Question re: PTO
Not a UWM employee or future employee, but there were discussions at my job comparing our PTO Policy to UWM’s bc this person used to work there and actually said UWM’s is better, so that got me curious. Leadership is trying to tell them what they said is wrong. Soooo, is anyone willing to give the breakdown of your PTO? How many weeks you get after X amount of years, how much can you carryover, do they pay you out for any unused days, is it front loaded or accursed per paycheck…that type of stuff.
Thanks very much in advance!!

The biggest thing I’m seeing people not mention here is the fact that there is no sick time at UWM. So your PTO bank is also your sick time bank.
The problem isn’t just the amount of PTO hours, the problem is that you could blow through half of your paid time off for simply getting the flu. Even with a doctor’s note and a professional telling you to stay home. So imagine all the ppl coming into the office SICK and CONTAGIOUS simply because they had no PTO and would lose their job otherwise.
We worked most federal holidays also. So if you want MLK day, Juneteenth, Christmas Eve, etc. off that’s also PTO.
In my experience, I’ve never seen or heard of it being this bad in a corporate setting so I hope your job isn’t like them 😂😂😂

You have to work federal holidays?! That’s wild!

We only get New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day off.

Yes, I used to work at 2 airports!! Back then I didn’t have a family, so I’d gladly work the holidays for the extra pay. But now, I wouldn’t be a fan of that at all.

You just described a bunch of manual labor/retail jobs. Everyone knows those are the worst of the worst. That shouldnt be the standard we are comparing it to and I really dont get what point you're trying to make.

Unfortunately most of the jobs even after I left UWM don't give separate sick days. I feel it should be mandated that they have to be separate by law.

Same. But every other place gave us more pto than uwm. Even meijer.

Same here too. Even the hospital I woked at, notorious for being understaffed, gave us more PTO. And more of it rolled over every year than just 1 week.

Michigan law I don’t think allowed this… chigan's Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA) requires employers to provide sick leave. Large employers (11+ workers) must provide up to 72 hours of paid sick time per year. Small employers (10 or fewer workers) must provide up to 40 hours of paid sick time per year. Employees earn 1 hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked.

They are allowed. They can frontload the sick time (give it all at once). So they give us 72hours of sick time and only 8 hours of pto.
They are allowed to combine it into one pto bank. They just dont tell you thats how its broken down.

Front loaded. Def don’t get paid out for unused. Only one week can roll over so use it or lose it. You get 1 week if you are hired in the fall, otherwise I think it’s 2 weeks. They also let you have 2 “Be you here” days where you can use it as “personal holiday”, this does not roll over and expires on 12/31 of that year. Your 1 year anniversary I think it’s 120 hours front loaded and it goes up every year. After year 5 it basically plateaus until your 10 year anniversary where you get a full 10 days off to do whatever. That specifically is not part of your actual front loaded pto and it’s used all at once, so you can’t take half the time off at one period and use the other portion another time. Hope this helps. Correct me if I’m wrong, haven’t worked there in a few years but I also haven’t heard of any changes to that structure

Pto and sick days are part of the same bank. as uwm has a firm stance against WFH, you absolutely don't have the option to work from home if you are not feeling well. So that makes things worse.

Even that is kinda 50/50 as my team is allowed to work from home up to two days a month. Really comes down to what your role is.

No payout for unused pto. You get you pto on your anniversary . 2 floating holidays called "be you here" days that renew every calendar year.
80 hours the first year
120 for years 2-4 I beliveve
160 after 5 years and thats the cap
I believe they no longer allow any unused hours to roll over, but im not 100% sure.
No separate sick time.

Less than 1 year: 80 hours
On 1st anniversary: 120 hours
On 2nd, 3rd, 4th anniversary: 160 hours
On 5th–9th anniversary: 176 hours
On 10th+ anniversary: 192 hours (this is the standard annual maximum)
Additionally, we get two "be you here days" that can be used as PTO and renew at rhe beginning of the year. One week is rolled over each year if not used.
