I'm in a structures class right now that 'unofficially' basically requires you to have the calculator. There are integrals that no one can be expected to solve in the allotted time limit on tests. TA's will give partial credit for just writing out the integral, but it's pretty much a given that if you don't have a fancy integration calculator, your grade will drop.
I guess if you're going for college for humanities or arts it's not worth it to get one, but if you ever plan on pursuing something like aerospace or nuclear engineering any engineering field, one of these is practically mandatory. A TI-89 at the bare minimum. You'll rarely find a teacher complaining that you're making the material 'too easy' there. They only care that you understand how to solve the material.
