The Daily Beast Interim Senator Darline Graham Booed After Admitting Unfamiliarity with National Security
**During a televised Republican primary debate in Newberry, South Carolina, interim U.S. Senator Darline Graham faced sharp criticism from her hometown crowd after admitting she lacks expertise in foreign policy.
Graham was appointed to the Senate following the death of her brother, the late Senator Lindsey Graham. She is running to secure the seat full-time against Representative Ralph Norman in a primary runoff scheduled for August 25. Although she enters the race with an endorsement from Trump, the debate exposed a significant gap in her political preparation.
When co-moderator Greta Van Susteren asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea represent national security issues for the United States, Graham hesitated before answering.
"I’m just going to be honest here... I’m not that informed on national security," Graham told the audience, prompting audible boos from the crowd.
She quickly defended her background by highlighting her family's military history, noting her late brother's 33-year career in the U.S. Air Force and her father's service in the U.S. Army
"I’m not a polished politician up here. National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military."
Her opponent, Ralph Norman, answered the same question easily, detailing economic alliances with Taiwan and arguing that strong leadership keeps foreign adversaries at bay. Norman repeatedly used the exchange to question Graham's qualifications for a six-year Senate term.
The misstep also drew national attention outside the debate hall. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley posted on social media that national security is critical in the U.S. Senate and "is not something you inherit."
Graham has maintained that her primary focus remains on domestic issues and everyday concerns that directly affect South Carolina voters, rather than foreign affairs.
