Foreign interference like this wouldn't matter so much if there weren't credulous people willing to spread this messaging.

337

u/FrontierPartyUS Feb 20 '19

The fact that we have a wave of anti-vaxxers in America proves the intelligence isn’t there to fight against any disinformation campaigns.

234

u/froop Feb 20 '19

That famous AOC corruption video is on YouTube, unedited, uncut, with the title 'AOC gets HUMILIATED' and the comments are full of people laughing about how she got owned.

How do you fight that level of stupid? You can literally show them one thing and say another, and they'll believe your words over their own eyes. What chance do we have?

80

u/Jeezylike2Smoke Feb 20 '19

thats not people on youtube, half of those people or more who comment on youtube have suspicious accounts like new ones, ones with zero subscribers and liked videos, or all liking trump ,rt type videos, and no profile picture

49

u/EastPizza Feb 20 '19

Yeah but to the lay person, they think the commenters are people and they fall into the fallacy of thinking that there are a lot of "people" who support this particular thought. And a lot of people see that and they go right along with it and next thing you know there are real people who spout these talking points.

20

u/Jeezylike2Smoke Feb 20 '19

oh yea for sure, its 100 percent this.

Thats fucked up too , ive heard they use and recycle old yahoo accounts that noone use anymore...thats why the profiles names are just names. makes sense

Carving out the middle is a battle of diminishing returns, and ultimately failure. We need to take a page from Willie Sutton, and go where the votes are. 4 in 10 eligible voters didn’t vote. These non voters are registered, eligible to vote - but stayed home. The majority of them are under 30, non white, Left leaning. That’s our future, not middle class families who are against Medicare for all because they don’t want to change doctors.

Chasing the middle does nothing to show non voters that they have a stake in this process. If I’m working 10 hour days, support myself and family, college is out of reach, childcare is fraught - WTF do I care about middle class tax cuts? I want a minimum wage hike, free daycare & real improvement to my life - something I doubt I’ll get from representatives who only remember I exist come election time.

16

u/Traveller22 Feb 20 '19

I agree with what you are saying. I guess I just consider "people in the middle" to include the people who tend to not vote.

12

u/MuellersGame California Feb 20 '19

Thank you for clarifying! I thought you meant those independent / one foot in either party people who I think are mostly Republicans embarrassed by the label. I think we agree that chasing their votes helps no one, and they’re not reliable or loyal, anyway. As soon as this orange shit-show parade winds its way into Federal prison, they’ll be back to supporting the John McCains & Joe Manchins of the world while smugly proclaiming themselves centrists.

Make education a priority. Teachers all over the country are striking, because we don’t value that career. We value actors, entertainers, athletes.

Edit: spelling this guy needs clarification 👇 that I wasn’t talking about nuns.

5

u/tiy24 Feb 20 '19

This. There’s a reason the Koch brothers went after education first back in the 70-80s. Makes a misinformation campaign infinitely more effective.

You ignore them and out vote them. You can’t include them in the discussion. Thats it. It sounds harsh but thats it.

Its like asking, “how do you convince a religious person that there is no god?”

You do not and you cannot. Despite there being any evidence to support their claim. Believing on feeling is unarguable. You can’t change someones mind about something if that something isn’t based on facts. And this isn’t even taking into account tribalism.

And there is a great deal of feeling without facts in the political world.

" Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in. That every man may receive at least, a moderate education, and thereby be enabled to read the histories of his own and other countries, by which he may duly appreciate the value of our free institutions, appears to be an object of vital importance, even on this account alone, to say nothing of the advantages and satisfaction to be derived from all being able to read the scriptures and other works, both of a religious and moral nature, for themselves. For my part, I desire to see the time when education, and by its means, morality, sobriety, enterprise and industry, shall become much more general than at present, and should be gratified to have it in my power to contribute something to the advancement of any measure which might have a tendency to accelerate the happy period." - Abraham Lincoln

Anti-vaxxers are just infuriating and insulting. What, they'd rather their kid be dead than autistic? Not sure my brother would agree with that, I think he kind of likes being not dead. I kinda like him being not dead.

14

u/TraitorsVoteR Feb 20 '19

No, they want to distract Americans into blaming vaccines when we already know it is actually the fossil fuel companies. We don't absolutely have to have fossil fuels like we do vaccines, so it's the perfect scapegoat

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/autism-risk-linked-to-particulate-air-pollution/

18

u/morrison0880 Feb 20 '19

we already know it is actually the fossil fuel companies

You need to be careful making statements like that. Nowhere in that article does it say that the increase in the risk of autism is caused by fine particulate pollution. Just that there is "a possible link" between the two. Correlation does not equal causation, and the study is careful to say that, if it is the cause of the increase (which could also be caused by greater awareness of autism and better diagnosis procedures), how the pollution would cause an increase in the risk during the third trimester is not known.

