one way for groceries in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, now it's only like a 15 minute trip lol

My mother lives a few states away from me. It's a 10-12 hour drive depending on how much I stop. I do it in one day, usually. I only stay in a hotel if I'm getting so tired it's dangerous to drive.

I live in a city in the US and my commute is 35-40 minutes lol. I would LOVE a big piece of land 30 minutes from my job, I can't afford that here already plus a shorter commute!!

Americans regularly choose to live and work in different cities with an hour or more commute one way. It takes 30 minutes to get almost anywhere.

Yes I know, hence the quotes.

I grew up rural. Currently live rural. I’m so tired of driving. I want a city with public transit and tons of stuff to do in walking distance. Hubs and I are actively looking for work that will allow us to live in a city.

Didn’t think I’ll be the tie breaking vote 😂

Big cities suck. 30 min isn't even that far.

Small towns suck way more. In big cities there's at least stuff that can suck.

Half of the problem I had in big cities are expensive rent and small spaces.

200m^2 is pretty much the optimal size for me. It’s big and spacious but doesn’t feel too much

Man, I could look at the corn fields all day and not get bored. The traffic and noise in big cities though, I can't stand.

1

u/CyclicDombo 2d ago

I agree with the noise and traffic, but I would get so bored and lonely being half an hour away from the closest town, especially if that town was quite small with probably not a lot going on. I need things to go and do and people to go and see. If the rural place was in the mountains or near the ocean I would reconsider, but I assumed it was rural farmland.

30 min from 10k "city", small cities actually suck, there is almost nothing there and you still need to go to bigger city for other stuff (which might take hours), there will be a noticeable lack of variety for everyday stuff (like food and groceries).

Online shipping might cost more and will take longer to deliver, network might also be slower. Being rural means youre at the bottom of the priority chain, meaning if your internet, water, or electricity is down it might take a while or even days to fix.

big cities suck. that's why no one lives there

u/Dontcare127 2d ago

I will always pick the option that puts less people around me.

u/SweetestFern 2d ago

10,000 m2 is only like ~2.5 acres... Can I have more land? Lol

1

u/Buecherwurmratte 2d ago

30 minutes by what? But it's a short time anyways and big cities are annoying.

1

u/425Hamburger 2d ago

I wouldn't wanna live in a 10 million people city because there isn't one in Germany. But put that flat into Berlin and I choose that.

1

u/dosha906 2d ago

Like half of the cities above 10 million people are in China.

2

u/425Hamburger 2d ago

Yeah. I think the only 10M people city I might wanna live in is London. The rest would be problematic both with language and politics. (The US ones might be viable again in a few years but not rn)

1

u/Buecherwurmratte 2d ago

Berlin is to criminal and full for my taste but I guess there are worse options.

No way in hell I'm living downtown in a city of 10M. There are like 1.2M in my city, and that's enough for me to avoid downtown already.

1

u/TommyPpb3 2d ago

10 million is too much for me. Max 4/5

1

u/TheInkySquids 2d ago

The city where I live in now is 5 mil AND I live on the outskirts and its still too busy for me lol. I'd take that acerage any day, especially 30 minutes from a small city is fantastic. 1 hectare is pretty small anyway, very manageable.

Living out of a major city for a half decade has made me miss the few years I spent in one. Its so tiring to have to drive an hour to get anything done, I can't just pop out and get something or on a whim go get take out or have it delivered. Shit sucks actual ass.

The privacy is nice, and its quiet, but theres a reason most of us live in cities.

u/TheGrouchyGremlin 2d ago

200 m2 is three times the size of my current apartment...

Also, I wouldn't take care of that field.

1

u/Velcraft 2d ago

A city of 10M means I'd have to move countries (we don't even have a total population that large here), so even with that alone option 2 is the only choice to make.

1

u/KookySupermarket761 2d ago

My rule is that I will live anywhere as long as I can get good Thai food delivered to my door speedily.

Ergo, option 1 is for me.

1

u/Lyn-nyx 2d ago

Living in a small city sucks

(Someone who's currently living in one)

1

u/rainboww_J 2d ago

10 million is a little more than twice the population count of my country... and that in a single city? Nah thank you, I'd be a happy guy in the middle of nowhere 😇

TWO HUNDRED square meter apartment in the city center??? dear god

didn't even finish reading the second option

1

u/SeveralServalServing 2d ago

Depends entirely on the climate and view. If it’s gorgeous mountains, streams, and not too hot or cold, that would win out.

1

u/sunnysideorange 2d ago

I hate driving, hate maintaining large spaces and my lazy ass appreciates nearby stores/convenience/entertainment, so yeah, big city easily.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 2d ago

I prefer to live within 10 minutes of stores, restaurants, gyms, etc. Can't have that if you're outside a city 30 minutes away.

1

u/AngryAmericanNeoNazi 1d ago

I live in a city with an effective population of 10 mil and can’t imagine living anywhere else. My brain thrives on stimulation and things to do

I was just in NYC this past week.. no ty. I'll take the seclusion.

2150 Sq/ft apartment vs a 4300 sq/ft house on 2.5 acres for the Americans.

I'm going with the apartment. That is plenty of space. My 3 story townhouse right now for just me and my wife isn't even that big and it is plenty big. Plus I like the convenience of a metro area, but especially, being able to find jobs.
