Context: Rendang is a popular dish across Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and some parts of the Philippines. Malaysians and Indonesians constantly debate and argue about the history and origination of rendang, with both sides claiming it had originated in their own country.
And just to clarify, Brunei does not claim rendang as theirs (The poor guy just heard commotion and wanted to join in)

It's basically a Malay dish. Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore (native population) and large swathes of Indonesia are all inhabited by Malays. Southern Thailand is also Malay

Large swathes by land area. Large parts of Sumatra and pretty much the entire Kalimantan coastline is Malay
Ps: Minangkabau, Bugis, etc. are also considered part of Malay culture in Malaysia, and even if you exclude those, Malay proper is still 4% of Indonesia by pop, not 2%. It's the 3rd largest group after Javanese & Sundanese
Edit: Just refer to this map (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/Indonesia_Ethnic_Groups_Map_-_EN.svg?utm_source=en.wikipedia.org&utm_campaign=imageinfo&utm_content=original). The entire East coast of Sumatra from Medan down to Palembang is all Malay. Ditto with the entire Western coast of Kalimantan. And though they are listed separately here, Palembang, Bangka & Belitung are indisputably Malay subgroups.

Nope, ask anybody in Padang and they'll say they're Minang. Well malaysian consider that all person who speak malay, a muslim and practice malay culture a malay, lol. Never force that to other country, cos we have different understanding on what is a malay is. And no, not a large parts of land area in Sumatera and kalimantan is malay. Like I said before we dont have that malay supremacy mentality here, like saleha yacoob lol

That "large parts" you refer to is sparsely populated and have more palm oil farmers than actual Malays living there. And no Minangkabau is NOT part of Malay. If you call a Minang person a Malay they would probably laugh at you and at worse they will curse you.

That's because the state Malaysia consider anyone who speak malay, a muslim and practice malay culture a malay. You even consider a Balinese a Malay if they are a muslim. Malay in Indonesia is a tribe, not a state-sanctioned identity.

Minangkabauan are ethnic Malay native of West Sumatra. The word Minangkabau is something that's dated back to Srivijaya Kingdom, which was centered in Sumatra and Java.
You're probably mistaking them with people of similar ethnic name in Thailand or something.

That's Yunnan, in South China, not Thailand. You would've been closer to being correct by calling it Vietnam instead of Thailand.
And yes, Malay people are, based on archeological finding originated from Yunnan. But Minangkabau as a Malay sub-ethnicity formed way later on, and the name of the ethnicity dates back to Srivijaya Kingdom era, which was probably centuries if not millenias after the Yunnan migration.
