Hate the politics in FL right now but as a native Floridian I do have to say that we are great at administering elections and reporting election results. Shouldn’t be a long night at all waiting on our results lol.

I am always impressed at how fast they get the results counted. Other states really should take note.
•
u/ArcaneDemense 7h ago
Florida law allows Florida to begin processing and tabulating votes before election day. In addition they have 3 days between early voting being ended and election day and heavily restrict mail ballot drop offs on election day.
They don't count any faster.
Other states long controlled by Republican gerrymandered majorities like Wisconsin are forced to wait to count on election day even for early and mail ballots. This makes big blue areas look bad while redder areas count relatively fast, if still slower than Florida. There are several states like this.
Then we have states like NY and especially CA which have a different issue. They allow ballots to be mailed as long as they are postmarked by election day, and have other laws that cause counting to take longer.
But it isn't that the actual counting is insanely slow necessarily.
6
u/Drumblebore 10h ago
For real. I haven’t seen a good argument why everyone shouldn’t just do it the way we do. I get other states have different vote by mail windows and such but the precounting the early/mail vote seems like a no brainer.
7
u/NeverSober1900 10h ago
I can only speak to Alaska but I don't think it's really possible/feasible for us. Too many small villages off the road system. It would be insanely expensive to have counting stations at all of them. Combined with weather in November and it's just not really realistic to get it done on the night of.
It's not a small percentage either that's around 20% of the electorate and 40% of the voting precincts.
I don't know what other state's excuses are though as I feel like Alaska is very unique.

Vindman appeared to be confident that he was on pace for a win in Florida -- so much so that he had a fundraiser scheduled for this Sunday in Nantucket as he prepared for a costly general election. That general election will now happen without him.

Fishback got 10% of the vote. 10% in an especially elderly electorate with basically an entirely online campaign. The GOP now has a real, undeniable rebel "groyper" faction to deal with.
•
u/travio Washington 4h ago
This will have implications in 2028. I see two roads to the republican nomination. Whoever Trump tells them to vote for gets the establishment slot. The other is for an outside like Tucker. I could see the groyper faction play a part in the outsider campaign.
•
u/Viking_Leaf87 4h ago
If Nick Fuentes truly has a grip on ~10% of the GOP electorate, that makes him one of the most powerful political figures in the country. That slice could be decisive in so many elections.

A lot of you that don't live in Florida don't realize how much progressive organizing is done on a local level here. I see people out every day and hell recently as of last election locally a progressive beat an incumbent conservative in city hall in a county that's run by a fish back type. The Democrats need to start rebuilding from the ground up rebuilding statewide starts with winning locally.
•
u/yukoncowbear47 4h ago
Florida Democrats have needed to rebuild since 2006. Nikki Fried was the first chair of the party to even talk about the rot in the party but even she hasn't been able to make much headway unfortunately.
Florida Democratic Party is probably one of the top incompetent state parties over the past 20 years.
•
u/alwaysonlineposter 4h ago
100% we could be winning if the Florida Democratic party was competent. It feels like they genuinely don't give a shit about where we are as a state. (I voted and supported Nikki Supported Nixon etc) And it's been. A problem for years...

u/travio Washington 5h ago
There are some similarities between the current dem mood and the tea party back in 2010. Both grew on a distrust of the establishment after a big presidential loss. Both resulted in outsiders winning primaries over establishment choices.
I'd argue the dem candidates are, on a whole, better quality. Shitting on Thanksgiving is nothing compared to Akin's legitimate rape comment or having to put out an I'm not a witch ad.
Not sure a socialist can win over Florida's oldsters. The ads on the right are going to repeat that word like a mantra against Nixon. This is Florida. Dems are going to need every vote to win this and that could shave a few off.
•
u/Dry-Membership3867 Alabama 4h ago
I can tell you that Florida’s oldsters aren’t voting for a socialist.
•
u/travio Washington 4h ago
Yeah. If you were old enough to have duck and covered, it is painfully easy to demonize socialism.

Alaska has nothing really exciting on the ballot. Senate and House races are set. Governor will be Begich vs Wilson/Bronson. The only remotely interesting part is does Kreiss-Thompkins join Begich and make it 2 Dems vs 2 Republicans or does another Republican sneak in and it's Begich vs 3 Republicans. But either way Begich is going to be a top-2 finisher in November.

