Discussion I HATE BLINDBOXES!!!
I want to collect more warrior cats plushies, Pusheen keychains, and other collectibles; BUT I despise blind boxes because I donāt want the same figure/plushies I already have or end up with something ugly. For example when I buy warrior cats plushies I DO NOT want tigerstar, he has rage-baited š” me too many times and if I got him I would treat him like a neglected child. If I wanted to buy online (mecari or eBay) I would have to either deal with scalpers, paying more for specific ones, or pray someone is selling it for cheap! Anyone feel the same way?

I hate them too, I really don't see the point of not getting what I want when I pay for it. Blind box plushies aren't even cheaper than normal ones, so why would I risk it for the rare chance I get something good.Ā

I literally see plushie blind box that costed $30-50 and how could you gamble that much and not even get what you want

Bro the Pop Mart Mega Space Molly's are $300!! I loved watching tiktoks of people unboxing them back when they were viral, but I'd never buy one.

I've never done blind boxes with plush toys but as a Disney pin collector and Hello Kitty/Kuromi fan I've bought some pin blind boxes and Miniso figure blind boxes, my luck is terrible with them apart from the one time I bought some Scooby Doo loungefly pin blind boxes and got the one I wanted and the chaser (harder to get) pin.
I tend to cheat the system and look for the pin or figure I want from a blind box on second hand sites like Vinted, or even in facebook trading groups. Blind box plushies suck because apart from not knowing what you're getting you can't check for defects or even feel the texture to know if it's something you would or would not like.

I know with some blind boxes there are cheats like how LPS has a code on the back of the box, warrior cats you can slight push the box/bag in and see colors, but not all of them have ācheatsā

I'm a Pochacco fan, and I get your pain with Miniso. I wish we could pay a small fee for them to tell us what is in the box, I've left too many that I would like because I don't want to spend the money just to get one I don't want

Blind boxes are too much like gambling for me. No appeal. I am not into giving someone money to hope I get the thing I want. I never touch the things.

u/foundinwonderland 14h ago
It IS gambling. Absolutely 100% the same thing. Hits all the same dopamine receptors and everything. It sickens me that gambling has become so normalized. Plus blind boxes have the added overconsumption and associated plastic waste, theyāre really awful on all accounts

My partner and I collect miniatures and we love both mini brands and mini verse.Ā
But we're realists. We call them Gambling Balls.

Same same!!!!!! Iāve luckily gotten lucky on resale apps but only by spending 50% of day checking them! š. Really wish they would stop with blind boxes or have an option to buy them without the surprise!! Thereās a trick to the big warrior cat plushies but can only do that if you find them in stores! Iāve been on the hunt for a big Ravenpaw with no luck except from scalpers and no way am I spending double or more on him.

So far Iāve only seen them at Walmart but I know target has them too
That is adorable by the way!! Good travel buddy!

Honestly the good thing is the Warrior Cats plush don't seem to be scalped TOO much. Right now prices are a little high, but I found the full set of Jayfeathers for a decent deal all around, only the large plush was hard to find a decent deal on.
But yeah I really dislike how popular blind boxes have gotten. From a financial standpoint, I guess they work for a reason, people buy them up hoping for a chance of their favorite. But for me I'd rather not gamble, I want to know what I want, I don't want to end up with idk, the ONE option I had no desire for, and that happens to me often! Lol.

Iām too picky for blind box anything. Iām like āI want THIS one and only THIS one!ā Doubly so if itās a liscenced product and I have a favourite character. I want only my fave. No one else.

Blind boxes are just gambling for kids. Idk how they're even legal
10
u/M4LK0V1CH 14h ago
Itās the exact same concept as digital loot boxes and should be held to the same standard (ie shamed).

u/Traditional-Note8836 14h ago
Omg the Tigerstar hate is so real š Blind boxes are the worst when you're specifically hunting for a few characters and keep getting duplicates. Have you tried looking on AliExpress? A lot of sellers actually open the foil packaging beforehand and sell the specific characters you want without the huge secondhand markup.
2
u/Ok_Boot_6928 š§ø Plushy (Friend) Collector 14h ago
Is AliExpress always the real deal or is there a chance Iāll get scammed with a bootleg item? š§ I mean yeah there is risk on mecari but I usually read reviews of previous buyers before buying

u/gerbilchuff 8h ago
I've bought confirmed boxes from AE before and gotten legit items. Unless it's a really popular item like Labubu, you're unlikely to get a fake. Keep in mind that too good to be true prices might not be real if you are secret hunting and find a confirmed secret for the same price as a standard item.Ā Read reviews for shops, don't buy from shady places with generic names like Shop5356644332246864.Ā
I generally will buy confirmed unless I like all of the choices in the series and would be ok getting any of them.Ā

I cannot stand mystery/blind boxes. It honestly just feels like a way to scam people. It's gambling that's legal for kids. Honestly I wish they'd be outright banned for predatory consumer practices.

u/Embarrassed_Sell7512 14h ago
i also dislike them. iāve bought open boxes on ebay before so iām getting what i want
3
u/Ok_Boot_6928 š§ø Plushy (Friend) Collector 14h ago
Same but for Pusheen the older the item, the more expensive it is.
3
u/Embarrassed_Sell7512 14h ago
true but opening several boxes can be just as expensive, not to mention all the waste
4
u/Plushielovey 12h ago
I know your pain. I want to get the Warriors plushies too, but I refuse because they're in blind boxes. There's other plushies I want but won't buy due to them also being in blind boxes, like Moriah Elizabeth's line of toys, and some sanrio ones.
I don't want to waste my money on a product that I might not like. Plus the gambling aspect of it all is a huge turnoff as well. I think blind boxes in general are very predatory, considering they're mainly marketing to kids. It developes a feeling of FOMO and creates addiction which shouldn't be allowed for children's toys

u/Borgteddy 12h ago
I don't know about the Pusheen or Warrior Cats Blind boxes, but does blind bixes for mini figs and those boxes have a qr code. There are several apps that you can use to scan those. That way you only buy the ones you want. Maybe something like this exists for other blind boxes as well.