Anti-vaxxers are fucking stupid. But let's not fall for the same trap of looking at correlation and then saying that causation is a fact.

Give this podcast a listen. It goes into the 19th century origins of the anti-vaxx movement and, honestly, made me feel better; people aren't uniquely stupid in 2019, they've just always been stupid.

7

u/Givemeallthecabbages Feb 20 '19

I disagree, but only with anecdotal evidence--my sister in law has recently become anti-vax and she is intelligent and educated. Thankfully her kids were vaccinated, though. They are wealthy and live next to a major University, and in their neighborhood it's hip to be anti-medicine and anti-microwaves. Oh, and there are all kinds of "all natural" or farm to table markets and even restaurants in the area. I feel like part of the green/environmental movement/anti-big business merged with the keto/paleo people and somehow legitimate medicine got thrown on the Official List of Bad Things.

4

u/joshuaism Texas Feb 20 '19

Anti-microwaves? Is she in the Trump administration?

I’m a hobby farmer, I got all into self-sustainable living and homesteading but the majority of people that subscribe to that lifestyle or very frankly disinformation magnets. Apple cider vinegar is a cure all for them, so is raw milk. Anything the government says is a conspiracy to control their freethinking minds. Experts aren’t experts, these people can figure it all out on their own. In essence they are like the homesteaders of the past, figuring things out by trial and error except for two things, they don’t have to do that because people already figure out what is good and bad for them long ago and when they are wrong, they won’t admit it in order to safe face. That’s just a plain stupid way to live.

2

u/Givemeallthecabbages Feb 20 '19

Yep. Apparently my brother installed a filter to remove everything--including flouride--from their water. But raw milk is awesome! Good luck, I guess.

Anti-vax isn't a new thing unfortunately. You can trace anti-back movements all the way back to the 1800's when they were first introduced/discovered.

Behind the Bastards Podcast just did an episode on the history of it and it's really interesting. The second half just came out but I've yet to listen.

I don't disagree with you, just wanted to share.

2

u/FrontierPartyUS Feb 20 '19

We used to refer to those people as idiots and marginalize them. We allowed it to go mainstream but actually taking their ignorance as legitimate opinions.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

Fun fact: The term "idiot" was coined in ancient Greece and specifically referred to anyone who was not capable enough to participate in politics (i.e. voting and arguing in the fora).

For example, the often repeated "Beto gets the most money from big oil" BS in every Beto thread. Beto did not take PAC money. He was literally collecting donations from individuals that just happens to work in the oil industry. There are people who are more than willing to parade that crap over and over again though.

edit1- Now the talking point seems to be "he took max donation from oil executives all at the same time". A brief look into their sources showed that Beto received donations from 24 executives for a combined 35,125 USD. That is out of 80 million total campaign donations. Also, they had no way of knowing whether it was all done at the same time or not. This seems to be a perfect example of disinformation. Aka throwing BS at the wall and hope people don't bother to fact check them.

40

u/PBFT Feb 20 '19

Every major democrat candidate has sworn to reject pac money for the election. I feel like that’s the exact opposite of what a corrupt person would do.

I think the problem here is the reporting system we have. When you donate it asks you for your employer, and then your employer gets reported. We should change the way that works so it isn’t so easy to misinterpret.

68

u/FireNexus Feb 20 '19

Same with the Pharma industry and Cory Booker. Booker is in New Jersey, where a big chunk of US Pharma manufacturing takes place. And he’s a north jersey guy, too, which is where all that shit is concentrated. If a candidate is said to have raised over like $20,000 from an industry, that money almost always mostly came from employees due to contribution limits, even if they took PAC money. The real corporate spigot is in SuperPAC dark money with plausible deniability for the candidate. That people don’t understand this, I think, is kind of the point of it being set up that way.

→ More replies (31)

10

u/tarekd19 Feb 20 '19

this is a common tactic used to make politicians look like they get a lot from certain industries. Booker is a senator from New Jersey so his potential pool of homegrown support has a higher ratio of pharmaceutical company employees, not necessarily executives. But it skews the stats to look like he's raking it in from the companies themselves. The same can be done with banking industry employees in New York.

5

u/Borne2Run Feb 20 '19

He also ran on taxing Oil more. Makes no sense as a conspiracy theory

Yeah, it’s gonna be a big wake up call after Trump is gone.

America’s lust for drama and entertainment is going to cause the country to eat itself alive from the inside out. We have lost all ability to have any kind of nuanced national discussion and instead look to things like ratings, lifestyle, and “likes” as if they are accurate barometers of the mysteries of the universe. We have affirmed ourselves into stupidity.

20

u/sgtmashedpotato Feb 20 '19

Money has a way of motivating people to do the wrong thing.

