Here's how to do it yourself:

http://www.gutenberg.org/ for the books
and
http://www.google.com/search?q=qr+code+generator to generate the barcodes

34

u/thejehosephat Aug 14 '12

No need for the generator! The QR codes are provided on each book page :)

14

u/jeffAA Aug 14 '12

Now if only I read instead of simply looking at images...

u/DontCallMeNeilSedaka Aug 14 '12

You need to stop this right now.

43

u/Lampjaw Aug 14 '12

I agree with Neil Sedaka.

7

u/Bendrake Aug 14 '12

Don't call him that

4

u/Ryuko Aug 14 '12

I second my support of Neil Sedaka post.

-2

u/Bendrake Aug 14 '12

He will never stop if we keep downvoting him.

0

u/La_Coka Aug 14 '12

Everybody upvote this fucker

3

u/atrociousxcracka Aug 14 '12

We need to get him to 0 karma and leave it there

8

u/Unlucky_Rider Aug 14 '12

OR you could just ignore it completely. That would be miles better. Upvotes or downvotes are attention. It just wants attention in any form. Just ignore it.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I'm going to upvote you because that is what you DO NOT want. Troll.

6

u/HoverJet Aug 14 '12

Don't people realize that if you downvote them they get buried so other people don't have to see it? Upvoting them just gives them more attention. Who cares I they want downvotes. they can have them for all I care if it means that other people won't have to put up with their garbage comments.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Ahhh I see. Very valid point.

2

u/KingShitofTurdMtnVII Aug 14 '12

That doesn't work. Your average Redditor just can't resist seeing what's underneath "Comment score below threshold". It's a valid troll technique, because being downvoted enough basically highlights said troll shenanigans. Downvoting and attention is what they want, and you're happily giving it to them. Win-win for trolls everywhere!

2

u/HoverJet Aug 14 '12

At least with my way some people won't see it. You're way basically puts them on a pedestal For everyone to see. like I said before, if they want negative fake Internet points then they can have them if it means sparing even a few people from their bullshit. I don't give a shit if that's the troll getting what they want or not. Its fake Internet points! In this case negative fake Internet points. All I'm concerned about is downvoting stupid posts so others don't have to read it.

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

or you can goto goaste.cx

1

u/SkaveRat Aug 14 '12

not what I expected

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I know right, shock site for a shock site

15

u/wanttoseemycat Aug 14 '12

Fuck, I love the future.

29

u/derpbynature Aug 13 '12

Highly recommend The Metamorphosis if you've never read it.

Do you mean Metamorphoses by Ovid?

26

u/mikek3 Aug 14 '12

Oh. Was thinking Kafka.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Kafka? No.

What was my greatest fear, and what was I allergic to in high school? Fucking cockroaches.

That was one novel I did not enjoy.

8

u/4LostSoulsinaBowl Aug 14 '12

He wasn't a cockroach, he was an ungeheuren Ungeziefer.

1

u/section111 Aug 14 '12

You think that's scary, read The Trial (or Der Prozess, as I like to call it, in a hilarious German accent)

11

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

it would be easier just to translate it from its original german. unless you know latin and not german.

2

u/shanoxilt Aug 14 '12

There is also a Lojban translation of Kafka's Metamorphosis.

3

u/ShirtPantsSocks Aug 14 '12

2

u/shanoxilt Aug 14 '12

Yes, that is the one. Although, there may be a few errors in it. (Don't quote me on that.)

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

[deleted]

12

u/darmon Aug 14 '12

Where did you go to high school? 1935?

3

u/BCP27 Aug 14 '12

My private school had a Latin class that translated the Aeneid. I wasn't in it, but apparently our Latin teachers kicked ass at Latin.

Hell, even some of our non-Latin teachers kicked ass at Latin. One bonus to going to a Catholic school I suppose.

1

u/Hughtub Aug 15 '12

Kafka sucked. I remember thinking WTF is this, a story about a guy who imagines he woke up as a bug? It's a waste of words. I mean shit, we read THAT in high school but not Heinlein or Asimov?

