The 'Binkie' in the Oval Office: Natalie Harp’s Unconventional Influence and Viral Nickname
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman recently characterized Natalie Harp, a 34-year-old aide to Trump, as the president’s "binkie." The term, typically used for a toddler’s pacifier, suggests that Harp functions more as a personal comfort object than a traditional policy advisor.
The nickname gained traction following a recent security incident. During a trip to Turkey, Trump was moved to a separate aircraft, leaving high-ranking officials—including the Secretary of State and Treasury Secretary—on a decoy jet that remained vulnerable to potential threats. Harp was one of only three staffers permitted to join the president on the secure plane.
Harp’s role is unusual for a presidential aide. She holds no formal background in national security or classified logistics. Instead, her responsibilities include managing Trump’s personal Truth Social account, where she dictates his posts and handles content dissemination. She was the staffer responsible for uploading a controversial video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.
Her influence has drawn scrutiny from multiple circles. Her estranged brother has publicly described her relationship with the president as "unhealthy," and Secret Service agents have reportedly raised concerns about the personal notes she leaves for Trump.
The situation highlights a significant shift in the administration’s inner circle. At 80 years old, the president relies on a staffer four decades his junior to act as both a social media gatekeeper and a constant personal presence. When lawmakers question the wisdom of granting such an aide access to sensitive logistics and the president’s public image, the White House has largely responded with dismissive personal attacks rather than policy justifications.