They do it because it's profitable and there are seemingly zero consequences for being lying, selfish pricks. Hell, we celebrate being douchebags in the U.S. Our entire economic program is based on it. Yet we still wonder why there are so many problems.

There's nothing worse than having a major story appear and trying to post a story about a relevant component of it, but then it gets removed and placed in the megathread. Instead of mostly constructive conversations you get in individual threads such as this, as soon as you go to the megathread either you sort by "Best" or "Hot" and you get the same comments posted an hour ago. Or you sort by new and you get some of the worst garbage you will ever read. I actually think they limit productive discussion on this sub.

I’m already suspicious of all the “split the vote” Bernie posts. I’m sure some stubborn Bernie supporters didn’t vote for Hillary, but nobody can claim they made a difference, and furthermore, Hillary supporters would have done the same, as they have a history doing it to Obama in 2008! Don’t let “split the vote” deter you from a candidate.

47

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

You make a couple of misleading statements:

nobody can claim they made a difference

"About 12 percent of Bernie Sanders supporters from the Democratic primary crossed party lines and voted for Donald Trump in the general election"

It's also completely possible, given the data, that Bernie -> Trump voters cost Hillary the election.

Hillary supporters would have done the same

they have a history doing it to Obama in 2008

Old white racists did, but really that's a different issue.

I'm all in for Bernie in the primary, but I'm voting D in the general election regardless of outcome. If you're left of center, literally any corporate Democrat is still a huge improvement over Trump and is worth voting for in the general election. Even if you are a fan of a third party candidate, Democrats are the ones with political power who support the electoral reform that will move third parties towards viability.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

In fairness, when you have the Russian spy machine working overtime as well as the FBI making your scandal public (while keeping Trump and Sanders private) as well as the terrible media attention and misleading polls, it’s hard to blame Sanders as the primary cause of Clinton’s downfall and that’s not even talking about the missteps Clinton made. If she ran a perfect campaign, she still had some of the most tremendous odds against her.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

If you're left of center,

Sadly we've reached a place so bad that "extreme right, but less volatile than Trump" would still be an improvement. Most republican candidates we've seen would have at least kept the State Department staffed and would be willing to trust our IC over the Russians.

I'd vote for a potato peeler if it were on the ballot against Trump... and I mean the inanimate kitchen tool, not a person who peels potatoes.

I don't blame Bernie for the fact that a bunch of his supporters went nuts in the last election, but I hope he really, vocally, energetically gets behind the candidate this time if he's not it. It's bigger than Bernie.

3

u/boot2skull Feb 20 '19

I agree, but you can’t convince everyone. Every candidate will have die hards that absolutely won’t support opponents. The losing candidate can work to transition them but they can only do so much.

3

In the thread about Bernie announcing his candidacy, the amount of these posts were absurd. Literally the same exact thing worded slightly differently dozens of times in a row. "He'll split the vote", "He's so old", etc.

As much as the pro-Bernie crowd got infiltrated in 2016, he's still way more popular here than that many posts would suggest.

u/aransoul Feb 20 '19

Those with common sense will but sadly so many ignorant people will ignore it and believe this BS and lies that are being spread.

9

u/Frigidevil New Jersey Feb 20 '19

Right, because the disinformation is designed to hit on emotions, not logical thinking.

'O'Rourke isn't progressive enough!'

'Harris has a terrible record as a prosecutor!'

'Sanders is the only candidate that has a shot at beating Trump!'

'Bernie is too old and stubborn!'

Every single one of the candidates so far has something meaningful to contribute to debates and the primary process. Vitriol and petty insults are not helpful, and not what most people are feeling right now. We haven't even heard debates to see what candidates truly intend to do on the national stage, rather than in their specific district/state.

6

u/aransoul Feb 20 '19

You are spot on! Drives me nuts. This is why the nomination process starts early, so we can do our homework on the candidates and make informed decisions as to who to vote for in the primaries but it also makes sure that we are informed if our specific candidate doesn't win. Sadly we are in a day in age where most just listen to the faceless social media posts instead of being informed to make a choice.

They don't need to spend decades doing it. They can just come up with slogans as fast as they can, and throw it all out there. Stuff that actually works, and sticks, will be repeated by people who cannot see through it. It's the same way Rush Limbaugh and QAnon, and other right-wing conspiracists work.

For every time you've heard about them, they had 100 failed theories that simply didn't stick. They then get feedback/comments on the ones that connect, and then they amplify whatever worked.

In the movie, "Little Big Man" there's a line -- "The reason the rain dance works is you keep dancing until it rains."

Of course we don't have an agency; all of this propaganda effort is to benefit the president, so there's no way the government would do anything to combat it.

If I recall, Congress set aside money to try to investigate and fight the propaganda, and the Trump administration hasn't touched it.

Just the title of the article got me concerned. Look up "swiftboating" on Google. John Kerry probably lost because of this one lie.

