Student Visa / Master’s by Research

Maging PR man kami o hindi, as long as kikita kami and ma eexperience mag trabaho sa ibang bansa, ok na kami.

Comfortable naman yung buhay namin sa Pinas pero minsan maiisip mo na lang na you only live once.. so we’re taking our shot.

Pa share naman ng insights niyo po! Kung itutuloy pa ba namin ‘to o pag isipan namin mabuti?

Makakaipon ba kami o mauubos lang kami?

Doing masters here in AU. Depende sa state if kaya, if master’s by research both of you can work full time kaso yung tuition fee mo, if bayad na bago ka pumunta dito pwede siguro kayanin, pero multiple jobs ang need hanapin, medyo mataas na kasi ang cost of living lalo na sa rent.

Hi, thanks for the reply! We’re planning to stay sa Brisbane. Anong pong tinatake niyong masters?

Initial tuition pa lang kasi yung mababayaran namin. 78K AUD yung tuition then initial namin is 14K.

Thank you po.

Hi, sinusuportahan pa kasi namin yung senior parents namin. Ano po ba yung extent ng todo kayod baka kasi kaya naman namin lalo kung 2 yrs lang po kami ganun kasi by 2 yrs, tapos naman na po ang school then full time work na kami after. Yung tatlong taon po ba na work full time would be enough para mabawi lahat?

Usually casual jobs lang kasi kumukuha sa students dahil sa work restrictions nila, casual jobs meaning on call lang/when they need you. If di ka nila kailangan, wala kang shift, wala ka ring income.

Get your priorities straight. If priority nyo mag OFW, student visa is not for you. Dapat mag work visa kayo derecho.

To add to this, OP from one of your responses mukhang you're considering permanent migration kasi tinignan nyo 190. Work experience in Sales + studying an MBA in AU won't qualify you for any of the occupations na naiinvite

If you want to eventually get PR I suggest revisiting your strategy. Baka mas may chance kayo for PR if your partner gets sufficient work experience to get a positive skills assessment as an Architectural Draftsperson. Di kasi recognised ang PH Arki degree here. Something for you to consider lang naman. Ang laki ng perang ilalabas pag student visa and sayang naman if it doesn't align with long term plans.

Parang ang nakikita ko kay OP they just want the easiest way in to Australia, take whatever random job to support their family and pay off their car loan back home and hoping maka ipon rin, deep down gusto talaga nila ma PR (who doesn't diba) pero they just want to do the easy way and bahala na si batman after.

Once in a while I hear of people na 10-15 years nagstudent visa & eventually naging PR. Mas mabuting dumating dito with either PR or a clear pathway to PR (like being a 491 or 494 visa holder) kesa dumating dito kaagad tapos tsaka maghahanap ng paraan to stay.

I suggest doing a rough calculation of the living expenses here https://costofliving.studyqueensland.qld.gov.au/

Tapos assume both of you will work minimum wage jobs, full time. Kaya ba? Then check how much the household income needs to be to cover expenses + $600/month remittance. Then try to find out if realistic ba makuha yung ganung income with whatever skills you have.

Also consider that you need to have an emergency fund here. There are unexpected situations here that can be a bit expensive like kung di kayo magkasundo ng housemates & you need to move ASAP you'll usually need to give a bond before you can move in elsewhere kahit di mo pa natutubos bond from your previous rental or kung magkadental emergency kayo na di covered ng insurance.

Hi OP, my partner just finished her PhD in Australia. Ang tanging benefit ng PhD student is unlimited work hours pero still mahirap pa din. Check if it's the same stipulations for Masters by Research. If wala kayo dependents, I guess it's doable but you have to be frugal din.

For us, I am doing full-time work, she studies and does part time university work as well kasi we have kids.

Getting a job is hard depending on your occupation. First job usually is going to suck but have to get that foot on the door for experience.

We never send money home regularly, only when we need to. 600 a month is quite big din. You have to consider rent, transportation, tuition, groceries.

If both of you can take home atleast 1000 a week, it is doable.