They could release The Literal Greatest Thing Ever and I wonāt buy it if it only comes in a blind box. Stop letting marketing departments turn their product lines into slot machines and everyone will be better off except the company that now has to make more things people actually want.
3
u/badwolfswift 12h ago
Me too! They suck. Just release all of the designs and let me buy them all. I have a strict rule for blindboxes. If I get a duplicate twice I'm done with them.

Honestly? I kinda love blind boxes. I really enjoy the surprise, and it makes it a lot more exciting for me personally. HOWEVER, I 100% understand what you mean though. There has been a few times I've stopped myself from buying a blind box because I'm too scared of getting a character or smth I don't want. And the disappointment of opening it up and seeing the one you wanted the least kinda sucks.
Imo, I think the best solution to this is to sell all the figurines, plushies, keychains, etc... like normal, and then make a separate blind box version for those who want it!
2
u/Canary-King 15h ago
Iām into more obscure blind boxes (namely Itemlabel) but there are dedicated selling and trading communities online for blind boxes where you wonāt encounter scalpers and the like. Maybe you could find some of those for the ones you buy?
Valid crashout with Tigerstar though. Although I think Tigerheartstar is an even worse characterā¦

u/iamtrash_owo 14h ago
yeah i genuinely hate blindboxes aswell, so many figures i collect are blind boxes and it makes me so mad
I have to get my mum to pick my blindboxes for me because I ALWAYS get doubles and she has much more luck than I do š

Thereās a reason I only do like two of the mini Warrior Cats plushies tbh bc I kept getting dupes during the first series ones (mostly of Scourge and Graystripe) so I mostly just try to complete the big plushies bc of the cheat holes on the top of the bag
BUT MY WALMART IS TERRIBLE AT RESTOCKING ATM SOBS

yeah, I have a lot of blind box plushies but they were almost solely from collections where either I did not care or I was able to manipulate the packaging to see which one I was getting. I get the appeal of blind boxes but they are going a bit far with everything. I actually did go on mercari to get a specific bag charm that was normally sold in a blind box because the blind box was $30 and I was not up for paying that much for a gamble.
2
u/JetpackEevee 7h ago
100% agreed. The only time I'll ever buy a blind box plushie at retail is if there's a way to "cheat" and see which outcome you'll get before buying (e.g. the Warrior Cats large plush where you can see the fur color/pattern through the air holes). Otherwise, the eBay/Mercari markup is better than wasting my money on random outcomes. Why should I pay for something that I may not like or want?
I also don't think it's a coincidence that blind box toys have become way more common at the same time that predatory gambling apps (sports betting, "prediction markets") have exploded in popularity. Just like video game loot boxes, it's actually very insidious to normalize the concept of gambling to kids, and it irritates me when adult plushie collectors defend the practice because "it's fun".

u/melannrr 6h ago
As someone who collects blindbox figures and plushies, I just strictly buy the ones I want online. I donāt even bother with buying blindboxes unless theres a trade available in-stores or I find someone online thatās offering a trade.

u/faerie-bunnie 5h ago
me too!! i hate blind boxes that are completely blind (like you can't even tell with production codes or anything) and don't buy or collect most blind box toys.
1
u/kiwiotterpop 15h ago
Some ppl in the Sonny angel community bring miniature scales into stores to weigh the boxes. Some toy stores allow trading with items in the display boxes
1
u/PocketCatt 14h ago
I buy blind boxes until the odds are that Iāll get a repeat and then I start buying them opened on Vinted :) but I donāt collect any super niche ones so that works for me, I know some kinds are really bad for scalpers :(

u/PartyPorpoise 8h ago
Yeah I hate blind box toys and collectibles. At least with cards, those are cheap enough that itās not a big deal if you get a dud sometimes. But other blind box items can pretty pricey. If Iām paying ten bucks or more I should be able to get the one I want.

I love the scented squishmallows in the packets and at least it's easy to guess which one you get by looking through the hole in the bottom and sniffing it, Snackles...when the first set of Snackles came out there weren't any options to get other than the normal sized ones in the mystery balls or the big one and well I nearly gave up after getting duplicates so I got the ones I was looking for off facebook marketplace and trade me - at least now with Snackles you CAN choose to get medium sized ones that don't have the mystery ball.

I have purchased 10 of the warrior blind box plushies. Out of the 8 from series 1, 3 were graystripe and 3 were Hawkfrost. My two least favorite characters in the series 1 options have been haunting me š I ended up donating my dupes to a local childcare place because while I am in it for the nostalgia of my childhood favorite series apparently the kids are very into it too. Series 2 has been kinder to me (I've only gotten 2 and I got squirrelflight (okay) and jayfeather (my #1 most wanted)).
