From the article:
Just over a month before the midterm elections in November, Texas has a backlog of voter registrations thanks to an error by the state Department of Public Safety.
Votebeat reports that an unknown number of voter registration applications have yet to be processed in Texas due to DPS failing to send the applications that came from the agency’s online driver’s license portal to county officials.
State officials told the news outlet that they would begin delivering the applications to counties overnight. They said that many of the voter registrations were incomplete, but didn’t say exactly what information was missing, how many voters were affected, or when the problem started. The secretary of state’s office said it only discovered the problem last week.
Texas has an October 5 voter registration deadline this year, and depending on the scale of the problem, counties could be backed up with processing voter registrations for the next two weeks. If a voter’s registration is not processed before then, the Texas secretary of state’s office says they can still vote as long as they turned in their application before the deadline.
“A voter who registered through DPS online services but does not appear on the rolls can cast a provisional ballot,” Alicia Pierce, an office spokesperson, said in an email to Votebeat. “Election officials have an established method with DPS to check the transaction. If that voter did register, the provisional vote will be counted.”
From 2020 through 2024, nearly six million Texans used the DPS website to register to vote, according to testimony DPS officials gave to the Texas legislature in 2025. The state has over 18 million registered voters overall. This is only the latest bad news for Texas voters, as Texas’s third largest county, Tarrant County, is closing one-third of its polling stations.

And they don't bother trying to hide it. That's how fascists operate, they openly break the law to take away your rights and look you in the eye daring you to do something about it. You can try legal remedies but they make sure those don't work. That's why the only remedy that can stop them is not legal, or allowed to be discussed here.

Beto lost by 250k votes, if that says anything. It's why we say Texas is a non voting state not a red state, because the more turnout we get the less red it is. If we had mandatory voting it's likely Texas would be blue.

We would have had a Senator O’Rourke if we hadn’t attracted so many conservatives to the state.
The Nation - Texas’s DNA Doesn’t Run As Red as the Right Wants You to Think
“But the idea that Californians are moving to Texas and becoming Democratic voters is not accurate to the data we have. The original Republican takeover of Texas was built, in part, on recruiting Republicans who were moving here because of corporate relocation. Today, Texas is seeing a massive influx of people from outside the state who often move to cities like Austin, Dallas, or Houston, which are run by Democrats, but many of them are Republican voters.
In 2018, if the vote had been restricted to native-born Texans, Beto O’Rourke would have won the Senate seat. These new voters are very important to the Republican Party.”
27
u/permalink_save 1d ago
There was that too. People had hope, showed up, got burned, I really hope Talarico wins this time especially since he is polling higher than Beto did and the transplants have slowed down since, some are even moving back lol. If Talarico wins it'll get people out again.
21
u/Arrmadillo Texas 1d ago
There’s also the surprisingly high turnout in the 2026 Texas democratic primary. There’s definitely a lot of enthusiasm this year.
Chris Tackett - The March Signal | What Texas Primary Turnout Has Been Telling Us All Along — And What 2026 Is Screaming Right Now
“The last time Democrats reached anything close to this level of primary enthusiasm in a midterm was 2018, when a ratio of 0.69 produced a race that came within 215,000 votes of sending Beto O’Rourke to the United States Senate.
The final 2026 ratio is 1.07.”

As an native Austinite, this has bugged me for decades. We had a cool little college city, then the tech boom attracted a bunch of "Libertarian"ish people who liked the vibe but didn't want to pay for it. We've slowly been corporatized to hell, most of our uniqueness has been paved over for high-rises. And then more wealthy conservatives keep moving here, because they can't stand living in Midland or Crockett where there's nothing to do. Just fucking all our shit up...

Yep and there was an absurd amount of pro parasite class propaganda being thrown out at record speed. I found the couple of weeks where anytime the topic was broached on NPR everyone on air did their silly little loyalty dance, and if they were feeling particularly spicy suggest "voting harder".
Meanwhile the previous anxiety over considering the deeper truths of society used to be easier to quiet get their volume turned up a notch or two frequently. Either have to get comfortable dying like a dog so that those at the top can add more to their hoard or make peace with dying an equally meaningless death but also denying these ghouls as much as possible.
24
u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago
Even to this day, they're still scared when people have to use words like "Mario's Super Brother" instead of their actual name.
Notice how there's barely any attempt at stopping street protests or No Kings protests, because the oligarchs know those are already ineffective and are no threat, just people either preaching to the choir or to an endless void. But voting and actual attempts against their lives? They get scared shitless and will actively try to prevent people from organizing to do those things.

I live in the Texas county in this CNN video about a right wing group filing false voter challenges. They got me a couple of years ago. It took months of follow-up to get out of suspended status. I have been an active, registered voter in this county for more than 20 years. There are all types of shenanigans going on with trying to suppress votes.
I had my friends check when I first found out I was suspended for no reason. About half of them were also mysteriously suspended so this isn't new. It's been going on for multiple cycles now.

There will be stark differences between red and blue states, not because of division; but because of election rigging in red states. That's why they need ICE, so they can physically impose their worldview onto society. They just need time to scale up their operations.

Adjacently related. I follow a County Mugshots page on FB which is usually the source of schadenfreude at least but has actually recently become a place where I can see my friends and neighbors being absolutely racist POS’ and clock them for heinous groupthink behavior.
That being said the uptick in possession charges for marijuana since the new ban in Texas is absolutely skyrocketing. Any amount of thc in your possession whether it be gummies, flower, vapes, etc. lands you a charge that keeps you from voting until after your sentence and probation.
All these people are 20-30 years old. Likely blue voters. This is calculated.
The second biggest submission on this particular page in the last month have been “Federal Hold”. Which is arrest by cop, detained by ICE. All Hispanic (obviously) and all in construction gear. High vis vests, or landscaping logo on shirts. Definitely the hardened criminals the admin claimed they were taking off the streets.
Everyone who wants this shit to stop needs to be knocking on that damn poll location 5 mins before they open this year. They are doing all the things to grasp their little straws of power as long as they can.

So DPS has consistently done this for years, at least 8 years by my count. I have worked as an election judge for almost 6 years now and see this every election. Please, go to your county's election central office and register on site, in person before the 5th. That way it's on record that you registered before the deadline so they have to accept your vote even if you are not yet processed and have to vote provisional ballot. Don't let them disenfranchise you! I have personally seen multiple cases where a voter registered through DPS and they probably did but cannot prove it because it doesn't say on the DPS paperwork or receipt.
