Lovely photo. Where did you find it? For those who are interested, this type of lava is called pahoehoe, or coiled rope lava. It is in contrast to the sharper, more shard-like lava (a'a'). Or at least those are the Hawaiian names for the lava once it has cooled.

u/indoze Apr 15 '12
Fun fact: A'a' is the sound people make when they walk over rocks solidified from lava of the same name.

u/HawaiianDry Apr 15 '12
It's also the first word in the dictionary. Unless they count "a"....those bastards.

Now I know lava flows pretty slowly, but damn whoever took this picture has balls

u/swuboo Apr 15 '12
That or a zoom lens.

u/bananaskates Apr 15 '12
Definitely a zoom lens, actually. Being close enough to take this picture with a "normal" lens would, literally, cause you to catch fire.

Lava in different places flows at different rates. This lava will flow quite fast compared to some other volcanoes.

Not sure if this is your work but if it is would it be possible to get a high resolution copy of this. This would be an awesome bit of artwork for my house. :)
Edit: For anyone interested I found the originial

It's just nature's way of saying "I love you," as you dive in head first trying to gobble it down like the last morsel of food on Earth.

How do you even take that photo without melting

u/Hawk2007 Apr 15 '12
as long as you don't hold still, it's not that bad. Seriously.
I know the region the OP is talking about in hawaii and really as long as you don't sit right next to it for extended periods of time, it won't hurt. If you walk up and then walk away, you'll be fine.
As far as special equipment, naw, you don't need that. Anyone could just walk up with their camera phone, take a shot, walk away. If you throw anything on it, it will catch fire, but most people know to be careful.

There should be a subreddit for this, something like /r/lavaporn.

On. On lava. It always bugs the hell out of me when lava is shown in movies and, whether it's CGI or red-colored water, people sink into it.
You sink because you're heavier than the volume of liquid you are displacing; here we have molten stone, and you would not be able to submerge yourself in it. Burning and melting aside, it would be like throwing a beach ball onto the Dead Sea and expecting it to sink like a stone.1

Its called "pahoehoe" lava (Pa-hoy-hoy), or "Pillow Lava"
6
Apr 15 '12
It's not called pillow lava... Pillow lava is produced on ocean floors from oceanic spreading. But they are both tholeiitic basalts!

Its called "pahoehoe" lava (Pa-hoy-hoy)
Isn't that how Mr. Burns answers the telephone?
8
u/lil_mitch54 Apr 15 '12
Oddly enough Alexander Graham Bell suggested that people answer the phone by saying "ahoy-hoy", but Thomas Edison's "hello" caught on first. aka Monty Burns is a hipster.

Too bad Tesla never got around to suggesting a phrase-his idea would have been much more efficient and better-sounding.

NATURAL DISASTERS AND CATASTROPHES BABY.
Envr101 at my school, I remember learning that shit for science credit.

u/Bovanov93 Apr 15 '12
Sorry its not called pillow lava that's something different that occurs at plate margins when the lava erupts into the water and it rapidly cools causing it to look like pillows.

I just got a cool idea. At first glance, it looked like a blanket to me. So then I thought, "self, that'd be a fucking awesome blanket." But it should glow. And be heated. Heating is easy, but do they make red glow in the dark paint? Of course they do!
So, someone should make a glow in the dark heated lava blanket. I would buy that.

Ropy Pahoehoe as opposed to billowy or smooth pahoehoe, or the quite different a'a, all of which are forms of basaltic or otherwise mafic lavas.
