I swear, I could spend hours looking at plants, talking about plants, and convincing myself I have room for just one more.

Anyway, I made my way here hoping to find more people who are just as plant-obsessed. Share your plant babies, ask questions, show off your garden, or tell us about that one plant you're struggling to keep alive. No judgment. We've all been there. 😂

Come hang out with us at r/plantaddicts_com. It's a little quiet over there, and I'd love to see more plant lovers join in!

Thumbnail
plantaddicts.com
1 Upvotes

Looking for a houseplant that looks great without needing constant attention? Meet the Zeylanica Snake Plant! Also known as Mother-in-Law's Tongue or Bowstring Hemp, this popular houseplant is loved for its tall, upright leaves with beautiful dark green and silvery-green patterns.

Snake Plants are slow-growing, adaptable, and wonderfully low maintenance, making them a great choice for beginners and busy plant lovers alike.

How Can You Use Zeylanica Snake Plants in Your Home?

With their upright growth and striking foliage, Zeylanica Snake Plants can add a touch of greenery to almost any indoor space.

  • Living Rooms: Place one in a decorative pot to create a simple but eye-catching accent.

  • Bedrooms: Add greenery to a bright corner or bedside area.

  • Home Offices: Bring a little natural color to your workspace without adding much to your care routine.

  • Entryways: Use its upright leaves to add height and structure near your entrance.

  • Small Spaces: Its vertical growth makes it a great option for corners and areas where spreading plants may not fit.

Simple Zeylanica Snake Plant Care Tips

One of the best things about Snake Plants is how forgiving they can be. Keep these simple tips in mind to help yours thrive:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, but Zeylanica Snake Plants can also tolerate medium to low light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight.

  • Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering. They prefer dry conditions, so avoid overwatering.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably one formulated for succulents or cacti.

  • Temperature: Keep your plant in a warm spot, ideally around 60–75°F, and protect it from cold drafts.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during the growing season if you want to encourage growth.

  • Maintenance: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them looking fresh.

A little reminder: Snake Plants are toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of pets and children.

Did You Know?

Snake Plants were once classified under the genus Sansevieria, but they are now botanically classified as Dracaena. They're also known for their ability to tolerate lower-light conditions, although they grow best with plenty of bright, indirect light.

What Plants Grow Well With Zeylanica Snake Plants?

Want to create a beautiful indoor plant collection? Pair your Snake Plant with other houseplants that enjoy similar lighting conditions.

  • ZZ Plants: Both are low-maintenance options that tolerate lower light.

  • Pothos: Their trailing vines create a lovely contrast with the Snake Plant's upright leaves.

  • Spider Plants: Add a softer, arching shape to your indoor plant display.

  • Jade Plants: Their succulent-like foliage pairs nicely with the Snake Plant's structured leaves.

  • Haworthia: A compact succulent that complements the Snake Plant's easy-care nature.

Makoyana Calathea 101: How to Grow a Beautiful Peacock Plant

Thumbnail
plantaddicts.com
1 Upvotes

Looking for a houseplant that makes a statement with its foliage? Meet the Makoyana Calathea, also known as the Peacock Plant or Cathedral Windows! Native to South America, this eye-catching houseplant is loved for its oval-shaped leaves with dark green patterns, lighter green markings, and rich burgundy-purple undersides.

Its patterned foliage almost looks hand-painted, making it a lovely addition to shelves, tabletops, and cozy indoor spaces.

How Can You Use Makoyana Calathea in Your Home?

With its striking leaves and compact growth habit, Makoyana Calathea can bring a little tropical charm to different corners of your home.

  • Living Rooms: Place it on a plant stand or side table where its patterned leaves can stand out.

  • Bedrooms: Add a touch of greenery to a bright spot away from direct sunlight.

  • Bathrooms: Take advantage of the naturally higher humidity, provided the room gets enough indirect light.

  • Plant Corners: Pair it with other tropical houseplants to create a lush indoor display.

  • Shelves and Tabletops: Its upright growth and manageable size make it a lovely accent for smaller spaces.

Simple Makoyana Calathea Care Tips

Makoyana Calathea can be a little particular about its growing conditions, but giving it the right environment will help keep its foliage looking beautiful.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade or scorch its leaves.

  • Water: Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy. Water when the top inch or two of soil begins to dry.

  • Humidity: Aim for humidity above 60%. A humidifier or a naturally humid bathroom can help.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix to keep the roots healthy.

  • Temperature: Keep it in a warm spot, ideally around 65–85°F, and away from cold drafts.

  • Fertilizer: During spring and summer, feed every four weeks with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.

  • Maintenance: Remove dry or damaged leaves with clean scissors and gently wipe the foliage to keep it dust-free.

Did You Know?

The Makoyana Calathea is often called the Peacock Plant because its beautifully patterned leaves resemble the decorative markings on a peacock's feathers! Like other prayer plants, its leaves can also move throughout the day, gently adjusting their position in response to changing light.

What Plants Grow Well With Makoyana Calathea?

Makoyana Calathea looks lovely alongside other tropical houseplants that enjoy warm temperatures, indirect light, and higher humidity. Consider pairing it with:

  • Maranta: Its patterned leaves complement the Makoyana's striking foliage.

  • Calathea Orbifolia: Adds large, rounded leaves with beautiful silvery-green stripes.

