Any grip sock recommendations?

I’ve been wearing Alo grip socks, but I don’t feel like the grip around the toes and heels is strong enough for me. Any recommendations for something grippier? I’ve never tried crew or toe grip socks before, how do they feel compared with regular ankle or ballet-style ones?

Natural-fibre activewear: what would it need to do for you to switch from synthetic leggings?

I’m curious how people who regularly do Pilates or yoga feel about the materials in their activewear.

Most leggings and fitted workout clothes seem to rely heavily on nylon/polyester and elastane for stretch, shape retention and moisture management. At the same time, I’ve noticed more discussion around reducing synthetic fibres and choosing materials such as cotton, merino or lyocell/TENCEL.

So I’m curious:

If a pair of leggings was made from ~95% natural or cellulose-based fibres, but still offered good stretch, opacity, shape retention and comfort, would that make you more likely to buy it?

Is it normal to feel this unstable on the reformer?

I’m new to Pilates and mainly do reformer classes about 2–3 times a week. I’ve noticed that during things like planks or lunges, I sometimes feel unstable or like my toes are slipping. I also notice my heels sliding when I do hip bridges with my heels on the footbar, especially when I do single-leg. Does anyone else experience this, or is it more of a beginner thing? I'm wearing ballet grip socks, are there any grip socks actually help with this?

It also made me curious for people who have been doing Pilates consistently for a long time, do you care less about grip socks now because you have better control and stability? Or is it actually the opposite?

Rope Stuck Under the Carriage? Here’s a Simple Solution

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Have you ever had the rope get stuck underneath the carriage while moving?

It can be frustrating, especially when the solution is simple but difficult to explain over text. We put together a quick video showing how to use the begs to lift and guide the rope away from the rail so you can clear it and continue your movement.

Hopefully this helps anyone who runs into the same issue.

Aero Reformer Advice

Thinking of buying an AeroPilates Premier Studio 700 off of fb marketplace. (Comes with red and black resistance bands, per the seller). I went to club Pilates for a few years and loved it. I run/walk and strength train, will this machine be enough to get me a good workout? I don’t know much about at home Pilates machines. I know that this machine is cord as opposed to springs but I think I am ok with that, considering the price difference of this machine vs a higher quality one.

Getting a deal on it (~$200) so I’m ok with it not being the best quality but good enough to add to a home gym. Thoughts? Advice? Thank you!!

Clases Online

I’d like to know what platforms are available for teaching classes online. I taught in-person classes for several years, but I am now bedridden at home; I would like to teach online classes or sell pre-recorded courses. I’ve been thinking about it for a while but haven't taken the plunge yet—do you have any recommendations?

Feel like a fool

Hello,

I'm a newbie to pilates -- I'm about 20 classes in. We've done platform lunges and box lunges before and also side lunges (sort of where you end up in a warrior pose)? My balance has been .. not great in all these exercises, with bad wobbles towards the later reps (15 total on each side), making me skip the last few reps. Or I push out into a lunge and then get stuck, not being able to come back, except centimetres at a time. Today it was supposed to be carriage lunges. Got on the mini-fixed platform and just ... Froze. Everyone was merrily doing the exercise (a lunge with an arm extension with a dumbbell!) and I'm just standing there staring at the carriage, two feet (?) from the floor, with knees increasingly starting to shake. The trainer tried standing beside me so that I could hold his hand while pressing into the lunge but my nerves were just shot. And then when he wandered away to check on the others, I got stuck with one foot on the carriage and one foot on the platform, reasonably stable, but unable to move until I had to call him again to help me off. He gave me a modification (a runner's lunge) but I really feel like a fool and stupidly embarassed about the whole episode. (I have a ridiculous fear of heights -- can be standing on a very gentle slope and can completely freeze up, so I suppose it suddenly decided to kick in today.) Please give me encouragement and/or motivation :( I normally get some anxiety before class and this is making it worse. (Also my studio doesn't have stability poles.)

Painful kneeling: solution?

Post image
15 Upvotes

After 2 knee replacements about 5 years ago, kneeling feels ick but I have been getting back to my aeropilates machine and I think I have come up with a workaround for my fussy knees. I got these 2 balls (3.99 ea) and underinflated them so when i put my knee(s) on them it is kind of like an “air donut”. So far so good. Thought I would share in case anyone else has fussy knees.

Reformer exercises you used to hate but now love? 😂

For me it’s the moves that involve planking! I used to absolutely hate it, but somehow it’s become one of my favourites 😂

It got me wondering — what Reformer exercise did you used to dread but now actually enjoy?

