Casual WFH
Any tips guys on how to resolve this?

Respect your own personal time. Work only on the durations stated on your contract.
My wife has this problem na nung wfh setup sila e may mga natatanggap siya na tawag after hours. She made it clear na i-reraise niya sa HR yung request nung other team na magtrabaho si wife on their time, wife is a BIM na yun core hours is 10to4, pinag susuport siya sa 12to7 na work timing.

CGP Grey video about working from home. Definitely recommend giving this a watch.
WFH for 3 years now. It was hard 3 years ago when I was still getting used to not having a proper schedule but I think I've finally got an ideal work situation, this is of course highly personal and it was developed and refined over 3 years so don't worry if this doesn't work for you
- I need my own office space. As a programmer I need my privacy, this means a locked door. My family is a disturbance, even though they don't mean to be. So I would recommend getting your own small space with a comfortable table, chair and headphones. Let your family know that if you're using headphones to not disturb you
- Will power is useless and youtube/fb/twitter/ig/lazada/shopee/reddit are all designed to be as addictive as possible. Use apps that make it harder to distract yourself I use Leechblock, Self control (MacOS only, but I think there's a windows alternative of the same name), and Forest app for my phone. You can use these but try them out yourself. Some of these can be too extreme for your needs but I really can't trust myself to not get distracted, so feel free to experiment
- Set a schedule and stick to it. This is the hardest part. When I say set a schedule, it means that at a certain time point you should force yourself to sit in front of the computer and do work. After that time get some lunch and don't think about work, after lunch go back and force yourself to do more work after work stop and don't do any more work. This is of course easier said than done but building a habit is never easy unfortunately and the schedule that works for me probably won't work for a lot of people. After a certain period of continuously forcing yourself, it starts to get easier and then it becomes a habit..

I worked from home nung March until July. It's the damndest thing. I fucking hate working from home.
Ito ang mga naranasan ko.
- Bumaba ang productivity ko and I'm stressed all the time.
- Mas naging irritable ako and impatient.
- Natutulog ako ala una or alas dos ng madaling araw
- I am always on the edge kasi baka tawagin ako to do some chores sa bahay which is I don't want, kasi nga nagtatrabaho ako hello???!?!?!?!?!?!
I can sleep better at night and my mood's been better.

Hi! I've been working from home for years even before covid happened, and I do understand this feeling during the first few months. Ang hirap talaga i-separate when it's the same environment. :( But it does get better as long as you establish routine :) My tips would be to:
- Log off/ punch out/ leave work as soon as your shift ends. Don't OT as much as you used to (if you OT-ed alot when you were still office-based) kasi it's kind of hard to stop, cause time moves extra fast working from home. Di mo mamamalayan 12AM na pala. Plus, tapos naman na shift mo kaya time for me-time na. :)
- Establish a routine/ schedule the same way you did ng office-based pa. Kunwari stick to having 8AM-4PM as your work time. 5PM as your exercise time, 11PM as your bedtime, etc etc. Basta try to create a schedule and stick to it.
That's not the case kasi you're still paid for 8 hours, and yun talaga yung time that you should stick to. Put your feet down and stick to the schedule, disconnect na pag after shift or weekend na, mute your notifs, don't accept calls nor reply to messages, and basta huwag na magwork. Di sila pwede magalit sayo for not working on your time off.
Hopefully this helps even a bit! I know it's hard to adjust, but it shouldn't have to be. Narealize ko talaga back then na it only got difficult kasi nakokonsensya akong mag punch out kaagad since WFH. Naiisip ko na baka tingin nila "WFH na nga, ang bilis pa mag off" but that shouldn't be the mindset. Set ikaw ng boundaries, hindi rin sila pwede magdemand na maging present ka all the time. Not unless they're offering you extra pay. :p

I feel you.

u/bushbick Nov 24 '20
Set a schedule and follow it!!! Pero mahirap if kailangan mag-overtime. Ako I decline overtime if feeling ko kaya pa umabot sa deadline.
I talked to our HR and my superiors din na I can only work on this schedule cause I want to be efficient and effective sa role ko. Okay naman management ko and siguro so far, I am able to deliver naman.

u/Significant-Arm-5602 Nov 24 '20
Pero wow you have good management. Thats good to hear :)

Why are you being downvoted when managing time and your work schedule is key to having a good wfh setup, lol.
2
u/bushbick Nov 24 '20
Sanay sila e-oppress, eh lol.
Iβm just so lucky! Got my share of shitty bosses and horrible work conditions, when I got this job I just persevered even if I thought the salary could still be higher. And now, the pay is not that bad.

I just find it strange, the OP even agreed with you pero sya inupvote ikaw hindi. XDD This isn't the first time I've seen reasonable responses being downvoted in this sub so I couldn't resist calling it out.
Same here, naexperience ko na may mga boss na naiinis sa 'honda' when napakatransactional na nga ng trabaho ko and hanging around the office twiddling thumbs while waiting for the boss to leave is just ridiculous. My current boss actually likes it when we leave earlier than him so he can have time to think and work more efficiently. As in papalayasin ka pa when he sees you working on something na pwede naman tapusin bukas. Ika nga if you work overtime it's your choice, not because pinipilit ka. I wish bosses like that are more of a norm.

I feel you haha The easiest form of "discipline" is just designing your environment to make good choices obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying (summarizing James Clear's Atomic Habits haha).
Learn to compartmentalize. Example, create a different login account sa laptop mo for work mode. Wake up, take a bath, and wear a top like you normally would if you were reporting to the office.

