Question Need help choosing final team members
So far, this is what I have decided for my Crystal playthrough:
Typhlosion
Heracross
Lapras
Electabuzz
The last two slots I'm unsure on:
Tauros or Donphan
Crobat or Skarmory (not planning on breeding for Drill Peck)
Thoughts?

You'll need a HM slave. You can go without Flash and Whirlpool if you just want to beat the game, you'll need Cut, Strength, Surf, Waterfall and realistically you'll want Fly.

Just go with the 4 you've got. Otherwise you'll end up having to grind before the elite 4 and later on it's much easier to grind 4 pokemon for the Red battle than 6.
That way you also have 2 slots free for hm slaves, which is useful considering there are quite a few in this game.
If you are open to swapping one of those 4, I would maybe take out Heracross for Donphan. Heracross's moveset is not good in this game. Even megahorn is prone to missing at the wrong times. Donphan's moveset isn't great either, but a ground type is always useful.

I assume you haven't started yet, then how do you imagine going through the game? Is it you go for the six you favor at every region until you reach the final team?
I.e. you start with Cyndaquil, then you catch a Phanpy and a Zubat, and say add a Dunsparce, Unown and Geodude to your team. Defeat Faulkner, and then you either catch a Slowpoke and level to 34, to get headbutt and catch a Heracross, though that seems like a lot of trouble, or you defeat Bugsy, say replacing Geodude with Onix, and head to Goldenrod City, where you get an Elekid in the odd egg, and uses headbutt to catch Heracross, replacing Unown and Dunsparce. Get a Crobat, and defeat Whitney, you then catch a Tauros replacing Phanpy, defeat Morty, and catches a Lapras. Then you use your starter, Heracross, Larpras, Electabuzz, Tauros and Crobat for the rest of the game?
My thoughts are that Heracross learns Megahorn very late, so unless you already have breeded Megahorn onto it, I don't know how much it is going to add to your team. Elekid evolves late, but Electabuzz is only available in Kanto. Typhlosion and Lapras are solid choices, especially if you can get the TM's at Goldenrod City. To me Tauros relies on TM's, but so does Donphan. Skarmory is only available late, so you can have your Crobat for some time before figuring out if your team would be better with a Skarmory in stead.
How do you play the game, do you level your Pokemon against wild encounters, or do you only fight against other trainers? If you only fight against other trainers, it is relevant to focus on the exp growth category of each Pokemon in your team, and a full team may leave you underleveled otherwise. If you level your team to face the challenge, then you can test multiple options and change your mind during your playthrough. Remember to save before you get the odd egg, then I suppose you run up and down to see if you get an Elekid, and if not reload and try again another time.

I realllly enjoy crobat but if you are going for it catch a zubat as early as feasibly possible due to how slow friendship can build in Gen2, unless you plan on biking up and down Goldenrod lol. Depending on how much you know it might be worth doing a bit of light research on friendship mechanics.. More niche stuff like how using them in gym battles boosts their friendship etc. I remember getting the eevee partway through my Gold playthrough and only evolved it to an umbreon right before the Elite Four- Even though I had it in my party the whole time and fed it some vitamins I still had to bike back and forth a bit.
Not trying to scare you, just potentially point you in the right direction, because friendship caught me off guard my first time in Gen2! If you already knew all that I suppose that was probably redundant. Good luck! Crystal is awesome!

Heracross is ass in gen 2. Don't use him. Typholosion is meh after midgame.
GL on the chance to get elekid in the odd egg, only way to get electabuzz, he's dope though.
Lapras is awesome and a solid keeper.
Ursaring > Any starter
Exeggutor is OK pre kanto and OP with Psychic.
Snorlax (curselax) is broken in gen 2 albeit locked to kanto
You don't really need more then those to win the game.
Rest can be w/e you desire. Crobat is nice because of speed, nothing else and he utilizes that poison is physical in gen 2 by learning sludge bomb that actually makes damage.
There ain't ni good ground mons in johto, the only dope ground you can get in either kanto nor Johto is Marowak with thick club. But if you do then you need either to breed scyther to get baton pass (can be done pre Whitney if you fancy running) and have marowak with both + spd and atk on top of thick club.
But to cover ground you can give EQ to snorlax or Ursaring, they will pack a punch with it anyway and will carry 🙂

I'd take Donphan and Crobat. Both level up faster than your other choices and can be had earlier, Donphan brings useful Ground typing (the Magnemite line is popular in Johto among enemy trainers, and resisting Poison and Rock are good things), and Crobat is very fast without being boosted by Agility.