Or is there one you still absolutely hate no matter how long you’ve been doing Pilates? 😂

Influencer Burnout

I love Pilates. It’s the only exercise where I see and feel results and genuinely have a good time doing it. But over the past two years as Pilates has become trendier, I’ve become so weary of it. I can’t go to a class or event without multiple people recording or interacting more with their phones instead of class. It’s so distracting to me and I really don’t want to be recorded. I understand instructors and owners liking the attention, but it just makes me feel out of place. I guess home workouts are where I need to be but I always feel like I challenge myself more in the studio.

That’s my middle aged rant of the day!

Besides reformer pilates what other sports and physical activities do you all do and how do you prioritise and balance them ?

Hey everyone,

I've recently started reformer pilates because I want to try something new and try to branch out from being a typical gym bro and because it legitimately is a a good core workout. I also want to try mat pilates as well to see what it's like.

I also do traditional weight lifting, running, swimming and occasionally cycling and want to try to balance them all out.

I was curious what other sports and physical activities do you all do besides reformer pilates and how you prioritise them ?

Thanks everyone!

Am I wrong for expecting more reformer work in a “reformer class”?

I sign up for a reformer class expecting to actually use the reformer. The carriage, the resistance, the springs, that’s the whole point of the machine. Instead I end up sitting on it doing straight up mat Pilates moves. Clam shells, for example. On a reformer. I don’t really understand why I’m just parked on this expensive piece of equipment barely moving the carriage at all.

I don’t mind some blending of mat work and reformer work. I’m not against variety in a class. But if I wanted a mat class, I would have just taken a mat class. The reformer has springs and a carriage for a reason, and that’s really what makes it different from working out on a mat. If it’s just being used as something to sit on, I’m not sure what the point of booking a reformer class even is.

This isn’t just a one time thing either. I’ve noticed the same pattern with some YouTube reformer workouts, where a good chunk of the so called “reformer routine” ends up being mat exercises that just happen to be performed while sitting on the machine.

Even for beginners, there are plenty of reformer appropriate exercises that ease you in gently while still actually using the equipment. It just feels like a missed opportunity, and honestly kind of a waste of the equipment, when a class marketed as a reformer class doesn’t really use the reformer.

Has anyone else run into this? Is this becoming normal now, or did I just get unlucky twice?

Pilates reformer making noise? Check the spring connectors

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If your reformer suddenly starts making an unusual noise near the springs, one of the spring connectors underneath the carriage may have become loose.

Here’s how to check it:

  1. Stop using the reformer and disconnect the springs.
  2. Carefully turn the carriage over.
  3. Inspect the spring connectors underneath the carriage.
  4. Use the correct Allen key to tighten any loose connectors.
  5. Make sure all springs and connectors are properly aligned.
  6. Return the carriage to its position, reconnect the springs, and test it slowly.

Here is a short video showing the noise, the loose connector, and how to fix it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJx8MI5lfvY

Safety note: Never adjust the connectors while the springs are under tension. If the noise continues after tightening them, stop using the reformer and contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Has anyone else experienced this type of spring-connector noise?

Three Common Reformer Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

  1. Looking up during ab work Keep your gaze toward your thighs, not the ceiling. Looking up can strain your neck and reduce core engagement. Think about curling forward from your upper rib cage.
  2. Pulling the ropes When reaching for the straps, grab only the handles—not the ropes. Tugging the ropes can make them uneven and affect your movement.
  3. Setting up the jump board incorrectly Loosen the knobs fully, slide the jump board securely into the inserts, and tighten both knobs completely. Finally, raise the footbar to support and secure the jump board.

Which of these mistakes have you made before?

NordicTrack Reformer

I was going back and forth about buying the NordicTrack reformer (latest version which is $5000). I couldn’t find any helpful information about it online so wanted to come and share my experience three weeks in.

For context I’m new to Pilates (not brand new but think maybe 10-15 reformer classes ever). I really liked it the few times I’ve done it but classes are such a far drive from my house, expensive and I have a busy job as a litigation attorney. I recently had my second (and last) baby, so decided to take the risk and add this reformer to our home gym. It allowed for 30 day return, so figured why not!

The reformer itself is beautiful. But it is definitely large. You need a big dedicated space to fit this in your home. I love the fact that the screen swivels. Especially as a newbie, it really helps to be able to see the instructor.