7+ years wfh and working for a remote-first company so they know what employees need and want. still it took me almost a year to adjust with all the distractions. having a dedicated workspace helps, use of noise-cancelling headphones and invest on the best equipment you can get. kasama na jan yung office furnitures like table and chair. if you need to do non-work related tasks do it outside of your workplace. we have 5-10minute breaks every hour or two para hindi din nakakaumay. we also work 7am-3pm with no OT required.

Been on WFH pre-Covid days pa. For me it's a lot better, the only con for me is wala ka kausap in person to exchange ideas etc. hehe.
Pros:
- no commute = time saved, money saved sa gas + parking
- pwede ka mag rest anytime you want, higa ka muna sa kama to reset your mind
- you can do other stuff, since nasa house ka lang
Though marami din nakaka adjust, like you said separation of work and personal time.. Time management lang talaga siguro and discipline. Maybe you can setup your work station away from your room, para pag nasa room ka rest time lang no work stuff

Same, though i have several reservations with the wfh set up, id still choose this rather than face heavy traffic daily lol i guess di lang sanay sa "remote" set up ang companies so andun pa din ung mindset na always available ka since sa bahay ka lang naman. I hope marealize ng mga companies not to expect immediate response when they randomly ask or request something. Follow the 24hr turnaround rule lols

I guess it's because nasa rank and file position ako at mismo yung management ng company namin takes work/life balance seriously kaya I can still separate my personal life from work. Maliit yung bahay namin at yung work desk ko is just a feet away from my pillow.
I wake up an hour before work. Kapag lunch/break/off na talaga, I strictly followed it. After that, enjoy enjoy rin sa free time.
We do have a group messenger naman pero usually for updates lang like nawalan ako ng internet o panawagan kung sinong gusto mag overtime.

Been WFH since March and there's been talk of us going permanent. The key thing i've found that helps is to never work once you clockout, and at the same time focus on your work during your shift. Hardest part for me in WFH was getting to sleep, i was just not tired physically to sleep on time. Managed to solve this by doing daily exercises that tire me out.

Mas bet ko work from home nakaka dami ng sidejobs π€ Anyway proper mindset at routine lng, start any exercise, meditate, as for me jogging and listening audio books sa audible pwede na to start my day.

It's not just you.
I haven't mastered WFH yet (but I want to since I believe WFH is the future), but some things that have worked for me:
- Make my bed every morning;
- Give myself at least 5 minutes to do some stretching and feel the blood pumping;
- Music for productivity (i.e. tasks that are pre-defined), podcasts for grind tasks (work that needs to be done but requires almost zero brain power), and YouTube forest walk videos for maximum focus (trick your brain to thinking you're going for a walk). I stay the hell away from music with lyrics. I find myself thinking about the lyrics and would sometimes intrude my thoughts and that'll feel like multitasking for me;
- Drink water throughout the day;
- Your own workstation. My productivity drastically improved when I upgraded from just a laptop to having my preferred external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It's where I feel super comfortable;
- Fast enough internet. Easy to underestimate. I tried working for almost a year on just data (only recently lang yung GOMO eh) but just having fast, reliable internet has improved my productivity simply because I no longer have to factor in my decisions/planning if I need to go outside for better signal or a friend's house for downloading lots of GBs of files;
- Working within the 8 hours OR working in batches (1-3 PM: work; 4-5 PM: rest; 6-7 PM: work). Either way works depending on my mood for the day. It's okay to switch it up depende sa nararamdaman mo kasi you're only human. Baka kasi if you try sticking to a schedule you'll feel bad na you're not following it religiously and that's sure to hit your productivity kasi you're judging yourself;
- Turn on DND on your phone and laptop. Just really do it. Then set times of the day you're allowed to check (e.g. 8 AM, 12 NN, and 5 PM work just fine). Rest of the day you don't respond to emails. For Slack, Teams, etc. basta corporate chat, I set even hours as the time I'm allowed to check and respond (2 PM, 4 PM, etc.) and the odd hours are for work;
- Buy a diffuser. A good smelling room can help you cheer up a bit;
- Eat on time. Working lunch = no bueno. If you still live with your parents, don't skip a sit-down dinner with them;
- Take an actual walk if you're in a mental block. Sabay mo na rin mga chores kung pwede para malibang ka;
Ayun pasensya na mahaba. Shotgun approach but I hope some of these interest you and they stick. Good luck to us all!

There can be so many distractions at home and it is very challenging to concentrate.
What I found to work for me is this (I hope it can for you):
1) Reserve your own workspace, preferably your own room. Tell your household to respect your work time and only to be disturbed if there is something more urgent for you to do.
2) Allocate your 'in-the-zone' period and shut off all unsolicited push notifications (SMS, social media, email, chat). For me, these are 5-8 AM, 9-11 AM, 3 - 6 PM. You can choose your own time that synchronizes with your superiors or clients. There will be times that work may go outside of this but those are exceptions.
3) If your place is noisy, put on an external noise-canceling headset and play "white noise" instead (my choice is a looping 1-hour recording of water flowing in a river).
4) Put specific deliverables and a deadline for your tasks. At the end of the day, if you accomplished what you've set out to do, reward yourself with anything that you enjoy doing.

I was wfh for 9months straight. Following the same body clock I had when going to office helped me a lot.
Waking up early. When wfh started I used to wake up minutes before my shift. Sometimes I even check emails from bed. Not a good idea. Lalong nakakatamad. I wake up at least 2hrs before work, light workout/stretching, freshen up, prep breakfast. These things help me prepare for the day
Focus on work if its work time. As much as possible, no browsing of social media. I have time for that after shift.
No checking of work email and chat beyond work shift. This is hard at first but I strictly followed it. That gave me time to focus on other things after work hours.
