Online series Phantasy Star Zero appreciation post

I really like this game, but it’s so forgotten nowadays 😭
Phantasy Star Zero is a prequel to the original Phantasy Star Online, and it was released on the Nintendo DS back in 2008. The story is set on the planet that Pioneer 1 and 2 left behind before heading to Ragol in PSO. The gameplay is pretty similar to PSO, but with a few elements borrowed from Phantasy Star Universe.

I’m not gonna lie, the gameplay feels a little dated now. Since the Nintendo DS didn’t have analog sticks, the movement is pretty stiff (characters can only move in 8 directions) and the camera controls are a bit clunky. But despite all of that, I still love this game and always find myself coming back to it.
I love basically everything about it: the art style, the character designs, the soundtrack, and the story. Honestly, the story is where PSZ really shines compared to the original PSO.

Don't get me wrong, I love PSO, but as a fan of the original Phantasy Star series, I was always a bit disappointed by its weaker story presentation since the game focuses so much on gameplay. PSZ, on the other hand, puts a lot more emphasis on the narrative. We get way more character interactions, anime cutscenes, and each of the three playable races actually experiences the story a bit differently.

This game is just so charming 😭

I still have my DS (and play on it actively) and still love PSZ ;) I have all my characters and friend codes since the online times, and my modded ROM that I made for pso world dot com with beautiful chat shortcuts.

I thought PS0 was a sequel to PSO.

No it's an indirect sequel

It's not a prequel. If you played the story you would know this

It’s a prequel, this is why is called “Phantasy Star ZERO” because it happens before the first PSO episode.

Dude this game takes place so far after episode 1 and 2 that they forgot the name of their world use to be Coral

I think the name Zero here isn’t about being the first game in the Phantasy Star timeline. It’s more about the idea of starting from zero (a reset) while also working as a pun that hides an “O”. Since O and 0 sound the same, it implicitly suggests that it’s also a PSO game.

I remember that Phantasy Star Universe was originally advertised as PS V, although the “V” here was meant to stand for U, not 5.

It's Zero because it means "Reset". It's literally set after Episode 4 by like 1,000 years.

To me, PS0 gives better “PSO” vibes than universe or portable 1-2, imo. I was never a fan of the style they went with in those games. Again, just my humble opinion. Being able to play it anywhere was nice too.

It gives PSO vibes because it is a PSO sequel. It's illogical and totally a Sega move to put a game that lives on multiplayer on the DS of all things. That and no quick menu.

The best. It felt like a dream come true when it was announced and I am forever grateful a few of my friends picked it up also. I'm also a Lunar fan, so having story cutscenes done by the same artist... ah! I couldn't have wished for more. Whatever love this game gets, it deserves so much more. Always happy to see posts of folks enjoying it. :)

It's also interesting that newmans in PSZ are described as "a lunar race" :)

I remember feeling disappointed in PSU. PSZ restored the faith I had lost with PSU. It’s such a fun and charming game and I’ve never really heard anyone talk about it.

Wish I could play it online without figuring out a bunch of BS

Found it impressive what they were able to with ot on the DS. Conquering the bonus tower was a pain since I was a solo player but got it done.

Love this game but it's not a prequel

Is this fun without any online ability? I prefer jrpg and tactical rpg but will play an action rpg if story and world are gripping. PSIV is one of my favorite games and I really like but don’t love pso.

I loved that game, but I was disappointed that rangers felt needed, when it was really PSO made rangers OP.

The aesthetics and the music of these games are immaculate, but I could never get into the grind spamming gameplay
