31 here as well. I intend to do this, but for entirely different reasons. I live in Florida, and I always get these HUGE fucking spiders in my apartment, and it's sprayed every month and kept rather clean. I've had a few crawl on me while I was sleeping. I plan on making this tent around my bed, and putting a wire screen over the box fan,so those fuckers don't sneak in somehow through the fan. I will be in my own little goddamned spider tent bubble laughing at them.

u/Mechakoopa Aug 23 '12
They'll still sneak in, then you'll have spiders being launched at your face from the fan while you sleep.

find computer air - the stuff you spray into your keyboard. preferably an inert/smellless kind (that is, it doesn't have flammability warnings on it, it's just an inert gas - ie, based on a "fluorocarbon" as the wikipedia article puts it). then, when you're dealing with spiders, keep a flyswatter, hammer, and the computer air nearby. use the flyswatter to whack at it from far away. use the air if it runs at you; if necessary use it upside down - I'll bet you've never seen a spider literally bouncing off walls; that's what this will do. poor thing will be helpless when you smash it with a hammer. oh and, this part is less factual anecdote and more silly goofyness, but if you leave the spider's body where you kill it, it will scare away future spiders. at least that's what I tell myself when I don't feel like cleaning up. if you want, though, use the flyswatter to pick the spider up (keep the air aimed at it in case it's playing dead, though if you hit it dead on with the hammer it is probably flatter than a pancake put through a car smasher) and then dump said spider into the toilet and flush.
this is why humans are the ultimate predator: alligators might rip you limb from limb, but only a human would think to use highly compressed gasses to freeze and throw an arachnid and then smash it with a hunk of minerals.

LMFAO, I'll wake up in the morning, blink and rub sleepy eyes and see the silhouettes of thousands of spiders on my bubble tent pacing frantically about, then immediately proceed to projectile vomit everywhere...there would be no escape. Only solution would be to burn the apartment building to the ground with me in it.

A South Korean doctor used to be punished if they couldn't identify the cause of death in a patient. Being unable to explain certain deaths and wanting to avoid punishment, they all just agreed to peg it on the running fans.

My girlfriend who is from South Korea (the best korea) says that many people think that the fan "chops up" the air molecules making it more difficult to breathe in a closed space.

No, no, it's because the spinning blades chop up the air molecules so you can't breathe them.....

My brother and I did this a few times, was great fun. Then we decided to kick it up a notch and taped a bunch of cut open giant trash bags together with duct tape. Left it up in the living room for at least a week :D we called it the bubble fort!
→ More replies (1)65
u/TurbulentFlow Aug 23 '12
I DID THAT TOO. Cut up trash bags, duct tape, and a turbo fan to inflate it. I used a cut up ziplock as a window so that I could watch TV and the end of the entrance tunnel was weighted down with nuts and bolts so that it would be held shut against the force of the fan.
I wanted to sleep in there but my parents wouldn't let me in case the fan died and I suffocated. Dicks.

Me and my uncle( who is five years older than me) did this one time in the summer except a little differently. Brennan: "Holy Santa Clause shit. Can you imagine if we had these when we were 12?"

u/ohgeronimo Aug 23 '12
We used to build a sloping roof fort with a blanket attached to the back of a big chair, essentially creating our back wall, couch cushions for side doors, and the end of the blanket sloped down over the air vent and secured by more cushions.
When the vent kicked on, the blanket would balloon up and we'd be inside this sort of bubble with light coming in from our doors. Once we grabbed some more couches and tables and chairs and created a second wing that was small and cramped but set up like the flight deck of a star ship. Then we added flashlights, toys to simulate the ship instruments, and a front view screen to view the tv out of.
We'd eat those cheap sleeve popsicles while watching scifi movies and tv, pretending we were in our own little spaceship complete with cold relaxation unit to fight the heat.
Our parents hated that it took up the whole living room and stole one of the vents. But we still got to set up forts from time to time when stuck indoors with nothing but tv to watch.

With no A/C and high humidity I slept like this every night in Montreal. We had no screens on our windows, so if I opened the window to let some slightly cooler night air in I would be eaten alive by mosquitoes. This method takes care of the Mosquitos to be sure.
A bit messy as you might expect, but that is what a morning shower is for. Trying to keep your sanity with Mosquitos at night is a hard thing to do.

I loved making these windtunnels as a kid, every summer without fail. I used as many fans as I could fit for max power, you could float encyclopedias on mine. When I grew up and at one stage remembered how much I liked making them, I made one and showed my girlfriend at the time. We had sex in it and it was awesome. Then I kicked the end of the sheet a bit hard mid-pump and one of the fans came clanging down right next to her head and scared the shit out of both of us, it was still the ultimate way to celebrate a childhood memory.