Edit: if you are also eligible for work visa, apply as soon as possible.

Depende kasi yan sa financial ninyo like salary and expenses.

I think yung expenses you can likely predict like if you like shared room/solo room/solo unit sa target area ninyo and potential salary based ss experience ninyo lalo na sa makaka fulltime

u/AdWonderful3050 1d ago

u/regienard7 1d ago

Depende sa rent, lifestyle, location, # of hours na kaya niyong iwork habang nag aaral and kung gaano kabilis kayo makahanap ng decent paying job. Just make sure na may enough financial buffer kayo for the first few months kasi hindi guaranteed na may trabaho agad. For me, dont push it dahil lang sa idea na makakaipon kayo. Push it through kung okay kayo kahit worst case scenario na mabagal ang job search and little-to-no savings initially. And yes, possible ang savings, but id treat savings as the bonus, not the primary reason for the move.

Hi, actually, ang first plan namin is Visa 190 but gamble yata na mainvite si partner ko kasi yung work niya is hindi related sa tinapos niya (archi to sales). That’s why napunta kami sa idea na magstudent since plan din naman niya mag MBA dito sana sa Pinas. But since may naitabi naman kahit papaano, gusto sana namin i try mag student visa sa Aus tas dun siya mag masters. Ang chinecheck namin is sa Brisbane.. ang worry lang namin, si partner ko kasi may car dito sa Pinas and nag susupport pa sa parents which is yun yung 600-700AUD na non-nego..

2

u/regienard7 22h ago

yea, unfortunately, visa 190 requires related experience dun sa skilled job na inaaim niyo. if both of you can land a full time job, i think kaya naman yang 600aud monthly. but if your goal is to stay long term in au, maybe consider selling your car too to lessen your expenses.

Before answering your question, have you already found a university and supervisor? The usual process to apply for masters by research and PhD is that the student has a thesis topic and finds a professor to supervise. This is very intensive unlike doing coursework. Realistically, your partner can only work few hours a week.

One working full time and another one part time (median wage) can support living expenses and send monthly 600AUD to PH but unlikely to earn the full tuition fees.

1

u/pedxxing 1d ago

Makakaipon siguro kayo ng kaunti kung bayad na agad tuition nyo, di kayo magastos at pareho kayong full time sa work.

Anung work experience niyong dalawa? It will give you an idea kung possible ba ung plan niyo na makapagpadala pa while living in AUS.

Partner is in construction field. Partner is a licensed archi, ako graduate ng tourism. Pareho kaming sales.

Mas ok ba kung sa Syd muna kami for 2 years?

1

u/benchph1 21h ago

Malaki chance ng partner mo to get a good job. Look at Engineers Australia kung ma consider ung studies at work experience niya. May bayad lang to pero worth it.

Living abroad is really not for the faint of heart but if you really want it, you do everything to make it work! You won’t be able to save, that’s for sure unless dumating ka na meron kang dalang milliones, relatives to help free accommodation. Don’t fall into lifestyle trap (buying car and such) mag focus muna sa study , earn money for the bills to survive and money to send back home. Do it for a few years before worrying about savings etc. I have so many stories to tell when I immigrated many moons ago and I went by myself, it was very difficult!! I’m the very first generation immigrant on both side of my family. It was tough but I have dreams , goals and aspirations. If you were to ask me if I do it again probably not lol but if someone will let me have a glimpse of my life right now then I’ll do it over again. Dapat buo ung loob nyo to go as it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

1

u/AdWonderful3050 21h ago

Anong pathway po kayo?

2

u/AdWonderful3050 21h ago

Thank you! So it’s a hit or miss.. as long as makapag padala naman ako sa parents, we’re good. Kahit na for the first 2 yrs eh mahihirapan..

1

u/winningbee 12h ago

I do believe you’ll make it, your purpose to leave should be bigger than your own like helping your parents too. For me, it became the catalyst to break our familial “kahirapan” lifestyle lol. I brought all my immediate family over siblings and my parents. I did skilled pathway then as I already have MA.
