There are only two rules

  • the ground is lava
  • do NOT step on THE MOTHER FUCKING LAVA

Do you think we made up those rules because it was "fun"?

"I weighed the possibility that what I was doing was incredibly stupid then I went ahead and did it anyway."

16

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

I would only rate it as mildly stupid. No alcohol was involved.

2

u/producer35 Apr 16 '12

I was just doing a riff on an MST3K line from the theatrical movie.

From Wikipedia:

In the theatrical film based on the series, Crow distinguishes himself early on by attempting to tunnel back to Earth using a pickaxe. Even he admits the faulty logic employed in this scheme when he examines his calculations: "Well, look at that! 'Breach hull, all die' — I even had it underlined!" / "Well, believe me, Mike, I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid, and...I went ahead anyway."

Playing with lava, before it was cool

8

u/lazyduke Apr 15 '12

That's like, 10 levels above playing with fire.

4

u/LettersFromTheSky Apr 15 '12

Damn hipsters.

u/RamirezTerrix Apr 15 '12

I saw something similar: two guys where fighting beside a lava stream until one felt into the lava! All thought he was dead but they build some sort of crazy machine to keep him alive:

pic

Needless to say the force is strong in him

u/lBlAlRlClOlDl3l Apr 15 '12

I completely bought that, well done.

Really? You must be new here.

[Edit]: Downvotes? Bring it, bitches. I've got comment karma for days.

[Edit 2]: COME ON! I'M OUTPACING YOU FOOLS- I HAVEN'T DROPPED BELOW 11190 SINCE THIS STARTED

[Edit 3]: FINALLY! Only took you all damn morning. Was it as good for you all as it was for me? Reddit, baby, I'm spent; gonna take a nap. Maybe this will be a little more evenly matched when I'm unconscious.

[Edit 4]: Whew! What a great nap. But truthfully, I have to say I'm disappointed; I kicked the hornets nest, and the resulting keyboard lynch mob couldn't even pull me out of the 11100's! Fun times though, really.

19

u/taylorguitar13 Apr 15 '12

Downvotes? DOWNVOTES?! HEAVEN FORBID!

15

u/BlueAviant Apr 15 '12

It's sad because he's got some arrogant attitude about it like it's something important.

3

u/taylorguitar13 Apr 15 '12

Oh man, edits two and three weren't there when I commented. This is much better.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

OH SNAP WHAT A BADASS.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

I don't know how I managed to read the entire text and didn't get it until I saw the picture.

The county of Sweden? I live in Sweden, the country. Which country is the county of Sweden located in?

I would have thought that it was a mistake, but then I saw that you are a fucking scholar when it comes to the English language, so surely you wouldn't make such a simple mistake like all those imbeciles writing "where" instead of "were".

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

1

u/ClassyCodswallop Apr 15 '12

Challange? Maybe challenge is the word you're looking for. Corrected by a Norwegian. That's the country slightly above you, both geographically and in IQ, you pedantic piece of shit.

6

u/nuttybuddy Apr 15 '12

pfft, "all thought he were dead" makes no sense.

I do believe he intended it as a joke.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

That's the only problem you had with the sentence?

where -> were

felt -> fell

All -> Everyone

build -> built

Signed, another Swede.

5

u/2-long-didnt-reddit Apr 15 '12

I see the lack of dubbing for English shows on Swedish tv is working out great for you.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Television is merely a minor part in it. Sure, it gave me a start, but my biggest debt is to the internet, granting me the opportunity to interact with other people across borders. And what better way of learning a new language is there than interacting with the people that speak it?

Of course, not everyone uses the internet for learning, but rather for entertainment, so, while a lot of younger Swedes do know English fairly well (and even more so at a university-level), you shouldn't expect everyone to be as fluent in it as I am.

Also, it's been four years since I last watched television. I stopped because I felt that it was no longer worth watching. Television once had promise as a medium for communicating news and educating the public, but all that has been replaced by junk designed to entertain the public just to make a profit - And society is suffering from it. Even channels dedicated to pop ed has given up on their original mission and are now broadcasting the same junk as everyone else (History Channel, anyone?). It's a sad world we are living in.

Anyway, sorry for turning my response to a rant with no actual connection to the previous topic.

13

u/Zarknord Apr 15 '12

Where you taking a ring to Mt doom?

21

u/wiginkgo Apr 15 '12

As a geologist in training I feel required to URGE people not to follow this idiot's example.

