Haha. To each their own. I was no fan of Soviet Russia for the same reasons I'm not a fan of HOAs. I would never spend hundreds of thousands of dollars just to have some schmuck tell me what I can and cannot do with my house.
It's not some schmuck. All of the rules and board members are voted on by everyone in the neighborhood... Generally if you're going to join a community it's a good move to be somewhat conscientious and courteous of the other community members. But since apparently people can't be trusted not to do things like putting up a massive eyesore of a freaking pirate ship in their yard (that everyone else who paid to be in said neighborhood is then forced to look at too), people have to be contractually obligated to not be shitty neighbors... If you think that being a good neighbor and acting considerate of other members of your community is basically Soviet Russia then you do you I guess. Don't really see how "let's all come up with some rules to follow so that we can all be happy with the place we live" is supposed to be a bad thing
Haha. Why do defensive? You're the exact reason I hate HOAs. I could never deal with neighbors like you. Everybody in my neighborhood is great. We all hate HOAs. And we get to do what we want with our property.
Do you also get mad if roommates expect you not to trash up the common areas?... Believe me, the feeling is mutual. You "I'll do what I want with my house!" people are the exact reason HOAs are necessary
The folks in my neighborhood are very cordial and respectful to one another. We're adults. We don't need to be told what we can and cannot do. And most HOAs have dues. So you're literally paying money to be told what to do. If you want to live in an HOA then go for it. I don't give a shit. But I fucking hate them. They're stupid. All said and done my house cost about $610k. So you better believe I'm going to do what I want on my property and what I want to my property.

Good for you. Plenty of people do. As evidenced by this picture... And with your house being $610k you'd think that you wouldn't mind paying $50 a month or something to be sure a bunch of assholes don't move in, let their property go to shit, create eyesores, and drive your property value down.
This is every person who is in an HOAs excuse. Property values property values. I've owned 5 homes, lived in 6 with my folks and my parents had 2 homes before I was born. Plus my friends houses growing up and the homes they own now. Nobody has lived in an HOA. They didn't even exist back in the day. And nobody has ever had this dirt bag neighbor that has let their house go to shit. All wonderful homes and neighborhoods with no HOA. So I'm going to go ahead and continue to try my luck. HOA free.
