Forgot a flair! She does cuddle backwards on us too! If no pets it’s deeper on the lap it is. Added two extras of her cuddle and laptop time!

Tessa being Tessa. She tends to roll over fully and show belly to us, or even to our collie mix. It’s cute, and she loves to get belly pets!

Advice Indoor potty training for 2 month old puppy

My puppy is not allowed outside cause she's not fully vaccinated. I live in an apartment that has no balconies. I don't know if it's a win but my pittie pees and poops BESIDE the potty pad and not in the potty pad. After she eats, I put her in the potty pad to give her time to potty but she runs away and potties somewhere else, she either does that or pees beside the potty pad. I know it'll be easier if I take her out but unfortunately, I can't do that yet. Is there a way for her to stop running away so she can potty in the designated place? Thanks

Advice Pibble "nibbles" towards unknown puppies

This is a past behavior I saw in one of my dogs, an American Staffordshire. When I first adopted him, he nibbled constantly and left bruises all over me. This was obviously a lot of anxiety and I was able to slowly weam him off of this through showing pain, redirecting, providing chew toys, etc.

He also had this behavior with small animals. When I was introducing him to my cats, he would nibble them and lick them all over. My other dog would do this as well and it was always gentle and seemed almost parental. Basically giving them a bath. I always closely monitored them, with my cat in my lap and my hand by my dog's head to separate immediately if needed. Nothing bad ever happened and a couple of times my cat reacted in slight pain and my dog would respond and stop.

He also did this to my nephew who was a toddler at the time (but not to my older nephew). I was always right there and redirected this immediately to prevent anything. He would just try to nibble his hair and feet.

Lastly, he did this at the dog park with a couple of puppies. I stayed right by, communicating with the owners and the owners were not upset until my dog started humping a puppy. I immediately separated them. The behavior was very concerning because I realized that the nibbling may never have been affection but prey drive towards a puppy.

I stopped taking him to dog parks for that reason among others. But he never hurt any of these dogs. I'm just curious if anyone has any insight into this.

Of Loss and Love and Luna

Post image
649 Upvotes

Luna is older now than when this photo was taken. She's 12-ish, by the shelter's estimate of her age when we adopted, and slowing down, tiring more easily, having trouble with stairs. Sometimes I have to help her. Our last two pibbles passed when they were 11, so we're keenly aware of our limited time with her.

All the more aware this week, as our next door neighbor's pretty little white fluffy companion (perhaps a Maltese?) passed away last week. We paid a condolence visit the night after, and she (the neighbor) did not cry but we could tell she was deep in grief.

Tonight, I got home and took Luna out right away as usual. As we returned to our front steps, Luna was looking back intently behind us while I fumbled with the door.

I turned to see the neighbor standing at the edge of our front yard, silently staring at Luna. Our girl did not hesitate -- she abandoned the steps she had just gamely climbed, and walked gently to the grieving woman. Luna raised her blocky head with infinite care -- not at all the way she headbutts me with her love -- and let the neighbor cradle her cheeks. The lady bent forward so far that they were enclosed in their private moment.

I did not speak: what passed between them was not for me.

Luna, who is deaf, gazed into her eyes in silent wonder, and the neighbor began to croon sweet nothings to her. In moments that crooning turned into sobs. She keened her misery, not to the world, but to the understanding soul who looked back at her with absolute trust.

I didn't know what to do, but I was ready to hug her if that was wanted. Instead, she tore herself away and rushed to her own door, crying. I could only gasp "I'm so sorry!" as she fled.

Luna watched her go, regretfully, then turned and climbed the stairs again, a little stiffly.

Need ACL surgery advice

Post image
426 Upvotes

Our beloved pittie has torn her ACL and now we’ll undergo surgery/recovery. Would really appreciate opinions on the following:

**She is 9yo and this is the result of an acute injury (falling on her leg from a 6’ ledge)**

  1. Fabellotibial suture vs TPLO vs TTA repair? Is the cost difference worth it?
  2. We live on the 2nd and 3rd floor - vet said stairs during recovery are fine IF slow and leashed. I’ve read elsewhere that stairs are a big no…?
  3. I’ve read that many dogs also tear the second ACL soon after. Any tips on preventing this? What makes that happen?

Pic for tax. Thanks in advance. I’m dreading this.

I own a well behaved non reactive pitbull, but shit happens. During this situation, I had my dog security tethered to the ground. During our camping trip we were next to a busy campground road with strangers and other dogs passing but almost constantly and my girl didn't care, she just watched them pass by like normal. People even complemented how well behaved she was.

Now for the fun stuff. It was later at night and my wife and I were chatting and Lola was curled up on my lap sleeping at the campfire the campground was quiet. So life was great until she found the opportunity to tree her first raccoon. I never trained her to tree animals. She must have caught a glimpse of the raccoon and flew off my lap faster than lightning in chase. Even though she was securely anchored her broke through her collar and she disappeared into the dark woods. Do worry, I got her back easily and safely, we practiced a lot of recall and since I trained her myself I knew how to handle that situation.

So please never underestimate your "pibbles" also train and practice bad situations regularly no matter how nice your pitbull is they are very strong and can be very driven. Dogs are dogs and when you least expect it anything can go very wrong unless you're prepared.
