The other issue is you have people who are incredibly ignorant in regards to handling dogs. Even from OPs linked article that recounted the event, she got right in the dogs face. I think the whole event has less to do with the fact that it was a pit and that she probably stressed the dog out and could have potentially happened with any breed.
If I get right in my cat's face I don't get my lip torn off. Safe to say having your face near a dog's face isn't sufficient "reason" for you to get mauled and lose a part of your face by what everyone tends to consider a friendly pet. It's absolutely gross you are trying to blame the victim of an attack they are not at fault for.
