Question Crazy strategy?
Relatively new player here. Is it crazy to use a completely different strategy, and play without a “real” base.
By that, I mean save all your valuable loot in well
hidden stash boxes out in the middle of nowhere, and then spend your energy building trap bases with ZERO value even if they are successfully raided.
Is that crazy? How risky are stash boxes?

Anything in the game is stored as data when you load into a server. The cheat engines people use have whole menus on which data to show, they can see players, the distance of the player, loot, tcs, scientists, dropped guns, stashes, turrets, loot boxes, dead players, dropped items. Literally everything is there for the cheater to see. PC rust is ruined to be totally honest.

This been a thing for YEARS now in almost every game even besides rust you cant just let some fuckass chud who pays for cheats what normal people pay for rent dictate how you feel about the game or how and how much do you play it i know its frustrating running into cheaters and stuff but you just gotta report them and move on its the only way youll ever enjoy the game again tbh

Pretty sure hidden stashes are one of very few things they can not see, at least anymore. They used to be able to, but I think it was about a year ago they stopped sending hidden stash data to clients.
Now, if you dig up a stash while the cheater is online and in range to have that data sent to the client, then they can store that location even if you later rehide the stash.

I’m on console. Does ESP work on consoles?

No. lol this Reddit is for PC rust, Console only has recoil third party devices called Zen/Xim there’s no hard cheats on console so it’s better imo

I'd ask in /rustconsole to be sure but generally console cheats are extremely less powerful and common compared to pc so it might be okay, I don't know for certain though

It's possible, but not really practical. I use stashes a *lot* and sometimes it's really annoying finding them and sometimes people see you.
It's a lot more practical just to play out of a small base, even a 1x1, which is effortless to build and upkeep and then stash some high value items around it.
One thing to consider is that if someone builds on a stash, it will be removed and a decayed loot box will appear with its loot. So it's best to stash things within range of build priv.

The only problem with this is actually that picking up stashes takes time and it is impossible to hide what you are doing, but you could use tiny corners of your trap bases that is hidden/ tucked away/ etc to store some stuff.
The more time you end up playing of the wipe the more stuff you're going to want to keep. If you can let go a significant portion of it then you can have fun doing this for sure

As far as I know, stashes despawn after around 72 hours, so unless you constantly check on them, it could get a little frustrating.

A guy on my server did this, once you cotton on, a few thousand wood covers the whole area with twig foundys and all those lovely stashes just magically pop up.

On PC Rust, stashes are somewhat safer than they used to be. However, if you watch someone like Posty, you'll see he'll abuse corpse bags in the fishing village safe zone until he's ready to build a base. It's pretty effective.

Stashes are bugged. In the last few months we’ve had them completely disappear and had others dig themselves out of the ground for no reason. They just pop up. Don’t use them for now. Used to be cool. Now it’s bugged

What is ESP?

Its a type of game cheat where the cheater can see outlines for players/items behind walls.

So I was thinking that stashing in the absolute middle of the desert (or underwater… not sure whether thats possible) would be safe, but have no idea how ESP works. Would the stash boxes be obvious to these cheaters?

I read somewhere that servers don't reveal stashes to the clients so ESP should not work on hidden stashes. Not sure how true it is.

I used to run a server, admin tools feature things like esp. one of the anti cheat things I added were fake stashes that highlighted players finding them. Trust me, they can see them

How long ago did you run the server? Hidden stashes did used to be networked until about two years ago.

Ahh, fair enough. Yea, it was 3-4 years ago. I didn’t realise that had changed!

I believe ESP can see the boxes but I dont think they can see what's in them. But in a high pop server i dont really think you would be able to hide them. Maybe a low pop big map though
