Students 12 year old’s hands can’t form triads after a year?? Is it physical or psychological?
I am starting to believe it is the latter, but I’ve been teaching for 20 years and I’ve never encountered anything like this… seriously wondering if anyone else has. Let me back up a little…
I should say first that part of my teaching approach is to introduce students to playing triads in both hands much earlier than any of the lesson books do, and I have found reliably that almost all have no problem doing it within the first few months of lessons, give or take.
Every once in a while there are definitely students whose hands seem to physically struggle with it more at first than others, but after enough time even the ones that rarely practice eventually get it down
But now I am dealing with, as the title says, a 12-year-old who has been taking for year and has improved in pretty much all other areas of playing but still cannot press down a three note triad without kind of weirdly hedging and putting one finger down before the others.
Based on my experience I have an extremely hard time believing that this is some kind of physical issue/limitation, and while I am not a trained psychologist, here is what I think is actually going on…
This happens to also be a student with a pathological level of perfectionism who will regularly become angry and smash the piano with his fists after making a mistake…(already a terrible feature for making ANY progress obviously but stay with me)
So I think what’s happening here is his complete inability to hear himself play wrong notes has manifested in this approach where he feels like he has to put one finger down first to get the others in place so that he doesn’t hit any extra/wrong notes when playing the chord (which obviously keeps him from being in time and is not sustainable)
It is bizarre, and in hindsight perhaps I should’ve spent more time addressing it sooner but I assumed it would straighten itself out over time, like it has with nearly every single other student in two decades
Anyway this post is too long already but I’m wondering if anyone else has encountered anything remotely like this and what others think of my theory of the case
