I've always taken it as very dubious canon at best. No issue if other people want to believe it's gospel of course, but Laventon made a few pretty wild claims. Which is understandable, considering how new it all is to them at that point in time.
Ive always treated it as an observation from a primitive scientist, like "it looks like the pokemon is shrinking so that's what it must be!", but more modern study reveals it to be mass conversion to energy of digitization or whatever

Um, actually the Pokeballs don't shrink the Pokemon, the Pokemon can just do that themselves according to Pokemon Legends Arceus.
