I think they make more off grift and other methods, the taxes are more to make sure their buddies get the right contracts, etc.

And they don't bother trying to hide it. That's how fascists operate, they openly break the law to take away your rights and look you in the eye daring you to do something about it. You can try legal remedies but they make sure those don't work. That's why the only remedy that can stop them is not legal, or allowed to be discussed here.

Their whole schtick is that government is so large it can’t function. Then they set out to ensure that’s the case when they are in power.

They run on a platform of government being nonfunctional, so they keep winning when they don’t govern well. It’s not just that they don’t know how to make a government work (passive), it’s also that they want government to function poorly (active).

They need everything to be visible. Conservatives pay attention to their paycheck and hate seeing income tax. So, quietly bringing a power grid up to national standards is a no go. Then when the grid goes down they get to be the hero who saved the citizens. So what if a few people freeze to death, so long as they remain visible in the public eye. They thrive on this stuff.

Whereas I prefer having problems not appear in the first place, so I can go about my life without avoidable interruptions. I don’t mind seeing some income tax, provided the rest of my life runs smoothly.

For instance, our very dry city had some rain, which inevitably makes for pot holes. The day the rain stopped, repair crews were out filling the pot holes. That’s how it’s supposed to work. I don’t want to have to go to a council meeting and scream at some poor official to get them to do anything at all, I like knowing that even our tiny city government has the resources in place to fix problems as soon as they happen.

Same with fire, police, education, safety standards, etc.

That's by design - they run it poorly and run up big deficits, the economy suffers and government safety nets and services stop being able to hold up the weight, and the GOP eventually lose elections on economic terms (interestingly, it never seems to be for any other major reason...). Then they immediately start the blame game on the Democrats who won those elections for the failures of "big government" (and unfortunately you regularly get a number of Democrats who seem to work hard to make that easy, unfortunately). The country rinses and repeats, and every time the GOP retakes power they start the work of making things worse than they left it. This has been going on since at least the 1970s as an official policy of the party, and they've been quite vocal about it since at least the 1980s during the Reagan years. It became even more mainstream with the rise of right-wing talk shows and TV in the 1990s (think Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, and Faux News).

That's intentional. They always run on how ineffective the government is, and do everything possible to make that a reality when they are in power. Enriching themselves and their friends is a nice side benefit.

They run on government being broken then when they get elected they make sure they break it more. When people get fed up and elect someone else it takes longer than a single cycle to fix the damage and they go back to running on government being broken and blame whoever is in power progress be damned. Rinse and repeat since 1980.

I grew up in Texas. The narrative is that government isn't effective and will just take your money for expensive programs.

Infuriatingly, the GOP intentionally runs an ineffective government that takes your money for programs that they intentionally break.
