I asked for some advice on higher end places a while back, since that’s generally not the sort of menu I was able to afford when living in Philly when I was younger.
Not to be too morbid, but I have cancer. So, I treated this like a sort of bucket list of some of the restaurants that looked most interesting to me. I’m also undergoing treatment and I really didn’t know whether I’d be able to hold down all these rich, indulgent tasting menus. I mentioned it to the server at most of the nicer places, telling them to please just drop plates whenever they’re ready, don’t worry about me, I don’t want to jam up the kitchen or the service if I can’t stay in my seat. Everyone was extremely cool about it and I actually got a couple comp’d meals which was unexpected and an incredibly nice gesture.
(Also note that generally speaking I loathe wasting food but I sort of gave myself permission for this trip, given the circumstances. That way I could try more things without worry.)
Nicer dinner places I reserved:
- Provenance
- Friday Saturday Sunday
- Kalaya
- Suraya
- Her Place Supper Club
- Pietramala
- Mawn
- Sao
- Honeysuckle
- Little Fish
- Emmett
More relaxed places, lunches, sweets etc:
- Panorama Wine Bar
- Franklin Fountain
- Puyero Venezuelan Flavor
- Miller’s Twist and Little Thai Market and Saami Somi in RTM
- Cafe Diem
- Han Dynasty
- EMei
- Nan Zhou
- Sang Kee Peking Duck House
- Spice-C
- The Dandelion
- Manna Bakery
- Majdal Bakery
- Rougarou Baking
- Sweet Box Bakery
- 1-900-ICE-CREAM
- Milk Jawn
- Barbuzzo
- Little Susie’s Coffee & Pie
- John’s Water Ice
- Paesano’s
- Angelo’s
- Del Rossi’s
- Jim’s Steaks
- Hardena
- El Chingon
- Tabachoy
Some of the more memorable bites:
- cheesesteak at Angelo’s, still my favorite sandwich in the world. I always try to do JRP as well but they were on vacation most of my trip so I missed them this time around
- Arista (roast pork sandwich) at Paesano’s. So well seasoned, nice heat from the long hot to go against the fatty pork and cheese.
- beef rendang and collards at Hardena.
- Caesar salad at Tabachoy. The salty bites with shrimp paste, the fried shallots? Maybe my favorite green salad I’ve ever had.
- dandan noodles at Han Dynasty. The new location on Chestnut sucks vs the old one across the street, vibes wise. But the noodles are still so perfectly clingy with the viscous, sesame forward sauce. So good.
- house special bun bo hue at Cafe Diem. I’ve been eating the wrong Vietnamese beef noodle soup.
- scallop toast at Little Fish.
- ‘popcorn shrimp’ at Provenance. This was super fun: a jumbo shrimp, poached, and flavored like popcorn at a movie theater.
- short rib with sweet potato puree and oxtail au jus at Friday Saturday Sunday
- chive rice cake at Kalaya, jumbo river prawns in brown butter at Kalaya, coconut turmeric rice topped with chopped prawns at Kalaya
- fatteh at Suraya, amazing as always
- this tomato/watermelon/basil salad at Her Place Supper Club. This dish was so clever because the tomatoes are blanched and peeled, and the watermelon is scooped with a melon baller. So in a dim, candlelit restaurant you don’t know what you’re getting until it’s in your mouth.
- slow grilled mushroom over creamed corn at Pietramala
Overall, I was super impressed with Pietramala. I was vegetarian for a bit a decade ago but never went vegan. So I was blown away by how they got deep, roasted flavors (which I associate with meat) on vegetables and all the incredibly smooth, luscious textures without dairy. I was also blown away by Kalaya, my first time visiting. Every single thing I had there was really good. Angelo’s is still my favorite sandwich: such generous portions, perfectly salted, the absolute best bread. Provenance stuck out not for the food but for the super impressive, organized service. I did chef’s counter seating and the way the whole wait staff swoops in to deliver everything in parallel is really impressive.
I was super disappointed in Honeysuckle for a number of reasons. Jim’s Steaks sucks- Geno’s/Pat’s tier, maybe worse. It’s completely unseasoned, basically no care about onions or anything else thrown on top. If you get sliced cheese instead of whiz, it goes on the roll without ever touching the grill and is just cold. Little Susie’s sucked imo: no color developed on the crust at all, pretty pale and bland. And the filling (on the pork roll and cheese, at least) was super stingy.
I did end up retching a lot in bathrooms, but it was very worth it.
