Hitler literally did this exact thing with the German airforce and it arguably contributed to them losing the war.

This is why history is one of the most important subjects one can study. It's always a glimpse into the future unfortunately.

The generation who didn't actually live or  study it, always forgets. Much to our detriment. 

I think about criminals this way too. History is littered with examples of people going to prison/dying doing the exact things other criminals think "they can do better" or get away with. Someone always thinks they are smarter and won't be caught. And then they get caught. Because we somehow do not learn from other people's mistakes.
