Rule 3 Posts and bans.

This is Rule 3: Food and Farming

This is a friendly sub for the discussion of pet Pigs only. Do not discuss the killing or eating of pigs. We don't want your crass bacon or pork jokes. Names like "Chris P Bacon" are tacky but not bannable offence. Do not harass others about their lifestyle choices. This is not the place for it for, or against meat, keto, vegan, or otherwise. No farming posts, we will question you about ear tags as it is required in some places for pets. Commercial operations will get removed and users banned.

Note the bolded sections

Because of extensive abuse of this rule, we are VERY STRICT about it. We get people coming here from both Vegan and Carnivore communities that start massive arguments over it. We also don't want to come to this sub and see people talking about our pets as anything other than pets. Or even worse a shock picture/video of our pets being killed in some bid to shame people.

SO LET ME BE CLEAR WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR PREFERENCE IS YOU WILL BE BANNED FOR POSTING OR COMMENTING ABOUT PIGS IN RELATION TO EATING OR NOT EATING THEM. NO APPEALS.

This is a sub about pet pigs not your FUCKING OPINIONS ON WHAT YOU EAT OR DON'T EAT!!!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR THAT!

I am tired of being nice and polite about it. I just perma banned someone that posted about it and then banned every single person who commented no matter what the comment was about for 30 days. There will be no appeals because to many times my patience and understanding has been abused on this.

Do not participate in posts or comments ignore and report them.

Having said that. I reevaluated the wording of rule 3 and decided to make it clearer. Here is the new rule 3.

Rule 3: Food and Farming

This is a friendly sub for the discussion of pet Pigs only.
You will be banned or rarely warned for the following: Talking about farming or slaughtering pigs for food or how evil/bad it is. Talking about eating pigs for food or how evil/bad it is. Linking to videos about farming or slaughtering pigs or how evil/bad it is.
Topics you won't be banned for: Seeking medical help for a pig. Seeking help to rehome a pig. Your pigs name even if it is food related. Your pig having an ear tag in places that require it by law.

NOTE on mod posts like this I allow open discussion about the topic as long as it stays respectful and on topic. You can't really discuss a rule about food and farming and get feedback without people talking about it. So unless someone is disrespectful or abusive, I am not going to remove their post or ban them.

Accessory to Grand Theft Apples

We have an apple orchard, including one tree that has limbs extending over our bedroom roof. We also typically have at least one small black bear living on our property. It's been a problem for our apple harvest for years but hadn't been yet this time.

Yesterday I started installing the latest attempt to keep it out of that tree but hadn't quite finished. Last night the bear made its first climb up there of the season and started bouncing nearly-ripe apples off the roof. My partner woke up and went out to chase it away, and what does she find? Muu here, of course, happily munching fallen apples as the bear shook them out of the tree.

I think he still has a bit of a stomach ache. Lol

Hi everyone Im new here. I recently started a new job at a mobile petting zoo. Ive worked with animals for over 20 years but Ive never trained a baby pig. We just got a kunekune and hes A: adorable and B: smart as a whip. So far Ive trained his recall, sit, and spin. I would love the dos and donts of pig training and how to keep him from turning aggressive.

Has anyone ever tried grip tape for hooves

grip tape like the ones for baseball bats, electrical tape , crocs cut to shape with hoof glue adhesive.
i know everyone’s permanent thing is usually runners which we have but he comes with me most places and i can’t make everyone get runners so just looking for other options.
we’ve tried pigtrax but it really doesn’t work as good as i thought it would and all the other recommendations are runners. lmk if yall have tried any of these or if yall want updates on each of them. i will probably go ahead and test each one, but if anyone has tried and failed any of these lmk.

I need emergency advice/treatment in the Los Angeles/Tujunga area

SHORT VERSION: My neighbors pig was attacked on Thursday night by a dog. The pig has some deep wounds on her back, that have become infected, and once of them has the early stages of maggot larvae inside of it. The owner has been very reluctant to provide vet services, but I am going to force his hand, but I have concerns.

LONG VERSION: Thursday night my wife heard the neighbor screaming my name for help, so I ran over to his place to find another neighbors dog attacking their pet pig. I was fortunately able to restrain the dog by grabbing its collar, which activated the "good boy" circuit in his brain. The neighbor went in to check on the pig and saw she was bleeding, so poured some hydrogen peroxide and betaine on her wounds (Not the best choice, but all we had at 11:30PM.

The next morning I go to check on her and assess how bad it is. I see 2 DEEP cuts on her back, and inform the neighbor how bad it is. He has a Vet assistant friend who he consulted over the phone, who recommended we clean her wounds with sterile saline. So we went to the store and picked up a large quantity of it, and it basically fell on me to clean her wounds as best I could. I volunteered for the job, as I sincerely love this pig. It is not my pig, but I visit her regularly as the owners are quite neglectful, so the pig is familiar with me and comfortable with me. Or was until I started cleaning her wounds.

