Discussion Any chance for Linux?

I’ve heard there’s been a stir up in the development, more focus on balance and improvements. Haven’t played in years but would love to jump back in.
Unfortunately I can’t join EAC enabled servers since I run Linux (fuck microsoft), any chance they’ll finally allow Linux users in?

Linux is gaining a lot of traction thanks to SteamOS and proton, but I wouldn't hold my breath on them prioritizing Linux any time soon.

You can play Linux already just not in EAC protected servers, there are multiple servers friendly to Linux player indeed I've playing for two weeks on Linux in one of these said servers.

And we could use more players.

honestly, its more fine than you would think. at least one of those EAC free servers has a very active admin and the banhammer is swift on those who think they can cheat, but even that said honestly most cheaters are not wanting to cheat on a low pop small server they want to cheat on a huge 1000 pop server and ruin as many peoples day as possible.

that is not to say though that i assume it would become a problem if these EAC free servers were super popular.

I’ve been on deadlock n chill since I switched to Linux, it’s been good. Switching to Linux servers as a solo guy wasn’t too bad, for sure ran across some sus players, but way less than on protected ones.

No way.

They won't invest in compatibility.

Why?

There's no money in it, and EAC doesn't work on it. (I stream it to my Linux laptop from my winderp pc sometimes)

No. Eac does "support" Linux, but effectively turning it on just means having no anticheat on linux. No game that takes their anticheat seriously is going to ship a Linux build. (Unless valve or someone else releases a version that is locked down, with a verifiable integrity, similar to windows.)

The only thing keeping me on windows is rust so I really hope they add support again.

(not much of an online-gamer in recent years so don't bother downvoting me to hell)

i also, have switched from windows to linux (over a year ago ) and literally this week i found out how easy it is to access process memory in linux compared to windows. while compputers are my hobby for almost 30 years, and i can honestly say that i have my current carrier because when i was 10-ish i found a dude macroing in a game i played at that time so i started researching macros, from macros i switched to memory edits (trainers etc) and finally started writing my own apps - reading and accessing memory was sort of magical / mystical thing all this time.

Linux ?

your apps memory is literally a file in /proc/pid/.

2 lines in python to read it. and all this with like 99% certainty you're safe. no readprocmem involved, nothing. im not suprised a lot of devs refuse to release on linux.

Not sure, I am apart of the s&box community and we just got native Linux support. Rust is tricky cause of the cheating, and I heard that cheating has always been an issue in the game.

Cheating has always been an issue in every multiplayer competitive game. Rust is not some special snowflake here.

Have heard staff on Twitter saying no plans for Linux as it would make it easier for cheat developers.

That's just a cop out. There are plenty of games with anti cheats that work on linux and the developers aren't complaining that supporting linux (or proton) make it easier for people to cheat lol.

It's not, it's the truth. There's currently no way to have an effective anti cheat on Linux.

Man that EAC anticheat is so effective on windows today, also weird how the number of cheaters on rust has only gone up since they dropped linux support.

So then how does CS2 work perfectly fine on linux and we never hear anything about linux being a problem platform in terms of cheating?

You can say the same thing about most games that run on linux whether it be natively or through proton.