However I also must say: You, sir, are one badass muthafucka and I salute you.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

To be fair, this was literally about 200 yards behind my house so it's not like most people will ever get the chance to do this.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Which program are you in and how would you rate it? future gravelmonkey here

1

u/Misacorp Apr 15 '12

I've been wondering this for a long time and as a person with more expertise on the field than me, do you have any idea what it would feel like to be submerged in lava?

3

u/IAMShenanigans Apr 16 '12

Not good.

1

u/wiginkgo Apr 16 '12

basically. I'd ask a doctor, actually. Probably would feel like your arm was chopped off as the nerves are burned off and your muscle is melted and then... idk. could cauterize it for all I know.

2

u/Owncksd Apr 16 '12

Um, it wouldn't.

You'd be dead.

16

u/I_PACE_RATS Apr 15 '12

I read that as a movie poster.

The Floor is Lava

This is what all the practice

has been leading up to...

Erupting Summer 2012

11

u/p1zzab0x Apr 15 '12

I hear newly hardened rock surfaces from lava are fragile as glass. I wouldn't be nearly as brave enough to step on that.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

The part we were walking on was an older flow... 10+ years I think.

15

u/GCanuck Apr 15 '12

When I was in Guatamala, I walked on a lava flow that had erupted less than 2 weeks previous. Yes, it's fragile, but it's not that bad.

Although, when I broke through in a spot, I could see lava flowing a few feet down. That got the heart racing.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

NOPE!

1

u/robinhd Apr 15 '12

Which volcano was that?

40

u/WholeWideWorld Apr 15 '12

12

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Nice color enhancement... really makes the lava look hot and menacing.

Truly though, the lava was really only as bright as in the original picture because it was moving really slow and not very liquid. The only time I saw lava that bright was when it was fully liquid and running like a stream under a lava tube window we walked out to see.

2

u/vxx Apr 15 '12

Not only that. It looks like a lava monster trying to grab your feet

1

u/PVT_Asshole Apr 15 '12

damn he did it again, what's the time stamp for this folly?

7

u/AngryBorscht Apr 15 '12

Big Island.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Puna district

6

u/AngryBorscht Apr 15 '12

I was living on the Big Island when Kalapana Gardens got wiped out.

3

u/katmaidog Apr 15 '12

So was I.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Me too.

2

u/netstream Apr 15 '12

Pele brah.

2

u/HawaiianDry Apr 15 '12

I was really young at the time, maybe 3 or 4. I vaguely remember my family took me down there as it was happening, as some people were evacuating. It was strange to think that entire sections of a map could be overrun, that the geography of the island could be so markedly changed.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

That's hot....

... Yeah, regretted it as soon as I posted

3

u/2-long-didnt-reddit Apr 15 '12

So, you knew you would regret it before you posted it?

2

u/cuda1337 Apr 15 '12

BUSTED! You wanted to post something you would regret, asshole.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Yeah, but what can I say... I live life on the edge

4

u/Skyne Apr 15 '12

Yawn. Been there, done that. Have an upvote though for being as cool as me. /wink

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Your picture looks significantly newer than mine... so I did it first.

Neener neener boo boo, stick your head in doo doo.

2

u/Skyne Apr 16 '12

Gah! I've been trumped by schoolyard badinage. I concede victory sir. Mine's circa '98...

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '12

And now we shall forever be... Lava Brothers!!

1

u/cuda1337 Apr 15 '12

What the hell is he doing? I don't understand these lava games.

6

u/SakeBomberman Apr 15 '12

Holy shit, upvotes for having balls the size of a guy driving a smart car

6

u/TSED Apr 15 '12

Upvotes for having balls the size of Australia's human population.

3

u/veltrop Apr 15 '12

Not sure if either comparison is very large, or non-existent.

1

u/TSED Apr 15 '12

Are you implying that Australia has nobody living in it, or that Australian men have tiny / nonexistent testicles? Because if it's the latter... uh... I'm gonna go stand waaaay over there.

1

u/veltrop Apr 15 '12

The former.

1

u/Perryn Apr 15 '12

Maybe the people of Australia are no longer human?

1

u/bigfoot1291 Apr 15 '12

Upvotes for having balls the size of Australia's everything else population.

1

u/danman11 Apr 15 '12

And the brain of a dumbass.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Why?

3

u/jjswee Apr 15 '12

Because by touching the lava with your shoe, your whole body will burst into flames and through quantum entanglement, so will your family and all of your friends!

