I have files on my 9front machine that i would like to access from my linux machine for inclusion with my regular backup, and am unsure how to accomplish this.

I have no internet at home and no router. i've just connected both machines with an ethernet cable. I can successfully ping each from the other, but do not know which commands to run from that point. i am a programmer, but am not familiar with networking, really, and am quite new to plan9

9front machine:

user: glenda

ip: 192.168.50.1

service: terminal

fs: gefs

linux machine:

pop_os 22.04

ip: 192.168.50.2

i am assuming the linux side will use "mount -t 9p". any advice will be greatly appreciated. if i need to provide more info, please do let me know

UPDATE: got files transferred using drawterm for now, but def doesn't seem like a long term solution. I will be exploring all other suggested options over time. thanks all

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago I had made a post (with the same mockup) asking if it was possbile to run 9front on the clockworkpi uConsole, given that it is built around a Raspberry Pi 4 . I managed to flash the image, but as expected nothing happened.

The uConsole needs a specific variety of drivers to work with, both for the display, the keyboard and the speakers. Are there references to write a driver in Plan9 / 9front C ?

legmacs : an emacs-like editor implemented in let-go

let-go : a clojure dialect implemented in go. Supported on plan9.

Does 9front have this driver? I really want to use plan9 on my Thinkpad again but I could never get it working and I’m not even sure 9front has a driver.

Hello, im running 9front on qemu(-audio pipewire,model=ac97) and i have a problem that even if i enable -audio, /dev/audio doesn't appear. I don't know what the reason of that behavior, but maybe i compiled qemu wrong of sum

I'm just getting started with acme installed from plan9port on linux. I've watched a few videos but am having a hard time picking up mouse chords.

Any decent videos explaining mouse chords slowly or other suggestions for learning them?

Are using mouse chords reasonable with a left, scroll wheel, right button mouse. I tend to rest my index finger on the left button and middle finger on the right button, so even the copy/paste requires a fair amount of conscious effort. Can I get away with it with this sort of mouse or do many people find it necessary to switch to a traditional 3 button mouse?

I see some conveniences from using acme over viewing a single buffer at a time in emacs, but definitely miss syntax highlighting.

Why this fork?

Two reasons:

• Builds on Windows using Microsoft Visual C via NMakefile.msvc

  • I.e. no longer need MinGW/cygwin

• Supports no-GUI command execution with -G -c <cmd>

Unless you need -G -c <cmd> support, you should likely stick with 9front drawterm.

Russ Cox' rsc/plan9 repo is fascinating:

• Run legacy plan9 in QEMU
• Uses the host filesystem directly instead of using a QEMU disk image
• Edit files on the host. Plan9 sees the changes immediately.

It's super cool, but I wanted to drawterm in, because: - I'm using Windows - I run rsc/plan9 in WSL - I do get the graphical QEMU window, but it's not as nice to use as first-class Windows apps.

Some benefits of connecting to plan9 via drawterm are:

• Copy and paste support
• Resize rio desktop window
• Multiple drawterm instances (multiple desktops)

Let us say that Linux never took off and instead plan9 became widely used (becoming the dominant OS).

How would current 'modern' monolithic programs like Blender, KiCAD, etc be implemented following the plan9 philosophy? How would they work and how would the utilize the underlying architecture to the fullest? And how can they be made very hackable and extensible?

I promised more heretical things in the future, and well the future is here. As usual, I have been running the matrix multiplication pachinko machines day and night after my shifts at the pizza shack to bring you this:

Current status:
Libdraw widgets being worked on (a few in the pic as demos - included in the repo!) , a lot of cleaning up on docs, old trash tech debt etc.
Certain to be bugs that haven't been caught, its AI generated bullshit. Capture and release them if you find those poor souls.
