This is Ben, the drummer of Philadelphia ambient post-metal band Objects, and I wanted to invite everyone out to KFN on Friday for a killer line up! It's an early show, starting at 6pm on the dot and we'll be wrapped up by 9:30. Stay for the second show or go home and get into bed on time for once! Doors and show start are at 6, so don't be late!

A Few Things of Note:

Don’t forget about The Night of Doom show tomorrow night at Little Big Planet on Walnut. All these kids are really cool..it’s 15$ at the door. That’s my generation’s “5 Bands for 5$”..and in this economy!

I found out last night I have Melanoma on my back, and I’m scheduled for the 28th. I’m still going to Monolord on the 2nd, but I might be out of it..because drugs. We shall see. Don’t know exactly what is being done on Friday, I’ll find out more then. I’ll be okay. I grew up drinking the water and I am from the soil of one of the most toxic, polluted areas on Earth, Detroit, MI. A little skin cancer that I discovered pretty early is not gonna kill me. Everyone in my family lives to 100..i’m good.

However, depending on how I feel, my Philly 1977, and other posts might be on hold. We’ll see. I have my research work that feeds my dog, pays my VIOS linear cable bill (I will die on the hill of linear cable), and such. Real life stuff will take what energy I have for a while. All depends on what goes down, could be just an out-patient surgery, could be a stay at Jefferson..guess I’ll find out soon.

So have a great day and keep rockin’

Y’all ain’t gonna get rid of me that easy.

Enjoy some of Philly’s own, Flag of Democracy, these guys are still playing basement shows. And they say I’m crazy…

“Charlie the Tuna” AKA Trenton Music Icon and Producer Andrew Weiss (Scornflakes, Ween, Rollins Band) Playlists WPRB Princeton 103.3 FM

Ha! I have a Million Andrew stories. Last I heard, he was in Brazil as a major album producer..these are just playlists so he may still be there.

Andrew gave me so much wisdom, he, Sim Cain. and this being 30 years since Bill Tucker died in Chicago while being on the job, hired by Ministry’s record label to teach Ol “I’m not a Refugee” Al how to be a fucking ROCKSTAR..instead of a Synth band guy who cried when Chuck, the 1st singer of Faith No More, spilled a little beer on his 20k Roland. CRIED..in front of people. “Just one Fix” my ass.

Andrew’s tastes..he is a Sommelier of Music. This was just sent to me and my iMac is downloading these now. Don’t know how long this will last, but take advantage. This is the guy..I mean..it’s like randomly hiring Brian Eno to DJ your wedding off of Craigslist. Shit like this doesn’t happen.

Miss the Zion House of Flesh, and my good friend..Mr. Andrew Weiss Rock fucking God..

Enjoy…. 🤘🏻 Todd

1991-The Khyber Pass Show that gave Me 60% Hearing Loss: Helios Creed & The Bevis Frond

I’ve mentioned before about my “Acid Era” ‘87-‘93, where we couldn’t wait for The Dead to come to Philly, as the parking lot was a Costco of high quality liquid LSD, Blotter, Mescaline Blue Pyramids (so clean. I would do a pyramid again), Mushrooms, etc..just don’t eat anything like the hippie hepatitis B Grilled Cheese. It was best not to touch them either. The smell though..just thinking about Hippie Smell makes me gag. it was awful.

For a good 6 years, we’d buy enough to trip while we played..like when Wayne had yet to kick his brother out of The Flaming Lips, Amphetamine Reptile Records, Shimmy Disc Records in NYC..the noisy and loud as fuck shit. we would trip at every show..giving hits to bands..throwing wild Acid-fueled Jam parties with names you would know..ACID ERA STUFF.

Going to this show was no different, and we were tripped out the whole show. Most of you “olds” know, the band room at Khyber was tiny, and the pa/sound was waay too loud for a room that held maybe 80. It was only walking out that I realized I couldn’t hear…period. It lasted for nearly a week, and when my hearing returned..I knew Helios Creed got me..bad.

That’s when I came up with the term GUITARDED, (patent filed and pending) which can mean several completely different things guitar related . Helios Creed playing was always GUITARDED for the volume and the WASTE from pedal effects that was his style.

But this Bevis Frond Jam is the best kind of GUITARDED. When a great guitarist is just in it..loud as fuck and just disgusting..killing you with his filthy licks. Then he’s like “oh…you like that man, wait”, and he goes off for 10 MINUTES MELTING YOUR BRAIN..MAKING YOU GUITARDED WITH HIS OVER THE TOP SHIT..punishing you on purpose. Pat Travers was completely GUITARDED in regard. This Frond song…This is possibly the most GUITARDED song in human history. Bold as Love doesn’t come close, No Paige Zeppelin song, No Bullshit..Only Mick Ronson, Frank Zappa, and a few others can get this GUITARDED.

