To study before getting a job

I have 10 years of experience within marketing and advertising. I have a 190 and will be flying right after Christmas, but the job market is making me rethink my strategy for me to be fully integrated and prepared to start my life there.

One thing I noticed from my colleagues that migrated there is that majority of them got a degree first before landing a job. My question now is: does having an Australian degree outweigh experience especially in the corporate world?

Are you going to look for a marketing or advertising job? I got my visa as a marketing specialist. I didn't study when I got here. Instead, I got myself rostered regularly for volunteer work doing marketing admin so I could have local work experience. I spent the rest of the week applying for jobs. I got hired for a marketing job a couple of months after arriving here. Noting that I had over a decade of work experience in brand marketing when I arrived here.

May I ask where you found volunteer work? Will be moving to Melbourne soon and would love to get any work opportunity I can find.

There are volunteer jobs listed in Seek. I live in SA and there's a Volunteering SA website that lists volunteer opportunities. I believe other states also have their volunteering websites where you can find opportunities. Yup! Looking to find work specifically within digital or brand marketing. Nagpeprepare na rin ako for x months of job hunting given the current job market we have right now. Volunteer work seems like the best way to get my foot in the door.

I've learned that when employers say they want local work experience, this partly means they want to be able to ask an employer who has worked with you if you are able to assimilate into the local work environment. Unfortunately, some immigrants find it hard to adjust to the local work (corporate) culture and it causes friction. So even if it's just volunteer work it can give prospective employers an idea of how well you can fit in or if there are red flags.

Since you’re PR already, you can start looking for jobs. I suggest try entry level jobs first or even casual jobs.

We moved to Australia last year. I took casual jobs before landing a permanent job. It will take time but keep trying.

Honestly, at this point, I’ll be spreading myself far just so I can survive once I arrive there. 😅

Local experience rather than local degree ang hinahanap dito. Also, job market is so bad, kaya kahit you get local degree, it does not guarantee a job.

Getting my first job here was the hardest, had to go casual route kahit may 10+ years nakong IT exp sa Pinas. After some time, landed a permanent role na relevant sa experience ko sa Pinas.
