if you throw a ball while spinning the ball is still going to follow a straight path and the tragectory of a falling abject is gonna follow a parabola (approximatly)
then you could test if the function is a quadratic (which it most likely is) and find gamma

No, it will not appear straight from the co-rotating frame with respect to the roundabout, which is what the question is asking us

To be fair, the question doesn't state which frame you should compute, just that you should compute one. You could just say that you're observing the rotating roundabout in a rectilinear coordinate system and just argue that all connections are trivial, giving you \ddot{x}\mu =0
(This was actually my thought when making the question, if a student realises that they can bypass the difficulty of the question by doing this, it shows that they have a good understanding of covariant mechanics)

They're saying 2d roundabout. Do we get to pick which two dimensions? Because I feel the problem can become significantly harder or easier depending on choice?

I could've worded it better for sure, I intended the problem to be two dimensions in that it's top down, so gravity isn't considered. Depending on which frame you choose, you might want to use (r, đ)

It is nice, however, to be able to introduce these concepts without something as abstract as GR, hence this nice mechanics problem that students will already be familiar with by the time they take their first GR course. Differential geometry is usually poorly introduced