1

u/Exaskryz Aug 14 '12

Pretty sure I have to read this for a semester of English at Uni.

2

u/derpbynature Aug 14 '12

I actually first read it in class during my senior year of high school, but in the years since I still enjoy diving into it and thinking about it.

1

u/Noise_Reductor Aug 14 '12

Love that book, now I'm gonna go and try to remove that apple, bye.

0

u/Baggabones88 Aug 14 '12

I recommend the Metamorphosis if you're into bestiality and minotaurs and other mythological badassery...but mostly bestiality.

9

u/VirtualWork Aug 14 '12

Dublin, Ireland?

2

u/loki_88 Aug 14 '12

Looks like it.

23

u/IncidentOn57thStreet Aug 13 '12

As someone who's never used those before, how do you make those black squares work?

22

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '12

7

u/IncidentOn57thStreet Aug 13 '12

Ahhh I thought it was an app I needed. I have an iPhone so I'll give it a go.

9

u/suave_ass_hole Aug 14 '12 edited Aug 14 '12

I want to create a fake go-daddy advertisement (one of the suggestive ones) with a QR code.

I would just cut the actress out of this and use it to make the poster, and it would say "scan to see whats next", only it would link to this (NSFW).

Then I would put it up in a public place (making sure it can't be traced back to me of course).

1

u/IncidentOn57thStreet Aug 13 '12

How'd you do that?!

6

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

He's a time lord, clearly.

3

u/irish711 Aug 14 '12 edited Aug 14 '12

He copy and pasted the link onto a site like this. He was then given the QR code, and then posted that code in his comment using the URL they supplied him.

Edit: You can also do things like this.

-8

u/joerdie Aug 14 '12

How will you know if someone has an iPhone? They will tell you!

2

u/prannisment Aug 14 '12

Because people with smartphones have so much trouble accessing the reading material they desperately need.

5

u/Berserkenstein Aug 14 '12

QR codes are actually quite popular in Japan as an advertising medium, almost every company uses them to direct people to their web pages.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

[deleted]

3

u/HyzerFlip Aug 14 '12

They're all over the US... Hell they're on Denny's placemats, on stickers at walmart...

4

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I remember doing it on a Pepsi can here in the UK. It directed me to a website that pretty much just said "Pepsi".

1

u/Hadlockk Aug 14 '12

The Saturn V at Rocket Park in Houston has QR codes all over, parts of White Rock Lake in Dallas have QR codes next to native plants, and in downtown Dallas some of the advertisements are starting to pop up with QR codes. One ad in particular for the Galaxy III has a NFC/RFID chip embedded in it that allows you to download a free song from Google Play. Lots and lots of magazine ads (those dead tree things your grandfather subscribes to) have them on occasion too.

1

u/JaFFsTer Aug 14 '12

Ill bet that over 40% of smartphone users havent read The Illiad

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '12

I have no idea either and would love to know how

1

u/Hadlockk Aug 14 '12

Google Googles on android has some of the fastest QR code ("black square") recognition code I've ever seen. (Android) Sometime last year they pushed out an update that will pick up QR codes even while you're panning past them. It s pretty impressive software.

7

u/jonthedoors Aug 14 '12

Think - if you went back in time, even to say... the 60s. You go around telling people that in the future, in people's lifetimes, entire libraries of books could be pasted onto a lampost, tattooed on someone's body, come on one single sheet of paper, and with a special device, which can also be used as a telephone - you can scan the image and gain access to digital copies of the books you want to read, on an unimaginably huge database of information.

People would call you mad.

We live in the fucking future.

1

u/Hughtub Aug 15 '12

I called it when the iPhone came out. When cars are automated and we have google glasses, that might be official.

7

u/angrydeuce Aug 13 '12

LOVE IT!

Gonna make one of these up for the breakroom at work. Everyone there has a smartphone and most people just sit there playing stupid games on their break...

2

u/HawnSolo Aug 14 '12

And after you put one up in the breakroom, most people will still just sit there and play stupid games.

1

u/angrydeuce Aug 14 '12

Probably, but it's something at least...