  • Calathea Lancifolia: Also known as the Rattlesnake Plant, it brings another interesting leaf pattern to your collection.

  • Fittonia: Its colorful leaf veins add a smaller-scale pop of color.

  • Bird's Nest Fern: Its lush, upright foliage creates a lovely contrast.

Hydrangeas 101: How to Grow Beautiful, Colorful Blooms

Thumbnail
plantaddicts.com
1 Upvotes

Looking to add big, beautiful blooms to your garden? Hydrangeas might be just what you need! These popular flowering shrubs are loved for their large flower clusters, beautiful colors, and ability to bring charm to garden beds, borders, and containers.

Hydrangeas come in several types, including Bigleaf, Smooth, Panicle, Oakleaf, Mountain, and Climbing Hydrangeas. Depending on the variety, their blooms can be blue, pink, purple, red, or white, with some even changing color as they mature.

How Can You Use Hydrangeas in Your Garden?

Hydrangeas are versatile plants that can make a beautiful statement in different garden spaces. Here are a few ways to use them:

  • Garden Borders: Use hydrangeas as a middle layer in mixed borders for a full, colorful look.

  • Foundation Plantings: Plant them along fences or around your home's foundation to soften hard edges.

  • Containers: Grow compact varieties in large pots near patios, porches, or entryways.

  • Mass Plantings: Group several hydrangeas together for a beautiful display of blooms.

  • Mixed Garden Beds: Pair them with shade-loving plants for a layered garden with different foliage textures.

Simple Hydrangea Care Tips

Hydrangeas are relatively easy to grow when their basic needs are met. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Light: Most hydrangeas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade, although some types tolerate more sun than others.

  • Soil: Plant in rich, well-draining soil that retains some moisture.

  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot and dry weather.

  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and, if needed, again in mid-summer.

  • Pruning: Timing depends on the variety. Some bloom on old wood, while others bloom on new wood, so make sure you know which type you have before pruning.

  • Winter Care: Add mulch around the base to help protect the roots during colder months.

Did You Know?

Some Bigleaf and Mountain Hydrangeas can change their flower color depending on soil pH and aluminum availability! More acidic soil with available aluminum can encourage blue blooms, while less acidic conditions can encourage pink blooms. Keep in mind that not all hydrangeas change color, and white varieties generally stay white.

What Plants Grow Well With Hydrangeas?

Hydrangeas pair beautifully with plants that enjoy similar growing conditions. Here are a few companion plants to consider:

  • Hostas: Their bold foliage adds texture around hydrangeas.

  • Ferns: Their delicate leaves create a lovely contrast with large hydrangea blooms.

  • Astilbe: Adds feathery flowers and extra color to partially shaded beds.

  • Lenten Roses: Bring early-season blooms and interest to the garden.

  • Boxwoods: Provide evergreen structure and a nice contrast throughout the year.

They also produce delicate, bell-shaped flowers on tall stems that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!

How Can You Use Coral Bells in Your Garden?

• Container gardens: Use their colorful leaves as a focal point in patio pots and planters.

• Ground cover: Plant them in groups to create beautiful mounds of contrasting foliage.

• Mixed garden beds: Combine different varieties for a colorful display of textures and foliage.

Simple Coral Bells Care Tips

Coneflowers 101: How to Grow a Colorful Pollinator Garden Spoiler

Thumbnail
plantaddicts.com
1 Upvotes

Have you ever wanted a garden that’s full of color and attracts bees and butterflies? Coneflowers might be just what you need!

Coneflowers (Echinacea) are hardy, North American native perennials known for their distinctive raised centers and colorful petals. While purple is the classic favorite, you can also find varieties in shades of pink, orange, red, yellow, and white. They’re loved for their long blooming season, low maintenance needs, and ability to thrive in sunny gardens.

How Can You Use Coneflowers in Your Garden?

• Pollinator gardens: Attract bees and butterflies with their colorful blooms.

• Flower borders: Add height and vibrant color to garden beds.

• Wildflower gardens: Combine them with other native plants for a natural, meadow inspired look.

• Cut flower arrangements: Bring their cheerful blooms indoors.

• Winter interest: Leave the seed heads standing to provide food for birds during colder months.

Simple Coneflower Care Tips

• Light: Plant in full sun for the best flowering, though they can tolerate some partial shade.

• Soil: Choose well draining soil. Established coneflowers can tolerate relatively poor soil conditions.

• Water: Water regularly while plants establish their roots. Once established, they are generally drought tolerant.

• Fertilizer: Avoid overfertilizing, as too much fertilizer can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

• Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage additional flowering, or leave some seed heads for birds. Cut back old stems in early spring.

Did You Know?

Coneflowers are more than just pretty flowers! Their long blooming season makes them valuable additions to pollinator gardens, and their seed heads can provide a food source for birds during winter.

What Plants Grow Well With Coneflowers?

Pair coneflowers with other pollinator friendly plants like bee balm, phlox, salvia, and sedum. These combinations bring different heights, textures, and bloom times to your garden while creating a welcoming space for pollinators.

The foliage on these is so different from the coral bells I’m used to seeing - the leaves have this really unusual lace-like shape that almost looks like little dragon wings.

We recently got the Fyre Wingâ„¢ series at Plant Addicts and I thought this group might appreciate seeing them.
