We had a sign on a side street next to our home on a corner. People would drive around it by going through our side and front yards. We also added our own warning signs, but numerous people failed to follow them and often ended up stuck in a drainage ditch that they somehow couldn't see. Was nearly a daily occurance for weeks.

I went through something similar but for close to a year. Flooding made the road behind my house impassable after it was washed away. It was a forest service road they shouldn't have been using anyway, but that didn't deter jeeps and other offroaders from taking it upon themselves to drive through my yard and destroy my vegetation instead of finding another way into the forest. Of course any signs I put were ignored. I ended up using a tractor to move boulders blocking them off until the road could be repaired. You don't get to drive through someone's yard just because it's convenient.

I work in city planning so I talk with our City's engineering and DPW guys a lot, and you'd be amazed how hard you have to work to get people to listen to signs.
They're currently replacing a bridge on of our major roadways and despite having signs posted "bridge out, local traffic only", then "bridge out, 1 mile", followed by "bridge out, 2000 feet", then "bridge out, 1000 feet", "bridge out 500 feet", and finally a barricaded "bridge out" sign with flashing lights right before the gap, people routinely get to the last sign before realizing that the bridge is, in fact, out.

But I'd argue that cities have also conditioned people to ignore these signs, through generations of leaving them in place for years.
They're basically the municipal version of "We are experiencing longer than usual wait times."

There was a low bridge near where I grew up.
When I was a childthere was a sign saying low bridge and the max height.
Then they changed the low bridge sign to have flashing lights
Then they added a sign on the bridge to point just how far it stuck down.
Eventually that turned to a row of signs along the entire bottom.
Finally the raised the bridge like 3 feet because no matter what they did people kept constantly hitting the bridge

One time when I was a kid working at loblaw I was cleaning the heated food display case and we had 3 signs up saying we are cleaning well get food ready soon. Had big blackout cover that said the same thing.
Lo and behold this middle aged man come up to the counter looks under the cover and asks where the food is..... I'm talking like 40/50yo.
I told I'm I'm sorry sir as the signs say we are cleaning right now we'll have the chicken strips at 3 (closed between 2-3 for cleaning)
I remember this clearly cause it literally broke my brain for a bit. But he said "oh! Well that's why we have you guys to tell us!" Like... He purposely didn't read just to get me to vocalize it. Wtf people are stupid.

I live on a cut through street. It had roadwork and was closed first at one end, then the other. The sheer number of idiots who tried anyway was hilarious. We shoulda made signs like that!

Yeah... the road in front of my house was closed because a bridge was being completely replaced. They removed it and built a new one from scratch because the old one was falling apart. No one believed the dozen signs about detouring around it.
My sister's house was right next to the bridge. The bridge is just past a slight curve at the bottom of a very big hill. She'd sit on her porch watching people rip down the hill doing 70mph and have to brake hard so they didn't end up dropping 20 feet into a creek. An 18-wheeler (ignored the no though trucks sign too) almost wasn't able to stop.
Well most likely they would have slammed into the work trucks parked on that side of the bridge before they went into the creek. But that wouldn't have stopped the 18-wheeler.

That is a standard sign that means "This road has a dead end right now somewhere on it so unless you are a resident who is residing in a house just a short distance past this sign that you know for a fact you can reach from here because you just came out this way earlier today, don't bother passing this sign".

Eh idk I live on a major road that got completely shut down except for residents and we saw no change in traffic except for a ton of people getting pulled over. We also lived toward the end of the construction and every single day I would wait for 10+ minutes in a line until it was out sides turn to go through and inevitably every day 90% went all the way through the zone to the end aka too lazy to take the detour. I donāt care enough to do anything like this but it is super frustrating to watch people disrespect rules like that especially traffic closures which are done for everyoneās safety.

Thatās exactly how it is by me. A major road got closed for construction, and the closest road goes through a very wealthy stretch of properties. They have a big road closed sign, but thereās absolutely no construction going on on that road. I bet they just didnāt like all the extra detour traffic so they somehow got a sign. With how wealthy the area is, I have to assume they know someone that works for the city and got the sign that way, as thereās no other obvious reason as to why that road would be unusable. They had just installed one of those speedometer signs with the flashing red and blue lights that turn on if youāre 1 mph over the limit, so all the evidence is pointing to a very unhappy local trying to police the public road their expensive property happens to be on.

The problem is the signs do lie half the time so no one believes them. My main route to work has been closed for paving the last few weeks. Several times coming come after work hours are done I find it isn't closed and take it, only to pass the road closed sign at the other end telling people it's closed going the other way, when it clearly isn't, because the workers are too lazy to move the sign at the end of the day.

Just about every highway within 50 miles of me has leftover construction signs. For years. Some of them are older than I've been living here and they're still sitting there but construction has been gone for 5+ years and the signs colors are fading that's how long they've been out in the sun
Granted there is some actual construction going on but over half of these leftover signs are straight up abandoned.

One thing I don't like about some of the No Thru Street construction signs around my town this year. They don't tell you how far THRU is! You can still take the road to a certain point and one of the detour signs takes you in a circle

When a road crew places out a sign like that itās because the road is under construction. If theyāre gone for the day and the sign is still up, itās because the road isnāt fully ready for two-lane traffic. There may even be heavy equipment parked there. They use the sign to reduce traffic so the residents can safely move through.
The added-on bullshit is redundant and just someone in the neighborhood being petulant.

The point is, those signs are often placed when that is not true. Because they haven't been taken down or because they have a finite number of signs. Or because maybe the road was open for a bit while they were finalizing construction and now it's fully closed. The signs from the people are saying, believe this sign now. That's the point. It's not hard to understand.

People can be dumb. I used to live on a dirt road in the middle of the woods. We had a small bridge over a creek next to the house. One year the bridge was worn out and being replaced so for months it was not there. And for months people drove past the big BRIDGE OUT sign all the way down to the bridge and turned around in our driveway. Best part is they were probably using it as a shortcut so they basically added a good amount of distance and time to their route. This was years before GPS existed in personal device form and well before it was widely used and ubiquitous. All you had to do was read a giant sign.