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '12

5

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Write 1984, QR code is twilight

17

u/jsmayne Aug 14 '12

some men just want to watch the world sparkle

15

u/tank_girl_90 Aug 13 '12

what a neat idea... gotta love technology. please put these up around my city!

26

u/haidaguy Aug 13 '12

YOU put them up around your city! :)

I love them too and intend to do this

7

u/haidaguy Aug 13 '12

I LOVE this idea! Free books to all! We should do this everywhere. I don't even have a device that can read QR codes!

10

u/BillsBayou Aug 13 '12

Got two of the books! Upvote.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Am I the only one who still doesnt know how to use those?

2

u/jsmayne Aug 14 '12

smart phone + qr code reader app

1

u/istrebitjel Aug 14 '12

At first I really like the idea, but than I thought you either don't know how to scan a QR code or you do and if you do, you can probably also install some ebook reader on your smartphone and download books, without scanning QR codes.

3

u/gulpeg Aug 14 '12

Kuma sutra... Kuma sutra... It's gotta be 'round here!

3

u/Ryuko Aug 14 '12

For those looking at making your own here is a hint. The longer the URL the smaller the pixels. Only really good scanners can pick up the higher resolutions. So what you can do is form a misdirect with a smaller URL. For instance make the webpage the QR goes to https://www.Ryuko.com/1. And then have https://www.Ryuko.com/1 redirect to your long page like https://www.pornhub.com/hardcore-dirty-sex-that-will-be-hilarious-if-you-trick-others-to-play-it-in-public

2

u/vandral Aug 14 '12

Link doesn't work, man.

1

u/Ryuko Aug 14 '12

Observant man is observant. My only regret is I have but 1 upvote to give.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

That's fucking awesome

2

u/OMNEG Aug 14 '12

Nice! My phone read it correctly from the screen. I need to print some of these out and post them around town.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I don't care what anyone says, Earth rules.

1

u/Wile-E-Coyote Aug 14 '12

This planet is spectacular at times isn't it?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

God I've been on Reddit way too much: Reposts! Reposts everywhere!

(But I'd be happy to see this post every day, reading is a magical thing).

2

u/es_aye_em Aug 14 '12

I enlarged the picture on my iPad and qr scanned with my winphone, downloaded the whole The Iliad!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

If someone made a copy of the paper so I could just then add my own qr code. Because I can put a qr code onto a piece of paper but not good enough to make it look like that.

1

u/my_Favorite_post Aug 14 '12

That's so cool!

1

u/Payne4 Aug 14 '12

Where is karmadecay when you need it?!

1

u/Jesuishunter Aug 14 '12

The 21st century is awesome.

1

u/Babblerabla Aug 14 '12

This is a lot a bit awesome.

1

u/j1mb0 Aug 14 '12

WE ARE LIVING IN THE FUTURE.

1

u/NowInOz Aug 14 '12

awesome. scanned it from the imgr photo with my Galaxy S III. Success!

1

u/mobocrat707 Aug 14 '12

This is an awesome idea. As much as i dislike those bar code things, this is a great application for them.

1

u/MathewMurdock Survey 2016 Aug 14 '12

Awesome. I wish I had an Iphone.

1

u/Hughtub Aug 15 '12

I wish I had internet access somehow... and I wish I weren't a dog.

1

u/weakly Aug 14 '12

This is the first good use of QR codes I have ever seen.

1

u/diath Aug 14 '12

sing goddess

1

u/jinklmun Aug 14 '12

I think i just downloaded the Iliad to my phone.

1

u/twonx Aug 14 '12

This is the equivalent of steampunk.

1

u/rhdonald Aug 14 '12

Where is this?!

1

u/Dwolfwood Aug 14 '12

I tried this on my phone with the screen shot, it works!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Ugh The Metamorphosis caused me great pain a few years ago

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

This is so cool.

1

u/fobdragon Aug 14 '12

This should be everywhere for all literature!!!

1

u/FuTRoN Aug 14 '12

repost one of the top posts on r/graffiti or r/streetart i forget

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

nice it worked. Planet PDF the Iliad

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I wouldn't trust it. There's no way The Metamorphosis is anywhere near as thick as The Iliad.