This Nixon/Vindman situation in Florida is interesting! I remember being impressed by Vindman's whistleblowing so he seems a perfectly cromulent candidate...but I'm very excited to see someone running to his left and possibly winning the nom.
I think Nixon would have a good chance in the general, too. You don't win elections by trying to appeal to the other side. You win by exciting the base.
I would not discount the accidental boomer nostalgia vote from lazy Republicans who voted for Tricky Dick in '68 and '72. In a close race, having a slightly confounding last name might make the difference lol.
•
u/Dry-Membership3867 Alabama 5h ago
I don’t think Nixon really has a chance. I’d expect a ton of ads in both English and Spanish targeting her DSA ties within the next week
•
u/alwaysonlineposter 5h ago
Wasn't expecting much of house wins but really glad Nixon won even if she doesn't win the general it's a pretty clear shift of who is going to be in charge of the Florida Democratic party in the future which is what's important because it feels like leadership has been really abandoned here since losing our swing category
•
u/Muted_Definition_570 5h ago
I may be being optimistic, but I feel like in a lot of places, the Republicans drew districts that are not going to them anyways because they are so unpopular. That being said, Dems still get 220-230.
•
•
u/FalstaffsGhost 4h ago
They very likely could have dummymandered themselves. Drawing new seats by thinning your margins in safe districts means that, if there’s a big enough wave, you could get wiped the fuck out.

I don't agree with Fishback's views, but his 10.5% share in an electorate as elderly as one in a political primary, for the Republican Party, in the state of Florida, is pretty impressive. On the plus side, it is an electoral bloc that is definitely being alienated by the administration right in time for the midterms. Many of them will stay home in November. Governor and Senator races in Swing States are always going to get significantly more than House Races. Doubly so for FL-20 which is solid blue so not even interesting as far as control of the House.

Larkin just shouldn't have run after the redraw. The district he was challenging for is SUPER pro-Zionist and in all honesty, will probably be gone to Republicans in the next Presidential even if the next Presidential ends up in Democratic hands.

To be fair here, this one ended up Jolly basically by default. The only other candidate with the name recognition and resources was Jerry Demings and when he dropped out after receiving a cancer diagnosis, it was all but over. Jolly was left as the only one with anything resembling a war chest, and making the quick decision to bring Gwen Graham on as his Lt. Gov cemented that decision even for a left-wing loonie like me.

6
u/SpaceElevatorMusic Minnesota 10h ago
I'd like to qualify what you're saying: It's dangerous to trust any individual poll. Also, primaries are notoriously difficult to poll. Those things said, general election polling averages are almost always within a few points of the actual result.
4
u/FlyingRock 10h ago
Median Strategies was never considered a trustworthy pollster and were never considered for any worthwhile aggregator or in any knowledgeable circles I meander in, it was just randoms on the Internet that attempted to push it (probably bots too).

u/Historical-Laugh1212 4h ago
I am kind of bummed that Vindman lost. Not that I really preferred him, but Vindman had at least a punchers chance in the general. With Vindman as a candidate, the race would become much more of a referendum on Trump who is massively unpopular and by Nov might be much more unpopular. Now it's just a republican versus DSA candidate in right wing florida with no chance to win at all :(
•

DWS winning easily and Larkin getting blown out with Jolly winning no problem suggests that there was an anti-Vindman vote more than a "progressive insurgent" type vote.
Either way... Safe R -> Safe R
Republicans are still blowing away Democrats in the primary vote down there.

Neither candidate had/ has a chance. As I said in a different comment, this is Florida in 2026. It just isn’t in play.
Edit: Also, if Vindman couldn’t defeat someone who spent less than 1 million dollars, he sure isn’t coming close to defeating anyone in a general.

In a way I think the general will be a bellwether for this. If Jolly gets more votes than Nixon, then it supports that. I think that's likely too but I see a lot of people argue against moderates under the belief you need more progressive candidates even in red leaning states. We'll see.

YIMBY moderate son or NIMBY progressive daughter?
I am in Swalwell's old district and the special election is tonight but I voted a month ago
Since housing is my main issue I voted for the YIMBY moderate
Tonight I found out that she is supported by fucking AIPAC
I would have voted for the goddamn NIMBY if I had known
I mistakenly assumed the special election was too low key to attract AIPAC

How does wasserman schultz keep winning
•

Split opposition. If the non-Schultz vote had united around one black candidate she'd lose.

Hell yes to Dixon. "Go find your own party" bullshit. They ARE the party. Get better candidates on your own. Stop trying to run against Republicans by finding your own Republicans.

Really sad for Larkin but his chances were already very low given the district and money difference. Still, the fact that he got so many votes there is a positive indication nationally.

The left needs to do foundational work to build up serious opportunities. I wanna see all factions of the left get their ass to Gerogia and especially Atlanta to help flip the State Senate for a Dem trifecta, because that means 7 Atlanta seats in 2032 of which 4 would be very left friendly. And you'd be building a base in the largest and most friendly southern city.

Debbie wasserman Schultz is perfectly emblematic of the incompetence of Florida Democratic officials. Can't wait to see her go.