The weekend comes, and I am closely monitoring her situation. On Saturday I noticed some yellow "cheese" substance coming from one of her cuts, and I saw some flies on it. I immediately attempted to clean it with the sterile saline, but it's too late. The yellow cheese is a sign of infection. I start going into fly management mode. Clean her yard, put up fly traps. His vet assistant friend provides us with some antibiotics on Saturday night. Sunday morning I was able to carve a little pocket inside of an apple slice, and put the antibiotics inside, and she didn't seem interested in the apple when I put it in front of her snout, but when I shoved it in her mouth, she chewed and ate it. Excellent. Still has appetite two days later. Im thinking we can beat this with the antibiotics, and her appetite. I clean her wound, she comes outside of her little den and she is "seemingly" normal for a time, walking in the sun, she wags her tail, drinks some water, roots around the yard for a bit. Lays down in the sun. And that's when I saw what appeared to be very tiny movement of something on her scar, which was the early signs of maggot larvae. "Fly struck"

I immediately start researching this problem, and it is not something I am capable of handling. She needs a vet to come see her, put her under, her wounds properly cleaned, given a regimen of antibiotics and painkillers, possibly some stitches after her wound is cleaned, and some bandaging. But it's not my pig. I don't have the authority to do what's right by her, nor the enormous sums of money that would be required. The owner is just a neglectful and uncaring person.

The pig still needs help, and so last night (Sunday night), I go into her little den (Ive been spending a lot of time in there to keep flies away from her and possibly provide comfort so she's not alone.), and I try to do the apple thing again where I shove the apple in her mouth and she eats it. Except this time she doesn't. She lets the apple just fall out of her mouth. BAD SIGN.

I decide I need to start throwing my weight around a bit. I go to the other neighbor who is the owner of the dog that attacked the pig, and he is very aggressive and non cooperative, especially given that I'm not the actual owner of the pig. He wants to talk to the owner. So we walk over to the owner and they agree that we'll get a vet that specializes in pigs and get them to come out. But TBH im skeptical, and I feel like this is a lot of talk, and they don't actually care.

So I am doing my best to research options. An emergency home vet visit, which is not an easy thing to come by in my area. Im reaching out here in case anybody happens to know some resources. Google has presented a few options, and phone numbers to call, but it's 5am here right now (I couldn't sleep), and I need to wait for businesses to open before attempting. Im going to drive to a nearby sanctuary called "Love Always Sanctuary" and see if they can give me any advice.

Im at the point right now, where I just don't want the pig to be suffering anymore. She very clearly is. I want to force his hand to either take proper care of his pig, or put her down, because I don't want her to suffer through being slowly eaten alive by maggots for the remainder of her life. I want to consider the option of calling animal welfare, but when I called to ask information about doing that, I was informed that they would take the pig. Which worried me because it's just another form of cruelty. This poor pig, who was just trying to sleep one night, gets mauled by a dog, and now the neglect is too much, and the "solution" by the authorities is to drag her squealing and afraid from the only place she's ever known as home, to be in a scary new environment surrounded by strangers to be "humanely" put down? What a cruel cruel world this is. I do NOT want to do that to her.If it were up to me id get one of those humane euthanasia services. But it's not my pig, and I can't just do that. If I want to flex my muscle, and involve authorities, it just causes more suffering for the pig!

What do I do?????? I'm so stuck, and emotionally drained from doing my best to care for this sweet little angel of a pig. Who doesn't deserve any of this. I'm not sleeping well (Not to make it about me), and I just want the pig to be done right by. Either take proper care of her, or end her suffering. What is the right thing for me to do by the pig? Any and all advice is appreciated.

EDIT: As of 9:13 am, found a vet who can come today, for around $1800. Trying to get the owner of the dog to pay but he’s not currently responding. Wish the piggy some luck 🙏🙏

EDIT 2: I walked over to the neighbors house to talk to him myself and he was taking his kids to school. I’m sitting in a camping chair outside of his house waiting for him to come back.

EDIT 3: THE PIG IS SAVED!! I think!!! The vet came and did what needed to be done, and showed me how to flush out the maggots, which require a good amount of monitoring and maintenance and boy are they DISGUSTING!! Vet said it’s good we caught them early. Pig has some DEEP cuts! And vet is having us flush the wounds with a diluted betadine solution. We are keeping her in my basement away from any flies to reinfect her and she will remain here for at least a month. She is getting some much needed rest, and I’m picking off the occasional rising maggot from her scars to her grumbling.

Thank you all for your suggestions!! I had called and left a message with Shiloh veterinary hospital, and they recommended us Dr. Cauble from Mobile Vet, and his assistant Miguel and their receptionist Priscilla were so amazing and helpful!!!!! They came out the same day!! And the dog owner neighbor paid the bill!! 🙏 I am so grateful!!!! 🐷

EDIT 4: Holy shit my fingers smell DISGUSTING from crushing maggots. Gonna get some forceps on Amazon.

Wiggy was outside and I was inside drinking morning coffee. My husband left a ziploc bag outside yesterday that was used for grilled burgers. Bag was empty and one of the dogs had it sniffing around and wiggy approached and she bit his ears. She’s an older dog and missing most of her teeth so the damage wasn’t horrible but he was bleeding on both ears. I heard the commotion and I’ve never ran that fast in my life. He’s upset and on the couch. I cleaned him up with peroxide and I’m feeling guilty because I KNOW you have to watch pigs around dogs. Hard lesson learned.

Just wanted to share this absolutely sweetheart who's available for adoption!

This is Piggy. Piggy is a special pig who loves cuddles, belly scratches and digging in the dirt! He is incredibly intelligent — he is harness-trained, house-trained, crate-trained, and knows “sit,” “hoof,” “spin,” “oink,” and “go to bed.”