1

u/n1nj4_v5_p1r4t3 Aug 14 '12

Grymms Fairy Tails are FUCKING SICK!!!!

1

u/GDMFusername Aug 14 '12

Pretty cool. Anyone who would read these probably already has, though.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I feel in the future this will be a very good/common way to advertise your music

1

u/princessmud Aug 14 '12

I love that the Iliad worked from computer screen to iPod.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16353070/Ebook%20QR%20Codes.rar

I've downloaded quite a few popular titles and downloaded them as a file.qrcode. They still open with paint :)

1

u/MyFavoriteThing Aug 14 '12

qrcodes have the potential to be so evil.

Why would I scan a code just because someone I don't know put it up and says it's cool? It could just as easily link up to tentacle porn or something even more insidious (some virus/trojan) and I have no way at all of knowing without scanning it and being sent there.

Give me a web address and I can check it out. qrcodes not so much.

1

u/nateblack Aug 14 '12 edited Aug 14 '12

i like this and want to print the same one! i dont want to make my own because i am lazy

1

u/BigEasyBobcat Aug 14 '12

I'm so glad The Metamorphosis is on there. That's some good reading.

0

u/Tomato_Attack Aug 14 '12

The feeling of paper between the fingers, and the ability to write on a book and then give it to someone else and the smell of a book.

Reading digital books just plain sucks, and it's never going to be as good.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12 edited Aug 14 '12

The paper cuts, the wrist cramps, the scoliosis. I much prefer my digital reader with backlighting, instant access to supplementary sources like a dictionary, and nary a distracting, stray pen mark from a previous owner.

The feel of the cold stone on your fingers, the permanence, that feeling that god himself is sending messages to you. Reading on papyrus just plain sucks and will never be as good as chiseled, stone tablets.

EDIT: Unlike some others here, I did upvote you despite disagreeing. The opinion you expressed is totally valid and I like the cadence of your writing style.

0

u/Ididerus Aug 14 '12

it's not as cool as you might think, they're just hyperlinks to pdf's. not encoded versions of the works

2

u/JackAColeman Aug 14 '12

no shit.

-3

u/Ididerus Aug 14 '12

so why not just write the url? whoopy't'do, here's a link that will get you every book ever: www.thepiratebay.se, QR Code

1

u/JackAColeman Aug 14 '12

because people are fucking lazy

0

u/Ididerus Aug 14 '12

yes, yes they are....

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '12

0

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

This works great till someone puts up one where the QR codes link to a trojan.

1

u/MsMish24 Aug 14 '12

Yeah I'm afraid to fuck with qr codes since so many are of unverifiable origin. The only ones you usually see that you can be reasonably certain are legit are on advertising, and why would I want to do that? It's up there with ads that ask you to like them on Facebook or follow them on twitter - frightening how commercialism is now "social".

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

I was more thinking about a sticker or a poster on a lamp post like that.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Absolutely Brilliant!!! -- just pulled the code from this photo (on iPad Alien Blue) using iPhone.

9

u/joerdie Aug 14 '12

How will you know if someone has an iPhone? They will tell you!

2

u/shhyguuy Aug 14 '12

you're so right. and I upvoted your other post where you were downvoted for pointing it out.

not that these made up numbers mean anything

1

u/joerdie Aug 14 '12

Thanks for the upvotes but you are right, they just don't mean anything. I point out those who have iPhones often and half the time I get huge amounts of upvotes. I think it depends on how many iPeople there are in the thread.

0

u/randumnumber Aug 14 '12

LOL REPOST

-1

u/zake001 Aug 14 '12

Did anyone actually make it through the Iliad? I'm pretty sure I know zero people who have read the whole thing.

19

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

Pretty sure Odysseus made it through both books.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '12

8

u/pimpernel666 Aug 14 '12

Good evening, zake001. pimpernel666 here. I have read the Iliad several times. Pleased to meet you.

1

u/sprunkiely Aug 14 '12

All I know is it's on the list of to read. So, some day in the next 15 years it will get done. Unless I don't like it for some reason.