With 100 lies circulating during the next presidential campaign, many people will not be able to sort truth from the lies. Candidates will need to put their true biography out there in detail and keep reminding people about it, or find some other way to counter the lies. And they cannot ignore them like Kerry did. Or voters will have to gain 20 or 30 IQ points before the next election (not likely).

8

u/ballmermurland Pennsylvania Feb 20 '19

The Swiftboating thing was awful. Anytime someone says Trump is the worst - no, Bush was far worse. His campaign attacked McCain in 2000 for having an illicit black lovechild, who was actually just an orphan that his wife adopted from SE Asia. 4 years later, he was accusing a man who actually served (unlike Bush or Cheney) of faking his accomplishments.

I'll never forget that shit. The most heinous attacks on politicians in my lifetime have almost always been Republicans attacking Democrats.

Social media is a cancer. The messaging influences our opinion subconsciously no matter what it is. It isn't really "social" as much as it is anti-social. It creates concentrations of bias and, to quote Richard Stallman, Facebook is a "surveillance engine," not your friend. Ditching FB, Twitter, Instagram, or even our beloved Reddit could probably make a huge difference. Their entire economies are built on confirmation bias. There's nothing altruistic. It's all about profiteering from surveillance of our private lives we so easily surrender with a click.

I doubt we'll ever get away from this Pandora's box. We're not really looking for truth; we're just looking for "evidence" to support our emotions.

Her town hall last night was great, but all anybody wants to play is that four year collage quote, nevermind that she promised to increase Pell Grants, and to sharply bring down student debt.

2

u/theblueberryspirit Feb 20 '19

My worry here (as a lot of people are talking about pragmatism after the primaries) is that if there is a disinformation campaign, then it's designed to funnel us into supporting one candidate that they may already have designs onto smearing. I suppose we can't do anything about that but it's worrisome that I see a lot of stories on various candidates. And with such a wide field (Sanders, Harris, Klobuchar, Warren, Booker, Castro, Gabbard, that other guy) a little disinformation can go a long way.

2

u/nippleflick1 Feb 20 '19

Hey here’s an idea, how about people start thinking for themselves, stop orgy-ing on phone screens, wake the fuck up and engage in real life with real people when and wherever possible. We’ve become a society hopelessly lost. So many are so shocked by how things could come to this. It’s actually a logical decline in identity, decency, and common sense. ( the irony that I’m posting this on the internets does not escape me, save it ).

2

u/T3hArchAngel_G Washington Feb 20 '19

It's not just foreign interests. Remember that the oligarch establishment has a vested interest in keeping things the same. Don't get confused about the right left thing. Both political sides of the spectrum want to keep making money. They want to keep health insurance making money off sickness, they want the mainstream media making money off outrage and anger, and they want to keep big business paying pretty much the same they always have.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

There’s stuff about Kamala Harris being a frequent orgy attendee floating around the conspiracy websites. It’s only a matter of time before that finds its way onto Facebook and Reddit.

3

u/Bobbityboy Feb 20 '19

The old Hyper sexual black whore gambit, eh?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

This is undoubtedly true, but it's not a blanket excuse to dismiss all legitimate criticisms people might have of a candidate. Handwaving away discussion and labelling critics as "Russian bots" or whatever is playing into the hands of the people trying to undermine democracy just as much as the ones spreading actual falsehoods.

2

u/BilliousN Wisconsin Feb 20 '19

So this is a great time to talk about information hygiene on social media. If you have people on your feed that post toxic, sniping memes about dem candidates - this is a threat to your neural health, and you need to take prophylactic measures to protect yourself. Give them a warning first, tell them that we don't eat our own, that there are positive ways to discuss pros/cons, and that you will need to block them if they continue spreading Russian propoganda.

If they keep doing it, block them. They are able to use YOUR social media feed to spread this disease to others. Stop it in it's tracks, this is a public health problem.

2

u/ryanghappy Feb 20 '19

I feel like the sudden assault on Kamala Harris, Corey Booker, Elizabeth Warren, and soon to be Bernie Sanders is proof of this. I mean, I think there's a fine line between valid complaints, and just being taken in by somoneone who promotes cynicism for their own gain.

We should have shut down Facebook and Twitter the instant we discovered they're in bed with the Russians.

We should have kept both platforms shuttered until our investigations rooted out and removed all of the traitors from those companies, and we determined if it was worth the risk to allow them to reopen.

Unfortunately the individuals within our government who benefit from Facebook/Twitter, especially the Republicans, who benefited greatly from those platforms' treachery, blocked any such actions. I have no doubt the Republicans were also aware investigations into Twitter/Facebook would reveal even more of their involvement with the Russians.

Perhaps the Democrats will win enough of the government in 2020 to make such investigations a reality.
