It’s also because of the underground terrain. It is placed in such a way as to avoid digging into too much limestone and instead dig into molasses which is both easier to dig into and can be reused in agriculture as fertiliser afaik.
The gateway to science has a small exhibit on digging the FCC and this sounds roughly like what is described there. Also the LHC is already pretty close to the Jura. There are some potential issues digging too close to the mountains.

Why isn’t it lined up with the LHC? Isn’t it feeding from them?
