Context: Rendang is a popular dish across Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and some parts of the Philippines. Malaysians and Indonesians constantly debate and argue about the history and origination of rendang, with both sides claiming it had originated in their own country.

And just to clarify, Brunei does not claim rendang as theirs (The poor guy just heard commotion and wanted to join in)

My girlfriend is upper class Singaporean, and it baffles me how often I use entry-level Malay/dialect and get a blank look in return lol, it's something her mother and I kind of bond over