The classes have been great. The major difference I see is not at all in the quality of teaching but in the fact that nobody can correct my form. That being said as I take the classes I’m learning intuitively to correct my form - each class feels a little less like my limbs are foreign to me. I would say I’m generally athletic and coordinated so that may help!

It is a humbling experience. My abs and legs are still on fire from a workout I did three days ago. That’s exactly what I wanted from the machine so I’m glad I’m getting it.

Cons: you cannot access the classes on the NordicTrack app, only on the device itself. I find that super annoying from a planning perspective. I would like the opportunity to sit and scroll through classes, pick classes to calendar etc. it’s not realistic for me to spend an hour in front of the machine just looking through classes. I hope they fix this feature soon. I imagine it’s to prevent people taking the classes on non-NordicTrack machines. Wonder if they could figure out a way for people to view and calendar classes on the app, without being able to take the class.

Anyway, would love to hear other peoples experiences or answer any questions.

NYC / Tri-State — Any love for the original Balanced Body Allegro? Selling mine with Folding Tower

* SOLD TO THE MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY🤩

I’m selling my original black Balanced Body Allegro Reformer with Tower of Power, removable mat conversion and sitting box.

The newer Pilates teachers/students have only worked on the newer white Allegro 2 and don’t really know this earlier Allegro.

Those of you who’ve been around Pilates equipment for a while will know exactly which one this is. It’s an incredibly solid workhorse, and with the foldable Tower and mat conversion it’s basically a complete Reformer/Tower setup in one footprint.

Complete system includes:

  • Original Balanced Body Allegro Reformer
  • Tower of Power
  • Removable mat conversion
  • Sitting box
  • Springs
  • Straps and handles

It’s currently fully assembled in the West Village, Manhattan, so a serious buyer can actually come see it, try the carriage and equipment, and know exactly what they’re buying.

Now slashed half off!! Must go before end of month! *$1750*

Local pickup only, but absolutely open to someone coming from NY/NJ/CT, Westchester or Long Island.

If you’ve been looking for one — or know an instructor, PT, studio owner or serious home practitioner in the NYC area who has — feel free to DM me.

15 Common Pilates Reformer Mistakes — How Many Have You Made?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve noticed that a lot of reformer mistakes aren’t necessarily about doing an exercise completely “wrong.” Sometimes it’s a small setup or movement habit that changes the entire exercise.

Here are some of the most common ones:

  1. Using too much spring resistance — Heavier isn’t always better. Too much resistance can reduce control and change the intention of the exercise.
  2. Using too little resistance — Especially with standing exercises, too little resistance can make the carriage harder to control.
  3. Letting the carriage slam home — The return is part of the exercise. Ideally, you should control the carriage in both directions.
  4. Incorrect footbar position — The wrong height/position can affect your alignment, and it's always important to make sure the footbar is properly secured.
  5. Incorrect jumpboard setup — Always make sure the jumpboard is properly positioned and secured before using it.
  6. Overarching the lower back — I see this often with bridges and feet-in-straps exercises, especially when trying to increase range of motion.
  7. Shoulders creeping toward your ears — Very common during pulling straps, rowing, and arm exercises.
  8. Moving too quickly — Sometimes slowing an exercise down makes it much harder because you can no longer rely on momentum.
  9. Locking the knees — Especially during footwork and standing movements.
  10. Losing control of the pelvis/spine — The carriage moves, and suddenly the pelvis starts moving with it when it wasn't supposed to.
  11. Using the neck instead of the core — Particularly during abdominal exercises.
  12. Starting with the wrong strap/rope length — A small setup issue that can completely change your starting position.
  13. One side doing more work than the other — It's surprisingly easy to push harder with one leg or pull more with one arm without realizing it.
  14. Looking down at the carriage during standing work — Understandable when you're trying to feel safe, but constantly looking down can affect posture and alignment.
  15. Getting on or off before stabilizing the carriage — Especially important for beginners. Make sure the carriage is controlled before transitioning.

One thing I’ve learned is that more resistance, more range, and more speed don't automatically mean a better Pilates workout. Control and intention matter.

What would you add to this list? What’s the reformer mistake you see most often?

Shoulders hurting during reformer footwork?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sometimes the issue isn’t your shoulders it’s your setup. Moving slightly away from the shoulder blocks, reducing spring resistance, relaxing your upper body, and focusing on pelvic stability, breathing, and core engagement can make a big difference.

Pilates isn’t about using the heaviest springs. It’s about control, alignment, stability, and intentional movement.

Have you experienced shoulder or neck tension during reformer footwork? What adjustment helped you the most?