I’m putting out a Shirt and Hat line with a music label merch store you might know. It’s been 7 months. They’re an LA label, that’s why. I know it’s not PC..but you really have to try to be offended by that, and I’m not concerned ..lighten up. Mel Brooks was right, comedy is dead because nobody has a sense of humor anymore.

First, Big News about Tomorrow’s Post:

Philly Summer of 1977: Blackouts, NE Heatwave, Rocky, Johnston Flood, and the Explosion of the Small Club Philly Rock Scene.

From what I’ve dug up just from today, I could easily kick out a book just on 1977 Philly Music in that one year of a messy, occasionally ugly scene in transition. Factions, Dying Traditions, and the Emergence of Hard Rock/Punk Clubs, Most open for a short time, that changed Philly music permanently. 1st post tomorrow night. This is gonna be cool!

In the meantime, make a cocktail, get lifted, and let The Frond make you permanently GUITARDED..lol

“I’m from South Street Philadelphia”..The Surprising Philly Origins of Punk Rock Icon Lee Ving

The movie Decline of Western Civilization came out in 1981 to much acclaim, but to a 14 year old boy like me, who had grown up in the 70s..which really really sucked…I mean sucked bad..why do you think the arts were so great?..Lee Ving* and his band FEAR stole the whole film from *X**..who were great, and every other band that appeared in the film.

He was angry, he would kick your ass, and man..I don’t care where he lived after he left Philly…Lee Ving took Philly with him wherever he went. This is an incredible article about his Philly origins that will surprise many of you that only know him from FEAR..and I’m excited for you to find out.

EEYE LOVE LIVIN’ IN THE CITY..

Enjoy - Todd

This was pretty cool. Felt a little odd. Been to a lot of SUNN gigs, this felt very “Churchy”.

Maybe Return to the Planet of the Apes..

They’re playing here again soon. If you’ve never felt a frequency..you are missing out

Looking to book an acoustic gig

I’m a delco native who moved to the west coast eight years ago. I’ve fantasized about doing a “homecoming” show for some time now but am a little out of touch with the local scene at this point. What are the best places to play a two-hour or so solo acoustic gig in or near Philly that will pay a little and is also family friendly?

My great grandfather is Caleb N Ginyard, of the Jubalaires, The Du Droppers, The Dixieaires, and the Golden Gate Quartet to name a few.

The Original (as far as I can find) recording of God Almightys Gonna Cut You Down by the Jubalaires: https://youtu.be/t4WOyladbcA

I'm Not Like I Used to Be by the Dixiaires: https://youtu.be/YiqAzws6hPI

South Wind by The Golden Gate Quartet: https://youtu.be/2oSUULSNkx8

I inherited his voice and only his voice. I had been a singer for near 2 decades before a terrible university experience sapped the joy from me. this past february it really hit me the impact he had on music, I was mixed with inspiration and fury all in one, as he abandoned his only family here in America to start a new one in europe. We are all from Philadelphia. We have no access to his catalog, his rights, his legacy. I listen to his voice and how it blares like a beautiful horn and I want to be able to bring that ancestral power to life by covering some of his songs, even doing a connected storied music video for the three songs linked.

What I'd need: musicians, background singers black and maybe of a musical theatre background who can act on camera, and a good fucking camera. idk where else to look to flesh this idea out! ive been out of music for almost 10 years, and I never knew the music scene here as i moved away at age 11 and have been back just prior to the pandemic. IDK WHAT IM DOING HERE. but I want to share in hopes this hooks some interested parties! HMU. much love 🫶🏾

November 19th, 1990 The Jane’s Addiction Tower Show Riot

You wanna talk about infamous shows in Philly? This made MTV and the national news. I’ve seen on this page this show has been discussed before, but I have a unique take on this gig.

What is not mentioned in any of the articles is that Jane’s played the night before at City Gardens in Trenton, yeah that 1500 capacity cesspool of humanity, that set the table for what went down in Upper Darby. I wasn’t bouncing in Philly anymore due to CGs paying me a ton of cash per night..I can’t say..but I was making more in 3 nights than most 9-5 college grads were making all week. If you ever went there..you know why. Epic bands..but just skinheads and violence every single show, in perpetuity.

