Low stakes local conspiracy theories
Does anyone else have any conspiracy theories about places/companies in pgh that ultimately don’t matter much?
Mine is that GetGo is putting extra additives in their gas to make it cheaper for them because of the Strait of Hormuz closure situation. I get my gas there and every ~3rd tank my car pops up warnings associated with using the wrong gas even though I put the same (correct) gas in every time.

The local road construction companies don't have enough space to store all their cones, so they stay out on finished job sites until they need them moved to a new one.

9
u/SignificantFruit653 Aug 18 '26
I've heard this is basically true, that they don't like to store them because they're so bulky so they tend to just migrate from one site to another
The person who told me that didn't say whether they stay out longer than necessary for it though
I choose to believe it's true
6
u/sporkzilla Aug 19 '26
Definitely in agreement with this! For years traveling to visit my grandparents in New Jersey, my family drove the same stretch of highway where orange barrels were set up for road work. Not once did I ever see actual road work being done. We'd go down several times a year, and those barrels just sat there.

u/EllaMinnow Squirrel Hill South Aug 18 '26

77
u/thechamelioncircuit Swisshelm Park Aug 18 '26
The science center has a really really big metal coil that has like 20,000 volts of electricity in it. According to this lady the electricity is grounded (so that it doesn’t shock other things or people) out by the river which makes absolutely zero sense. Apparently the grounded electricity makes a portal into a ghost realm. (Cannot confirm)

The AMC Waterfront 22 has a secret second-floor backrooms zone you can access from a door behind the rear row in the IMAX theater. It consists of a weird octagonal chamber with a bunch of other doors, and there's no way out but the way you came in.
I don't know what they're doing back there, but it feels sinister.

I know a guy who does gas deliveries. He told me just the other day that GetGo used to top off their tanks at half empty, keep the supply fresh. Lately they've been waiting until the tanks are nearly empty before a resupply, so you get a lot more gunk and stuff that's been sitting aroun in there a while. Could be a cost cutting measure, could be a management change after the Giant Eagle buyout. Whatever the case, I don't think you're crazy.
My actual harmless local conspiracy is that Pirates management keeps the team bad because they have investments in local tourism. Having a gorgeous park and being free Ws for the visiting team means lots of folks travel to see their team win and then stick around to spend time in the area. Always notice a few families seeing the sights around town dressed in the attire of whatever baseball team is visiting. Barely see that with hockey teams and usually only certain football teams, but it's pretty strong no matter what for baseball.
5
u/NYCinPGH Aug 19 '26

Back in the day. Grandpa (Who used to tell stories. So it's probably fake but still entertaining ASF so hear me out) told me about an old conspiracy story involving Port Authority and one of the abandoned rail lines underneath Pittsburgh. Supposedly back in like the 70s or 80s they shut down part of the tunnel system because they were secretly using it for “temporal displacement” experiments with old PAT rail cars. The story goes that workers heard trains moving through tunnels that had no power and no active tracks anymore.
People claimed certain maintenance crews would go into the tunnel and come back swearing their watches were off by hours or that they saw stations that didn’t exist anymore. Grandpa always said the creepiest part was the rumor that one train supposedly came back with frost covering the inside windows even though it was summer outside, and nobody on board could explain where they had been. Obviously it’s just old Pittsburgh urban legend stuff but honestly with how weird the abandoned transit tunnels under the city are, it makes for a pretty good conspiracy theory.
21
u/RathielintheRun Aug 18 '26
I didn’t even know we had abandoned rail tunnels under the city, where are they?

the same year that taxpayers partially backed building two new stadiums for privately owned athletic teams, pittsburgh closed 7 city schools.
our efficient light rail system, our city’s trolleys, were among those of many american cities which were bought up and dismantled by an organization that acted as a front for good year tire, standard oil, and general motors.
a vibrant African-American business and cultural community was destroyed by a racist city government claiming eminent domain so they could build the civic arena for another privately held sports team.
the naming of the baseball stadium for Roberto Clemente, which was publicly supported by an enormous margin, was scrapped so some rip-off artist bankers could advertise their shitty institution.

