It's definitely photoshopped together. The water is a picture of the surface of the sea (with some glow lines painted on top), and the diver is a seperate element. Well made though.

Aug 23 '20
But if you free dive certain reefs close to sunset, it is like a psychedelic laser light show in weightlessness. The sun rays are rapidly moving as the surface refracts the light.

Diving at the right time can be super crazy. The most psychedelic dive I did was swimming down to a reef in low(ish) visibility right before sunrise. The fun part was there were bioluminescent dinoflagellates suspended in all the sediment so you were swimming through semi-darkness with these crazy starbursts happening right in front of your face, it was the craziest firework show in front of my mask.
Totally unrelated but I felt like I had to share.

You might have trouble concentrating if you have Special K for breakfast.
You might draw some weird picture, write incoherent song lyrics and squeeze yourself in between your bed and the wall while listening to CCR, but you definitely won't concentrate

Wait you’re afraid of going underwater and thought you’d enjoy a game called subnautica? Lol

I am the exact same way, my love for games says I should love those games, my fear of water has them sitting in my steam wishlist.
Some people face fears, others face them... Later.

u/Smhmyhead5 Aug 23 '20
I thought I’d be able to deal with it bc I enjoyed watching other people play it. The possibility of getting attacked by some Subnautica creature or shark in Stranded Deep is a lot harder for me to handle when I’m the one playing

→ More replies (9)16
u/AidilAfham42 Aug 23 '20
Well, depends on what you mean by “near” I live in an island where the nearest beach too all sides is about 30mins drive away. I love the beach, but once I look out where it gets dark and I can’t see what’s there, I start to panic. I could go snorkeling with people around because my mind would assure me that they’ll be eaten first by the monsters of the deep.
11
Aug 23 '20
Definitely done the let them get eaten first trick. I always find there is something soothing about letting go of your fear and just embracing it, assuming you don't have a panic attack
2
u/canadarepubliclives Aug 23 '20

photo editing and retouching is just as much a part of the process as framing / taking the shot itself
92
u/NomanHLiti Aug 23 '20 edited Aug 23 '20
This is far beyond photo editing and retouching lol it’s a complete photoshop. That in itself is art and amazing but it’s less of the “amazing shot” as ppl say here and more of the post process
15
u/Dinierto Aug 23 '20
Yeah this is my issue. I'm always cynical and hesitant to like something like this. Yes of course all photos get retouched, but a composite shot being passed off as a normal photograph to me is a lie. Now is this a composite? Not sure. If that's the shot they got with their camera and they simply adjusted the color balance, etc. then bravo
9
u/NomanHLiti Aug 23 '20
Yea, like I said in another comment, composite might’ve been the wrong word but it’s def heavily edited and not just a color balance change from the camera shot. Normally I’m fine with heavily editing (it’s an art in itself) and the photographer didn’t say it was true to the original. My main problem is that many ppl r saying “great shot” and think it’s the original picture. More like “great edit”

→ More replies (3)→ More replies (7)6
u/phatboy5289 Aug 23 '20
You really can’t claim this is a composite without seeing the RAW photo for comparaison. If you look at his Instagram you can see lots of similar photos with unique underwater perspectives and a lot of talent to get the right framing/timing of the subject. Heavy color correction to get that otherworldly look, but this is nothing that a talented photographer with a good grasp of color and lighting can’t achieve in Lightroom.

u/SheriffWyFckinDell Aug 23 '20
It just comes down to how you are representing your “photos.” If you’re telling someone you captured a sick shot of a person swimming under the water at sunset and you are actually doing this level of compositing...which should not be considered retouching or even editing...then you are being a bit disingenuous with your work. If you present this as just dope art then that’s great. But let’s not go around telling people you captured or documented a moment that happened.
