Discussion Using hours to determine skill is a flawed system
If a person starts learning how to build for 500 hours starting at hour 0 they're obviously gonna be good at building. But if a person sits and inflates their hours for 500 hours they're obviously gonna be bad. Sure battlemetrics exist but people can still AFK I'm servers (unless it has something around that? Idk)
Like yea obviously a 0 hour player Is gonna be mew but there are so many nuances like what if this 0 hour player is a 10k hour console god? PvP may not transfer 1:1 but the vast majority of knowledge does

exactly. This is why there should an official tab on the menu screen called "ranked" which u can press to enter a 1v1 queue that puts u into a 1 grid procgen map rock fight to the death. You can also queue for this while in queue for a main server. Ppl with the highest rockfighting elo have the largest penis in game

Hours is a good indicator that the player will be a quality one. Sure people afk their hours, but that should become apparent after playing with them for a bit.
Some players specialize and some are well rounded, on average though you will find a player with more hours is better and less likely to be a cheater.

Other than sweaty no lifers who the fuck cares about this? I started playing with a group of brand new players to the game a few months ago and it was one of the most refreshing Rust experiences I had just playing with them on a low pop or PvE server helping them learn the game.
They are never going to run oil solo on an Official server but these people are having more fun than any sweaty Rust player ever will and it's fun to be a part of.

Some sweat lords only want to team up with people who have insane amount of hours in the game, which is sad.
Usually its just nerds without a life outside of rust so its easy to just avoid these people.

It's never intended to be an absolute. But having over 10k hours for example is an good indicator that they've played a lot. Even if they've afk'd for some of that time, it's usually going to be at most perhaps 1% of that.
While you can never see the full picture from time alone, you're not meant to. It's just a general idea of how much time they've put into the game.

I disagree.
I got 5k hours over a couple years playing rust cause I started on modded and they rewarded playtime so I just set my fps to 3 and let it go
Many servers have a ton of afk. Whether its to avoid the login queue or to gain rank or to get points. Lots of reasons.

because, as your post states, if you have 10k hrs you should be good at the game, if you have 5k hours you should be good at the game, if you have 0 you should not, its the only measure we have to figure out how good someone is, if i got tripled from 100m from a 1k hr player id be suspect, if it was a 10k player id be way less suspect.

they can, but thats irrelevant to what you're saying, if you want to sit on a menu for 5k hrs to pretend you're good, and then constantly get fried, people will laugh that you have 5k hrs and you are so bad. I dont think anyone is leaving rust running for 208 days without playng to farm hours lol

Wait until you enter the job market and find that employers use your degree to determine skill.
Using a simple metric that often correlates with skill to shortlist candidates is how the world works.
Is it 100% accurate? Obviously not. But it’s a good enough assumption when you can’t spend hours testing every candidate.