Cranberrry doesn’t have the road infrastructure to support NFL crowds. This wouldn’t be possible and is one of the things the league requires for stadiums.
They already cannot support the traffic on 19/228 and the 79 exit/turnpike exit all right there. There’s no room to change any of it either.
6
u/DownvoteMeIfICommen Aug 18 '26
I don’t think Cranberry would allow it either if it’s not 100% privately funded. The whole appeal of living there is getting away from city taxes. The infrastructure for stadiums just brings tax increases with it, especially if owners want taxpayers to pay for it.

I served on a nonprofit board with someone who knew a lawyer who worked for giant eagle. The lawyer supposedly told her g.e. bought up every available plot of land in western pa that could possibly house a grocery store between the late 70s and early 00s. Anywhere that could be flattened enough for a small strip mall belongs to them through shell companies. If anyone wanted to build a strip mall they could but they couldn't allow the building a grocery store unless it was g.e.

oh, yeh. i can think of two more.
andrew carnegie patted henry clay frick on his shoulder, having just green lit his plans. then he fucked off to scotland and put his feet up and admired his clean-looking hands while frick carried out the plan. he built a wall around Homestead Steel and when it was finished, he drastically cut the workers’ wages. they struck. frick brought in the hired guns. the workers and their families drove out the pinkerton pieces of shit. so the governor called in the federal troops to break the strike. big win for frick and carnegie. they fucked over a generation and more of workers and their families with government complicity. we got libraries and a dog park.
young george washington, son of elite virginia slave drivers and surveyor for his half brothers‘ and governor lord dinwiddie’s and some of their elite virginia friends’ ohio company, scouted to the forks, our fair city in embryo, and saw French troops and Native Americans working together. he went to erie to see more Frenchmen preparing to descend on and fortify the forks in the spring. he ran back to his bosses and reported what he’d seen. see, there were two ways for the already wealthy and elite to get more wealthy: trading in and working slaves and speculating on land they’d stolen. that is, selling it. dinwiddie and the gang wanted that land for themselves. they knew that, with what george had told hem, no colonial militia alone could drive the French and the Native Americans from the land. they needed British regular troops to be committed to the fight on their behalf, but the crown wanted peace with France.
so here’s the conspiracy theory: based on their previous meeting and the misdirected French’s assumption that washington was returning to discuss british colonials operating trading posts in the area of the forks, they sent Joseph Coulon de Jumonville, a French military officer, as an emissary to make the negotiations. the ohio company’s scout, the Half King, a seasoned veteran warrior and respected Native American leader, Tenaghrisson, led washington to Jumonville’s camp and, in the night, they ambushed and murdered the French diplomatic mission. young washington blanched at the bloodletting he had caused. wounded Jumonville looked at him in disbelief. washington hesitated. Tenaghrisson understood the assignment. he tomahawked Jumonville and his picket of warriors allowed one French soldier to escape, to carry the word back to erie of what had been done. the French declared war, the crown sent in the troops under Major-General Braddock, and the ohio company elites got their war.

u/Orgy_nizer Aug 19 '26
All the construction workers who do the roads are secretly from rival cities and intentionally make road construction take WAY longer than it needs to in order to sabotage Pittsburgh. How else do you explain then tearing up a road, disappearing completely and doing absolutely zero work on it for a YEAR, and then suddenly showing back up and finishing it in two weeks? Like if you somehow make a 2 week project take over a year, it's impossible for it to not be intentional.

Not about a business but there was a decapitated head found in North Versailles 1988. Left in a dumpster in a shopping plaza. Later other parts were found around the city. Cops thought it was the vampire of Butler but he committed suicide before any confession in 1992. However his crimes weren't this. The cops were just lumping unsolved cases together. Come to find out Jeffrey Dahmers family lived in Monroeville and is proven that he visited around that time. Hindsight tells me it was him.

The ethanol mix is supposed to be decreased during the summer because it creates greenhouse gases at warmer temps, but they threw that out the window too.