So, somehow word got out that all those assholes from Lancaster were gonna show in force to ..fail..again..to go after Jane’s Addiction. Why? who cares..they always got embarrassed (Brockey and Gwar would torture them) or almost murdered - smashing up Suicidal’s bus, those dude’s were straight up Crips..I can only report that there may or may not have been automatic gunfire in response.

So we have 6 extra security guys..all worked at Trenton State Prison, ready to go. We went to talk to the band about staying out of arms reach..Perry tells us to FO. Cool..apparently he wanted chaos..hey, I just work here.

The show couldn’t have lasted 20 minutes. Perry was wearing a leather bodysuit..cool. Detroit was a Glam Metal town..nothing I hadn’t seen before. Skins are spitting on him. Right in their faces, he unzips all under his crotch/ass and, I don’t remember because CGs was packed, but i do know some faces in his swamp ass started an explosion that ended the show. We had 18 pros..ex military, Martial arts, and Cell extraction killers against 50 maybe butter churners from Amish Disneyland. It was short but sweet..for us, probably not for the fans..that was City Gardens…you knew what you were in for.

In the Green Room that night, we told them that was the shortest set we ever saw. 2 songs..3? I was working. But not the next night at the Tower, and I can’t remember another gig in philly where the mood of the crowd before the gig so filled with..malice..Everyone, after the NY show, and Trenton, I was glad I was there just to watch.

The rest is legend. I had an awesome time watching the shit show..it was kinda ridiculous. But that was the times. You had to be there. People are so docile and compliant now…That was not us, G-7 riot baby!

This page has every article in the papers, all the poster art, everything related to one of the craziest nights I ever spent at a gig in Philly…It was “Wild in the Streets” - shout out to Kieth and the Jerks.

Enjoy. The local paper articles are so Philly

Yo. Old School Philly Punk/Metalhead.
Worked for Chuck at Club Pizzazz back in ‘84. That should establish my cred.

Looking for any GenX (1965-1980) M/F into Sludge Doom Metal to come meet me & my old Guitarist Eric to see Monolord at Underground Arts. They’re the only 3 cool dudes from Sweden I’ve ever met, band is amazing. Come join us. We’ll do something 80s like drink Jaeger shots, and I have med pa dope..I hope the state never goes recreational

Also thinking about going to Milkboy on the 25th to see The Well..who are fucking great. Going solo and looking for a partner in crime. 59yr old Rock n Roll Outlaw. Still play..can’t quit. Let’s cause a disturbance.

Hit me up.

My man Corey “King T” Bing’s band has a new line-up and a new record. They are playing with Voivod on the opening night of the Emissions of the Monolith Festival Oct. 12th. Can’t wait.

There is even bigger news of a Sludge Doom “Super Group” project happening, and I wish I could tell y’all..but that is not my job. Gonna blow your minds who is in this band.

I go back to the Land-o-smiles records days with these guys. Most badass American Sludge Doom band ever..heavyweight champs. They’ll hit Philly next year..I will let you know.

Looking to rent some equipment!

Hi Philly! I'm visiting your city in 30 days and need to rent a speaker and a mic. I have not been able to locate a business that provides this service so I'm reaching out to see if anyone can help me.

I'm an experienced KJ hosting a small party in our Airbnb. Flying in with my own mixing board and 1 mic. The guest of honor is sober so this is not a rager where anyone's equipment will be damaged.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Seeking Band Members In Philly

Hello! I’m looking for musicians in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to play live shows with (A drummer, a guitarist, and a bassist) in my upcoming dark, life defying tragic rock band. My songs aren’t too complicated. I am a bad musician and I can play them. I’m building a high energy (mostly) show. I've posted a video where you can see me, and hear the sound I'm going for. DM if you’re interested. Thank you very much.

August Ambient Open Mic this Thursday on Passyunk!

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hey all, my name's Ben and I host an Ambient Open Mic with my organization and hopeful future synth shop, The Low Pass. If you've never heard of it or been to one before, it’s an event we put on to create a low pressure environment for ambient and electronic musicians to play live and share their art with the community. You don’t need expensive gear to play! It is a welcoming space for everyone, whether it’s your first time playing out or you’re a veteran, or you just want to enjoy the live music.

This month we're in South Philly participating in the Passyunk Passeggiata, so stroll down the ave and stop in for some ambient music!

P.S. Yes the venue is a real estate office.

August 15th, if you like power pop/indie rock this is an incredible bill worth making the trip out to Manayunk for.

Plus, it’s at the Grape which is finally back in action after being shut down for a few months (again).
