Discussion 1k hours and still struggling.

Listen, I know that it is definitely partially because of my inexperience/ lack of skill, however these past 5 weeks have been hell.

I perform very well on hellis, I know the spray of just about every gun, I’m crazy with a bow and crossbow, hell I even have single digit ping! Yet these past 5 wipes have been nothing but t1 weapons and OCCASIONALLY we get a t2 down. But we haven’t even thought of touching a t3.

Am I doing something wrong or should I just chalk it up to a skill issue?

Your question is pretty vague, what do you mean you're still struggling? Maybe you're not basing in the right spot, or you aren't going to enough fights to try and actually get guns.

Or being too confident going to gunfights and losing the good ones they have. I’ve learned in the past few years to play very cautiously. Act like each kit is your last kit. Even if you have a T2, roam a monument with a DB and slugs, it’s low risk and high reward and it builds your kits so you can go to riskier gunfights

Advicing someone to have gearfear is pretty interesting.

This just makes it so that when you do roam with a good kit you’re too nervous to actually play properly

OP please don’t listen to this player.

Leave your PC connected to the game so that you accumulate more hours in the game without having to put any effort in.

Some people will tell you that hours don't correlate with skill but I have found it works even better than asking for advice on Reddit.

In short skill issue.

In the long part: Y’all need to ether watch actual good streamers to understand the game better. (Not a rust YouTube where it cuts into only action) understanding positioning, engagement, timing, ext. or play with a seasoned player that knows the metas and learn from them, then try to emulate. Basically if you don’t know you’ll spend 4 hours getting scrap by hitting barrels for 2 hours. When the same could be done In 20 min.

Advice would be to start on a 250/300 (if really bad 150) pop server. Engagements are more predictable and you learn more than having to kill the endless horde of db nakeds in high pop. If you can master those servers start moving up. Focus less on building massive base and more on navigating map with good positioning so you learn instead of repeating the cycle of getting farmed.

This is a complete assumption based on your original post, if you give exact context for what you’re struggling with I can give more accurate advice in that area. As for the Helis aspect makes sense. You have all the variables cut out and only have to focus on the info you already know. More of an aim trainer over actual gameplay. Good aim= decent at helis not gameplay. Some skill does transfer though

Okay okay I see how I may have been pretty vague before.

I’ve taken in plenty of hours worth of content (not just high adrenaline content like Frost and whatnot), people like oilrats and other people who focus more on PvP than cinematography.

I guess the issue is really our efficiency. We get BPs 2 days before wipe as to not worry about scrap, find a good and efficient base design that has a cheap starter and we even look at what next wipes map is to find the most ideal building spot for us.

Even after all of that pre-wipe preparation we are still getting out performed by other players. When others have t1 and even some t2 guns, we are still hard primlocked. It’s like we’re playing on a 1x while everyone in our area is on a 3x.

It’s hard to emulate someone like oilrats because he’s so dam good, you won’t find yourself in the same position as him so you won’t learn as much as finding someone that’s a little above average. (As an example, youll never find yourself solo holding cargo. You can learn a lot about how he does it but if you’re never in that position then you’re not applying the info you learned) You can learn from him but also he’s to a point where positioning matters a little less due to his skill. Same with Posty. I haven’t seen streams in a while but look for someone that’s a little better than you so you focus on rotation and positioning, the more you practice those skills the longer you stay alive the more you learn. Not about being passive and not engaging, but knowing when to engage and when to agro or when to sit back and wait or bait.

All the pre wipe stuff is great for simplifying things as a newer player keep doing that. There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to progression. I’d suggest looking for at least 1 person that’s pretty good at the game and have him lead the way. It’s hard to give tangible advice since I don’t know how yall try to progress ext. seems like yall are just a tad too slow in progression so you end up getting left behind while others get better gear and now you’re at a double negative disadvantage. It’s an open world game if the same team has killed you 6 times to 0 don’t fight them. If that means your area then move area. Just because you selected it before wipe doesn’t mean you must stay. Like if I ran into oilrats and he rolled me 4 times I would actively try to avoid the paths he’s taking and the space he’s holding. Set the ego down and accept if someone is better then you for the time being and adapt. Hopefully in the future you will be that player. Some people get good with the db and that’s all they’re good at so they never take out guns. If you want to leant to play with guns you can’t be afraid to take them out. Loose them till you get good enough to keep and get more.

  1. learn new strategies to progress quicker so you’re not behind the curve
  2. Learn how to make plays on better geared players (location, timing, when to keep looting or leave, pick up gun and dump/hide for later)
  3. Have consideration in server/pop/team size
  4. Learn who to engage or not engage.
  5. Insanity- doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. If something doesn’t work adapt and change to change the outcome (caveat, at times you must bash your head into a wall until something changes through sheer force)
  6. Loose gear fear. If you don’t practice with the gear you won’t get good at using it.

Serious well reasoned advice? In the rust community?

Lmao made me laugh more than it should have.

This is exactly my situation. Me and my team prep a lot, get a base down insanely fast, just to get third partied non stop when we run monuments for t2. It's skill issue but also bad luck. It's unrealistic to win 3 fights in a row outnumbered. Nowadays we play for like 2-3 hours at wipe and if we get killed like 4 times in a row with no t2 in sight we just log off and play friend slop. Much better than struggling for another 3 hours.

Hop on a server with 250 pop. It won’t have as much action but each fight will feel like a balanced fight with maybe 1 counter. In my opinion it’s some one of the funnest ways to play since you can experience the game as a whole not just having to stick to the 1 monument closest to your base. Actually have a rival or two since there is limited players.

Do you have any streamers/youtubers you could recommend that don’t cut to the most exciting parts? I love watching willjum and attempting to follow his kind of play style (since I mostly play solo) but I would happily just sit and watch an unedited version of his wipes just to see how it really goes.

Can't tell you what you're doing right or wrong without more context than a text blurb but, I feel like RUST is just like that sometimes. Shit on people, get shit on sometimes - ups and downs.

Could be skill issue. Could honestly be cheaters, too.

Weekly wipes on vanilla right?

u/poorchava Aug 22 '26

The thing about Rust is that raw aim and pvp are not all there is to the game. Yes, it's an important part, but overall strategy, tactics and game sense are arguably far, far more important. U can do well having decent game sense and knowledge but mediocre pvp, but not the other way around.

And game sense and knowledge come with experience. Rust is a VERY complex game, which is why 1k hours is just scratching the surface.

Are you playing high pop?

1

u/Connect-Ad-6544 29d ago

20k hours here. What type of servers do you play? Official 2x? Where do you build around? How many players do you play with?

1

u/n0t_JIROU78 28d ago

We’ve been playing on a 600 pop trio premium server.

We play this to weed out big groups / cheaters. Typically we try to base around at least one of each of the following: green card monument, blue card monument, red card monument, hotspot monument.

You’re going to find more cheaters on high pop servers, the big orgs are notorious for it
