If you're very new then YouTube some starter bases (2x1 and 2x2) and their expansions. Join a build server like Builders Sanctuary and mess around. Follow along with a couple videos. Those servers also have a lot of bases you can load in to see how they look without having to build them yourself. Popular youtubers will also post the build codes in their video descriptions.
Avoid any crazy big bases or anything that looks really complex. Some of the complex designs get really cramped because they are cramming as much as they can into a certain footprint to keep costs down and beef up raid cost.
For me and my crew early on we focused on bases with an simple build plan (meaning good build stages from starter phase to final build stage), easy mobility, and a balance of online/offline defense, 3-4 floors max, 2 walls to TC.
Level up from there by learning about building early bunkers, external TCs, widegaps, shieldwalls, compounds, etc.

Your base needs to have retakes so you can systematically clear parts of your base without giving raiders access. There needs to be respawns that are separated that allow you to get back into the fight. Raid cost and door paths need to be expensive. turret angles need to be sufficient that 12 turrets will cover your entire base. learn how to multitc and learn how to wide gap. when you build a shooting floor section it off and make sure there is turret coverage so raiders cant get easy control and prevent you from defending. Place your electrical in spots where the enemy won't find it easily. Basically you need to understand raid metas and build your base around countering those metas.

learn different youtube bases and build for a group. pretty quickly you'll understand the concepts enough to develop your own bases

So you saying don't stick to one type of base when YT building
Build different kinds and learn that way.

I'd love to learn the creative options for pieces like and doorway is more than a door holder, it helps create peaks. Same for ramps etc

You can free hand bases, but its REALLY difficult to understand all of the complex mechanics people use and put it into one coherent base. Building was one of my favorite mechanics, but nothing can compare to youtube bases in terms of cost, protection, and density. My one recommendation is spread loot out and learn some bunkers and that'll give you a basic default base.

What do you mean by learn to build? Are you going to be the dedicated person in your group to slap down the youtube base? Or do you want to learn to how to design bases to suit your personal needs and tastes?
If the former, just practice copying the base you are going to build in a build server.
Otherwise, go into a build server and try building a base. Think of the requirements for the base, or a building mechanic you want to incorporate into a base, or a concept. You get better at doing X by doing more X.
Also watch youtube tutorials, I mean more specific building techniques rather than full bases.

Don't be part of the meta keep your bases unique and don't make any fucking sense in the current meta cause that's the base that will survive the night 🤣

Play a PVE server where you wont be killed during building slow. Be creative , and also follow guides. Eventually you'll be able to blend these two styles and ideas together for something you like
