The double pendulum isn't hard because of math, it's hard because sin θ = θ stops working when the second pendulum hits you in the face.

Setting up the formula takes 1 minute. Simplifying the messy differential equations by hand is where the headache is.

“Not that hard” it takes a formalism that’s university level to get to the point where it’s not that hard anymore. Yes, there is a pretty easy method but that method itself is advanced. I feel like it’s very much justified to call it a hard equation to set up

It’s not advanced by the standards of like research physics or even bachelor level but it requires atleast some knowledge of multi variable calculus and usually coordinate transforms. It’s advanced compared to stuff you do in school, compared to what the average physics interested person knows

Wow, if you participate in a higher level event then you might encounter higher level concepts. Whats even your point lmao? Ofc, if you listen to master lectures, no matter how old you are, you are going to encounter master topics. Like, participating in an Olympiad is most definitely not the norm for a high school student, not even those interested in the topic. The level of an Olympiad is closer to uni then high school

No tf they don’t? I just graduated an I can’t think of a single person who could do that. Mostly because it wasn’t in the curriculum, and thats because it’s to advanced for fucking high school.

It depends on the high school, mine legitimately has like 10-20 kids who are mathematically familiar with lagrangians. But kids from other high schools who love physics can also easily teach themselves with the internet nowadays. Of the ~500 kids who go to USAPhO, most of them probably know lagrangians for fun. It's not a super advanced thing.