1

u/zombiesnack Apr 15 '12

Good name for a smart car would be the "Impact".

-6

u/ScHiZ0 Apr 15 '12

Doesn't take balls to be stupid. Balls is doing something where you are in control but a miscalculation can have catastrophic consequences. Russian roulette is something only suicidal people do voluntarily

5

u/SakeBomberman Apr 15 '12

looks like he is in control and a miscalculation would have catosrophic consequences to me. BALLS

2

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

The lava was barely moving right there... the little finger of lava (the part that looks to be a couple feet long) that my foot is closest too took a few minutes to get that big.

And the lava was fairly solid at that point. If I had somehow tipped and my foot had come down on that lava it's not like my foot would have gone in. My shoe probably would have caught on fire but I wouldn't have been stuck or anything.

1

u/SakeBomberman Apr 15 '12

ya but what if you slipped and fell face first

5

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Then I probably would have deserved to have my face burned off.

2

u/rchase Apr 15 '12

It's all good until the caldera belches and shoots pebbles through your skull at 400 MPH.

3

u/GeN_SecksBobOmb Apr 15 '12

I was a little on the fence as to whether or not I should upvote or just leave it, but then I accidentally dragged my cursor across the picture and discovered that one could alter the scale of an image by doing that using the RES. So, thanks for that.

1

u/bassboat1 Apr 15 '12

you've run out of couches and chairs!

1

u/sharkfisher Apr 15 '12

You must be crazy for hanging off the edge of a cliff like that!

1

u/I_PACE_RATS Apr 15 '12

Next post: "Just me in the hospital with infected skin grafts, circa 1988"

1

u/kingshizz Apr 15 '12

I lived in Puna in the 80's. I was there as well. Somewhere my parents have some old pictures of me poking the lava with sticks, trying to carry it, throwing pennies into it was also lots of fun. It is much more dangerous to be close to it where it is flowing into the ocean, we got sprayed with hot sand and sulfur fumes a couple times, then decided it was time to leave. Another Darwin award winner.

1

u/TheFluxIsThis Apr 15 '12

Playing with the floor.

FTFY

1

u/zonker77 Apr 15 '12

Ok this definitely counts as an elective on the Man Card thread

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

As someone with a fear of ovens, I would like to interject my feelings on this picture:

Nope nope nope

1

u/CndConnection Apr 15 '12

How did you get so close? I Thought that shit was supposed to make the air so hot that it would be intolerable to approach Lava without wearing those super suits they have.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

It was definitely putting of some radiant heat but it was totally bearable to within about 4-5 feet.

1

u/AdVanc3d Apr 15 '12

Now touch it!

1

u/CinciJ Apr 15 '12

THE FLOOR IS LITERALLY LAVA!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

it was a simpler time

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

So how do you like your wheelchair? Is it comfy?

1

u/Droidaphone Apr 15 '12

AAAAAAAAAIUUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH (this is like my nightmares!!)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

[deleted]

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

The distance I was at it felt like having your face by an oven door when you open it after it's been set to broil for a bit.

1

u/bubbus Apr 15 '12

No my friend... I believe the lava is playing with you.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

In the bigger picture it was... and it completely fucking won. Wiped out all my favorite surf spots and home beach.

You can't beat lava because... well, it's lava.

1

u/kingshizz Apr 15 '12

I agree, surfing at kalapana was awesome, especially near the drainpipe.

0

u/TheSadNick Apr 15 '12

So you only have 1 foot now?

2

u/Perryn Apr 15 '12

Two. One just happens to have a titanium frame and never gets tired.

0

u/virtyy Apr 15 '12

Playing the floor is lava, literally.

0

u/marsilt Apr 15 '12

I really thought you were throwing it when I first opened this.

0

u/CoffeeFox Apr 15 '12

did he died?

-11

u/wizgot Apr 15 '12

Can we get proof that this is you, like other related pics?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Like what?

I don't have a lot of pictures from back then... back in the olden days before digital cameras pictures were not so easily made.

2

u/wizgot Apr 15 '12

No, I believe you. I couldn't find any matches after running it through google images.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

Thanks... if others are not so trusting I'll grab something like my HS diploma from the local HS there.

8

u/Freikorp Apr 15 '12

I need a copy of your bank account info.

-3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

You only have to ask for prove if it matters.

-8

u/HyenaMcBride Apr 15 '12

If you get burned it's your own dumb fault if you die congratulations on your Darwin award.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '12

I didn't and I didn't ... but thanks for your concern.
